It's a pretty straightforward question (I'm not saying the answer is: just the question), I think, and I won't add too much to the background, in order to keep the table clear of any biases, so to speak. The only thing I will add is that there's also the issue of Dennard getting some type of suspension which you may/may not feel adds to the equation. Having said that.....

Have at it.

I would hope not, of course.

I would guess that Belichick would treat him the same as most other players in this situation, whereas if they cannot seem to get on the field and contribute they're usually gone.

Every situation is probably evaluated a bit differently though, so it's hard to specualte as to how much they know about this injury being different and/or feel that he actually has a chance of contributing.

If he's able to play I'd probably lean towards keeping him for one last honest attempt, but he'd be on a damn short leash--that's for sure.

Speaking of the possibility of Dennard's suspension, what is the NFL waiting for??

Are they waiting for the outcome of his court case?? If so that may take a while, was under the impression that this stuff happened in the early part of the season if it happened off-season...

Of course they are waiting on the outcome of his court case. My understanding is that he passed a field sobriety test and did not flunk the breathalyser, but the police said he did not make a good effort on it. The combination of the two is reasonable doubt on whether he will win his case. Goddell does not go off willy nilly inn suspending players before thier court date, if the nfl investigators believe there is doubt he won't suspend.

I think I know what you're asking, but I'll try to clarify in case I'm wrong. What you're suggesting is that by keeping Ras-I on the roster, the Patriots will be forced to keep an extra CB in case he gets hurt. In that scenario, the depth at another position may suffer, yes.

I think in this case though, the extra CB that will be kept is Marquis Cole who A) you don't really want playing regular defense except in emergencies anyway and B) is a strong ST player. I think they were going to keep him around whether they had Ras-I or not, which leads to the real question: Is it worth keeping Dowling around as a potential upgrade at CB 4 or 5?

The Pats have been relatively thin a CB for the past few years so RAS is simply a necessary risk.

If the choice is between Tebow and Dowling, I choose Dowling every time.

I think corners in general have traditionally been fragile on this team so I think they will carry a good supply of cornerbacks in case of injury. I don't think Ras I alone is the reason for this. I'm still not even convinced that he will make the team although those behind him aren't exactly quality.

if i am not mistaken, his cap hit is 600k+ more to cut him than to keep him.....he is a high 2nd round pick at a position we are thin at

he sticks around one way or another, whether it is a PUP situation or a straight roster spot

also going to say dennard gets off on his court case, and may escape suspension if there's any doubt that lincoln police targeted him, which i believe they did

given that driving is a privilege and not a right, driving offenses are not bound by the notion of 'reasonable doubt' .... take a look at your license, the state can take it away for no reason at all

The answer should be a strong function of just how good a CB that Glass IR is assessed to be by the coaching staff. If they feel he's a legit 3rd or even 4th choice at corner then especially given Dennard's suspension risk, they should keep him despite "history". Tall CBs who can play at a journeyman level in the NFL are not common. To put it in perspective, he's knocking off the 53rd least capable player on the team so there should not be massive downside pissed away given again an accurate assessment of Mr 53's potential which always applies in any case. And Mr 53 should have a shot of making it to the PS unclaimed.

Dowling will not cost anyone a roster spot......if he's healthy enough to play, then he will.....if not, it's back to IR for him unless he is cut, but I believe there are some negative cap ramifications of cutting him

This isn't a Tebow thread, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Dowling has been a binky and real disappointment. His position is so important and difficult to get high quality players at that in season PUP is a possibility particularly given the Denard mess in Nebraska. Given the cap hit issue it may be better to simply stick him on permanent IR again.

All that said, patience has to be wearing out on the team and if he is cut, I understand the need to move on.

is this a wafflly enough responce?

Another variation on this is...is Glass IR worth keeping over some team's cut of an established CB with enough left in the tank to play backup for one last season? Obviously a hypothetical since we do not know the candidate(s) which could likely be a null set.

The $600K hit for cutting the guy should not and I'm sure is not a factor in BB's call. We have the cap space to achieve the oft stated goal of fielding the best team.

BTW in case it's unclear, this Pats homer is for keeping him...subject to his play tomorrow night and against the Giants. Then again Glass IR may miss the Giants game, making this an easy decision.

I still think Dennard may get the suspension next year rather than this year. I am guessing that Dennard's lawyers will successfully get his parole violation hearing pushed back to after the outcome of the DUI case which will likely push it into 2014. Goodell won't rule on Dennard until the outcome of both of those.

Lets just hope the year we are not expecting anything from Glass-IR Dowling is the year he actually stays healthy. Good thing we ain't depending on him.

If the choice is between Tebow and Dowling, I choose Dowling every time.

That's like being forced to choose whether to get rid of your testicular cancer or your prostate cancer. Cruel, just cruel.
