Re: Welker mild disdain for Pats right now

Oh, so Welker breaks one of Jerry Rice's records, now you think Wes can hold Rice's jock? Are you frigign kidding me?

Welker's production is rare, and you are calling him a jag and blame the SB losses on him, you tell me who is being the idiot. He's on a HOF track and they have never had a HOF WR, anyone who can't see that he's a great player is a moron. Your comments are no different than those from the fools who called Brady "just a system Quarterback who would never have been anything without Belichick." It's bullsh.t.

As it stands the have the best QB in history and the worst WR corps in football, and that's idiotic.

A bit premature. Let's wait to see what unfolds in FA. I have less faith in the draft b/c of the complexity of the O. If we can get Amendola and perhaps Jennings or Wallace - this will work out fine. We still have plenty of weapons on the O, but I hope Brady restructured with the "assurance" that they will get him a nice WR.

There is no way they are signing any of the big money WR's, it won't happen. Belichick is going to go cheap at the position.

Strange ... I suddenly have developed a "mild disdain" for Wes Welker.

That's ridiculous. The Patriots are clearly the side that's been the problem. If you must join the "disdain" group, save it for the Patriots.

This, Welker is the most productive receiver in the NFL since joining us and also the most financially disrespected player in the NFL since joining us if you compare his production to his earnings.

While I don't buy into the "New England is cheap" bull****, Welker is one of the most underpaid athletes in the NFL (not counting his franchise tagged season).

For only 18m we received 554 receptions, 6,105 yards, and 31 touchdowns on top of some spot duty as a return man.

Find me another player in recent history who has done as much for so little. (edit: and done so without complaining)

I bet you most players with that kind of production made more money than Welkers 5 year deal in 2 or 3 seasons.

It's crazy how hated Welker is becoming over this by the fan base. I'm just glad that nobody on this forum has any say in our front office.

Welker pulled the perfect move at the perfect time. The Pats are FAR more desperate than he is. We potentially have 0 wideouts (starting caliber) and 2 guys in the slot (neither full-time) who struggle to make it through a season. This move will get WW his final payday - with or without the Pats. I do not blame him and I salute his smarts in calling the bluff. Go Wes - get paid.

We don't know who really has been the problem. It looks on the surface like it is the Patriots are more at fault for not getting a deal done, but it could equally or more be Welker from what we don't see.

And we don't even know if his threat of testing the free agent market is just negotiation ploy or Welker's real intentions.

Where did I blame SB losses on him? I merely stated the truth, he was part of an offense that sputtered and lost 2 superbowls. You need to get over this Welker lovefest.

I am a Patriots fan first

Unless you think every reporter has been getting the Welker situation wrong since about 2009, we know who really has been the problem, and it's been the team.

I don't "disdain" anyone in this drama.

This is a negotiation and both sides are proceeding in what they perceive as their own best interests. I have no problem with either side, based on the information that is publicly available. Welker correctly wants to be paid and the Pats are typically not willing to pay top dollar for a player who is closer to the end of his career than the beginning, no matter how good he is. In fact, they have actually done the honorable thing and not tagged him.

As far as what is or is not "ridiculous," those who point out that Welker had the fourth Brady/Belickick/Kraft Lombardi in his hands and dropped it are not out in left field; in fact, it was you who disagreed and encouraged me to watch the tape of that play again when I had defended Welker and had said it was un-catchable and who got me to change my opinion to "Yeah, it was tough but he should have caught it."

That's fine. I didn't openly call for anyone "disdaining" anyone. I said that if you felt a need to choose, choose "disdain" for the Patriots.

How is not tagging him the second time honorable, when it means that they've already tagged him once? It's less of a slap when you get the second tag, because you at least get a lot more money. If they were going to be "honorable" by not tagging Welker, last year would have been the time for that.

And let's not kid about the "top dollar for a player who is closer..." stuff. It's not just the older players who get leaned on.

This has absolutely nothing to do with what I posted, so I'll just leave it be.

This thread needs a Disdain-o-meter.

I'm having trouble keeping up with Welker's daily disdain. Is it mild? Ramping up? Trending down?

Chris

Unless you think every reporter has been getting the Welker situation wrong since about 2009, we know who really has been the problem, and it's been the team.

You mean the same reporter who most admit that they do not know Welker's position and what he is truly asking for and don't know if his demands are unreasonable? The Patriots are clearly not blameless in this situation, but we don't know if Welker isn't part of the problem too.

Besides, most of the reporters are speculating (by their own admission) about a lot of the stuff. Most of the reporters killed the Pats for mishandling the Brian Waters situation until the facts actually came out and it looks like Waters just didn't want to play for the Pats at any price because he didn't want to leave Texas.

Personally, I don't blame Welker for trying to get every penny that he can get even if it means leaving the Patriots organization, but he might be asking for ridiculous demands. The Pats may be low balling him, but that doesn't mean that Welker is asking for fair market value.

From what little we know, it all looks to me like normal negotiation between two sides defending their interests and determining market value. I cannot place much stock in a reporter's unsupported claim to know how a player feels.

I have a mild disdain for Welker after his two drops against the Giants and the Ravens.

At least after the Caldwell drop in the 2007 AFFCG, Brady rifled one into Gaffney on the next play so it didn't really cost the Pats.

My "mild disdain" is for Belichick, sometimes he is too pennywise pound foolish and too stubborn. He screwed up when he didn't pay Samuel and this is going to end up being s similar mistake. You don't replace great players with 3-4 jags, period. They better hope they can sign Amendola and that he stays healthy, or that Austin is available, they take him, and he figures it out in a hurry because otherwise they have a huge hole to fill. As it stands the have the best QB in history and the worst WR corps in football, and that's idiotic.

But, we don't know how much Wes is demanding contractually. It might not be the Pats' fault here. Samuel was a dink.

Came up with a couple of meters, Chris...

or, for those that are just sick of it all...

Chuckling at Pi in the image. I guess the needle points there when the disdain has come full-circle.

OK. I'll accept your split hair on the disdain point.

It's "honorable" because he's free to make a better deal if he can. Tagging someone two years in a row is consistent with the letter of the CBA, but, personally, I think it's crappy to force a guy off the market twice in a row. While I don't like the whole "tag" thing to begin with, I feel that the Pats were within their rights to use it last year.

Agreed that the Pats are equal opportunity *******s when it comes to contracts, but I was just pointing out the demographic into which a soon to turn 32 WW falls.

You commented that someone who had cited "the drop" as one of his points had taken a "ridiculous" POV, without excluding that point from your response, so I think it was fair to address the point. If you weren't talking about that, OK, but...oh whatever...you know what I'm going to say and it's not worth the bandwidth.

God (not you, Deus), that's one of the most boring posts I've ever written. :bricks: When does FA begin? When's the goddam Draft?
