While Jerod Mayo wouldn’t directly address the rumors that continue to swirl about the Patriots potentially trading for Brandon Aiyuk, the head coach did say he’s addressed one player whose name has come up in those discussions.
Mayo said during his press conference on Tuesday that he had a conversation with Kendrick Bourne about what’s playing out behind the scenes. Bourne’s name has come up among names that could be involved in a possible deal for the 49ers receiver, which would also likely include a draft choice.
Whether or not that’s how things will ultimately play out remains to be seen, but Mayo felt it was important to be transparent, which is why he met with Bourne this morning.
“Honestly, I did talk to him this morning and it was a good conversation,” said Mayo. “And once again, I feel like the story is so much further along than anything else. I just wanted to make sure we cleared the air. And I do believe in being transparent with the players and really just setting those guys at ease.”
While he reiterated multiple times that he wouldn’t speak about the reports, the fact the first-year head coach mentioned the conversation at all was interesting.
According to reports, the Patriots and Browns are the two teams said to be in contention for Aiyuk and that both clubs had agreed on the initial framework with the 49ers to consummate a deal.
From there, it’s apparently up to Aiyuk, which is what everyone, both the team itself and obviously the fans, will now be waiting on.
For now, Bourne was also not spotted on the field stretching with the team prior to Tuesday’s practice session. Bourne had been out there for that portion throughout training camp, and his absence will only further fuel the speculation about his future.
