Unofficial 1st 2019 regular season game thread: Slackers vs. Gummy Bears

Are we going to pretend like Kirk Cousins is going to be any better next week?

At least the Bears' defense stepped up and checked Rodgers at the door.

Yes and no. While it is a strong reaction it is not an over reaction. This game was a reality check after 6 months of talking ourselves into what these teams could be. Trubisky may have a bunch of good and even a few great games this year. But this game gave everyone a big reminder that he just isn't good. That last year was his year 2. The year he was suppose to come in to his own. That year he had more bad than good games.

Clearly this is the player he actually is and we will not see the rare year 3 jump.

This is a fatal flaw people who picked the Bears to win need to face. Mitch has yet to string together 3 good games in his career in the regular season. Why would he be able to do it in the playoffs? No way.

As for GB they showed yet again for us all to see that on offense they are highly limited. Outside of Rodgers and Adams they have little going for them and a decent D can take that away.

How good their D is remains to be seen but it probably needs to be near Bears level to make them a contender and i doubt anyone really believes they are close to that.

You're a fan of the Patriots. You know better than this. You know how deceiving early games can be. ****, weeks 2 and 3 from last year should have made you impervious to this sort of hasty full season thinking for at least half a decade.

Just stop. It's one freakin' game.

Yeah. I think Trubisky is a bad QB, but one game, particularly in the first couple of weeks of the season, is not proof. As you've said, BB has noted that the first 4 games are almost an extended preseason nowadays. Now, I do admit that there is an exception. We know the Jets suck without them ever playing a game.

Just checked the 40min version of the game on international Gamepass and oh boy am I happy I had no motivation or interest at all to watch the live broadcast or the full game VOD.

Trubisky is not progressing at all. He looks as lost as a QB as he did in his first two seasons. Unless there is a magic jump in Mitch's performance Stidham might be ahead of him at the end of this year. It is that bad and Nagy's playcalling really doesnt help.

As his mentor Andy Reid he has some good scripted stuff and some gadget plays but once those things are off the menu the entire thing becomes very stale very fast.

It was also great to see that Patterson continued his pattern of not understanding playbooks lining up wrong a few times only to be corrected by his teammates. But I am sure some Bears fans are still dreaming of his potential the same way some around here did last year, the Raiders before and the Vikings after they drafted him.

Not sure there is much to gather from Rodgers/LaFleur. At least they have the excuse of this being their first year together.

Anyone who complains the Pats have it easy with the AFCE should have to watch this garbage game and then try to make a point how playing the Jets, Bills and Dolphins is such a cakewalk.

With the way hitting has continuously been legislated out of practices, this trend of sloppy, ugly games in the first couple of weeks of the season are going to continue. Anyone that is making a broad judgment of either of these teams is clowning themselves. Trubisky won’t look THAT bad as the season progresses and I’d bet the Packers’ defense won’t look that good on the flip side, either.

Went back to look at the 2017 draft where Trubisky, Mahomes, and Watson were drafted. Mahomes was drafted #10. Of the nine teams who drafted before them, 6 of the teams have subsequently fired a coach and/or GM.

1. CLE – Took Myles Garrett. GM Sashi Brown fired later that year.
2. CHI – Took Mitchell Trubisky. Coach John Fox fired after that season
3. SF – Took Solomon Thomas. BUST. Had committed to Garrapolo. No changes (new regime).
4. JAX – Took Leonard Fournette. BUST. No changes.
5. TEN – Took Corey Davis. BUST. Coach John Fox fired after that season.
6. NYJ – Took Jamal Adams. Coach Todd Bowles and GM Mike MacCagnan fired after 2018 season
7. LAC – Took Mike Williams. BUST. No changes.
8. CAR – Christian McCaffery. GM Dave Gettlemen fired after that season.
9. CIN – John Ross. BUST. Coach Marvin Lewis fired after 2018 season.
10. KC – Patrick Mahomes

I'm a little unsure how Davis and Williams are busts.

100% true. The first 4 weeks are generally poorly played - even by the Pats - and it takes a while for the teams to really play well.

Dear Dude who's writing a lot of stuff as if it has certain, real, and lasting, validity, particularly about teams that haven't even played yet,

It was the first game of the entire season. The only thing to take out of it as certain is that the Packers are 1-0 while the Bears are 0-1. Everything else it just the product of one first week game, and subject to change starting pretty much immediately.

Good 2nd paragraph.

.

Chicago is ignoring our calls to "be patient with the first 4 games of a season". Ya know that's easy for us to say when the Pats have given us the template several times over the past 2 decades. They have no template - - so I can understand. Would be interesting to see how "patient" we all were (hello NEM?......hell, let's be honest, also hello ME?) mid September 2001.

There are Bears fans calling into @670TheScore yelling about Matt Nagy telling them to show up and be loud leading up to last night's game. One guy said "You got a problem with me, look me up on Twitter" and then gave out his Twitter handle. What a world!

He looked as bad as he did through most of last season which is what makes easier for me to assume this is just a continuation of what he has shown for two years by now. Just going with the trend.

Rodgers on the other hand I cut some slack given a new coordinator and the early season sloppyness that you described.

Playing in the preseason or not a QB should never under throw a receiver who is double covered in the corner of the end zone. The NFL got their 1919 score at least 10-3.

Schmucks like you are really what make twitter the worst. I tweet at my boss, and bust balls about a fun convo/fight we’ve had about Trubisky 100 times and you turn that into me somehow bragging about being some sort of sports prophet. You’re the ******* here, not me.

He didn’t look anywhere near that pathetic last season. Maybe some of that was the Packers’ investment in the defensive side of the ball paying off, maybe it’s game plan related (the Packers emphasized contain up front and he had a spy on him almost all night), and maybe some of it is rust because most of the NFL didn’t bother playing their starters for the preseason. The point is, what a team looks like in Week 1 is not indicative of what it will look like later in the year.

People are saying this morning that the Packers did a great job containing all the weapons the Bears have. I’m not sure where they are seeing weapons on offense, aside from Allen Robinson. Now, all that being said, Trubisky was absolutely staring him down all night. On what was the game-sealing INT, all the safety did was read his eyes. He needs to break that habit or it will be a long season.

Collinsworth made the point last night that the Bears offense is not the same without Trey Burton. Odds are Trubisky won't look as bad as he did last night as the season progresses. On the other hand, Matt Nagy is not a good HC. You're down 7-3 and you have the opportunity to kick an easy FG and go for it on 4th and 10 instead? Just dumb.

Getting a little carried with the Bust talk eh?? Leonard Fournette *injured often* and Corey Davis played with ****ty QB's are far from Busts. Also Mike Williams year Two yardage numbers were low but scored 10 TD's he might make that year 3 jump...of-course I'm just saying.

Three consecutive 10-yard penalties put them in a 1st and 40. They were at or nearly in field-goal range before they decided to shoot themselves in both feet and one hand.

Burton will help, but the problem that Trubisky will face this season will be defended that don’t like him run or get outside the pocket. He’ll have to win from the pocket and the jury is still out on whether he can do that or not.
