It's a strange change...and I am not surprised that the media guys are against it. Note that Charean Williams writes for PFT now and then...and also BB being on the committee is surprising to me....but can anyone name a better football historian? Can't be more than a handful better than BB. At the end of the day, the HOF did this...and not sure if it was the right way.

I first saw this just a few hours ago
The more I think about it,
    the more clueless it seems

NFL just introduced drama into something nobody
    ever even thought about
Nobody ever questioned the HoF process.
There are disagreements on this or that man
but the process was never really questioned
It just always was that way. It was accepted.

    They fixed what wasn't broken
*Our process was no good, so... we selected these folks
in secret, behind closed doors. Mkay? Bye*

The entire history of the thing will now end up
questioned by our NFL chattering class
with more time than things to say, trying to avoid
    * Welp, its SF vs NE*
nvm the rest of the season.

Why include writers Gary Myers, Charean Williams and not
the 23 or so who got bounced?
There is No possible good answer to that question

This flaw means there is no possible explanation for the need to change it
    *We dont like them anymore*

    Who is we?

It will be the first time the majority even ever considered the process
In the end, our already cynical public debate will
tear down the HoF status. "Its political"

    Feels like a disaster
    For what?

If this triggers people, I don’t know what to say. I think it’s kinda funny actually. It’s the NFL Hall of Fame, not Heaven on Earth.

Here’s a flashback: Roger Goodell, deflated balls, natural gas laws and so it goes. What else would you expect from the NFL?

This was my reaction too. I read Florio's article and it is clear he is trying to drum up a groundswell of opposition to this, but I just couldn't bring myself to actually care. Quite honestly, I am enjoying seeing the self-important mediots be left out, so that's probably why they are all up in arms. I trust Bill Belichick to make wise decisions a hell of a lot more than Ron Borges.

Hmmmmmm........BB accepting a seat at a table constructed to subvert the influence of media “experts”

Now why would he ever want to diminish the role of “respected” media he holds in such high regard

    it’s a puzzle

While BB thinks you should spend all your energy on winning, getting better, etc. There has always been one thing that will/can get his attention and his time : NFL history. He loves it. He participated in NFL Films and such. To him, the League is bigger than anything.

Heaven forbid anyone should take football seriously on a football forum. :)

Feel free to make the argument the the Hall of Fame itself is unimportant, I think there's a very solid case for that. IMO either the HOF itself is a joke, or this move is dead wrong. It has to be one or the other. (And trying to just dismiss people you disagree with ad hominem as "triggered" or "snowflakes" makes for mighty boring discussion.)

On the bright side, perhaps there's a tiny sliver of hope that a certain player with the following on his resume will be included.

    • AFL all-time leading scorer.
    • Led AFL in scoring five times.
    • 1st and 2nd most points scored in a single AFL season. -> those were in a 14-game season; when adjusting per-game to our current 16-game seasons, they would rank 3rd and 4th most in NFL/AFL history <-
    • Ranks 2nd in AFL history for most points in a single game (28; was a record at that time).
    • Only player in pro football history to run for a two-point conversion, throw for a two-point conversion, catch a pass, intercept a pass, return a punt and return a kickoff in the same season.
    • Holds pro football record for points over a 6-year period.
    • Holds pro football record for points over an 11-year period.
    • Scored 18 points or more in a game ten times.
    • Scored 20 points or more in a game eight times.

I can't be bothered by this in the least. HOF is a borderline joke anyway.

Also this is such a Bill move. You're telling he's not qualified but biased writers who are awful at their job are?

Again the process & results have been a joke forever now. The idea that some have to wait their turn is the biggest laugher of them all.

On an individual player by playet basis it would be but not by an all or nothing standard. One questionable name in that class tarnishes the rest who may be worthy.

the selection committee is bent out of shape over the blue ribbon panel? for some reason, this doesn't bother me. the guys who get voted in as a senior committee pick are typically guys who were overlooked for some reason or another... maybe overshadowed by a team mate or knocked out by animosity from a journalist, whatever the reason...

There is definitely something to be said for stepping away from the Borges types on occasion.

If you're talking borderline HOFers then the process is a bit frustrating but for the clear cut guys it is something special.

The reason I love sports is that decisions are made on the field. That’s why I’ve never been into award ceremonies, Hall of Fame, whatever. Then it’s just people with their own agendas and biases. Wins and losses, that’s sports. Everything else is just cheerleading.

I'm saying the HOF has become a joke bc of the process. Obviously its an honor to most players.
Guys like Cris Carter, TO, Kramer, Hayes... I could literally name 50-60 guys that were great players. Best of the best. That had to wait made the process a joke.

Again look at the few names I listed off the top of my head. This goes back decades, its nothing new.

I can't imagine looking at this process as it is & thinking it's special. Top 5-10 guys at their respected positions waiting years bc some writer who can't tie his show wout losing his breath thinks he should wait for some asinine reason.

Only having a certain amount of players that can get in & having players get in every year is the dumbest **** ever.

Its the HOF. Some years you might have 10 guys, some years you might have 1-2 or none. This to me is something I cant get over. HOF is supposed to for the best of best. Dominant players that are just different from the rest. You're not getting a select # of those guys every year. Its just absurd imo.

Again look at some of the people who vote. They couldn't explain some of the smallest intricaties of the sport but decide who gets in Canton?
Anyone who knows me or reads my post understands I dont have blind loyalty to some of the "professional's" in the sport. I absolutely think some guys outside the sport can excel in it. That said some of these writers are gods awful & should be criticized when it's deserved.

The whole process has been a joke for a long time. Just to be clear I'm not saying this idea is right or great. I'm just not bothered bc imo its been a joke & turned into something else all together.

FWIW, a "blue ribbon panel" is fine by me. I just think that IF they want us to take the Hall of Fame seriously, they can't have some PR flack decide that this year, for photo op purposes, we're abandoning all criteria and enshrining a large, arbitrary number of people regardless of merit. And it sounds like they eliminated the voters specifically to protect this terrible idea.

If, on the other hand, the Hall of Fame is already just an empty PR stunt, they might as well just have a fan vote and enshrine Boaty McBoatface.

wait and see how it plays out? there are many deserving players, coaches and contributors who haven't made the hall of fame for some reason or another... there are a few in Patriots history that are worthy of consideration who haven't made the cut for one reason or another

So the size of this years seniors class will be big ... so what? a dozen or so players get an ugly yellow jacket and will be happy that their contributions to the sport have been recognized... people will talk about it for a bit... will forget about it after a while... and in a year or two, it won't even register for most ...

edit: boaty mcboatface ... lmao ... that never gets old
