Players who have 10 or more accrued seasons may yield only a max of a 5th rd pick.BB's gonna do whatever nets him that 3rd round comp. I'm guessing rework 2021 and let him walk after this season. Better too early than too late.
1 year extention (rework 2021, plus 2022) would be best case for the pats IMO.
I see Gilmore shooting for a deal through 2024.
this is his last year under contract. a 1 to 2 year extension means 1-2 years. He has 2 years left. An 1-2 year extension means 3-4 years.
I believe that the patriots and other teams would be willing to sign a 4 year contract. Obviously, the issue is terms, especially guarantees. Consider a team offering $30M in guarantees (bonus and 2021 and 2022 salary) plus whatever in the 3rd and 4th years.
I think it is bad business or bad GMing I suppose to only entertain the thought of extending a great player on whether the team can win the SB. Part of winning the SB is having great players like Gilmore on the roster. I can tell you without him, we probably have no chance at the playoffs unless Jackson morphs into a #1 during TC. We are playing too many great teams this year with some of the best passing attacks/QBs in the league. This may be the first response you've ever had I agree on in premise - even if said with the usual dismissive tone of all things Patriots.
The premise of measuring his worth across return on the investment of THIS year. Even if he is close to elite this year, those odds of continued high level play plummet every successive year for the CB position at his age. And this team can be a playoff team, maybe even a more than one round if all the variables swing their way, but a Super Bowl contender - probably not. And I doubt Gilmore is agreeing to just pumped up money for one year (I could be wrong, but he likely knows he's not getting another big long term contract as well).
This is his last year on his current deal. If we give him a 2 year extension then we would have him through the 2023 season. I think that is perfect. He has 2 years left. An 1-2 year extension means 3-4 years.

Thank you for the correction. A 1-2 year extension means 1-2 MORE years in addition to 2021.this is his last year under contract. a 1 to 2 year extension means 1-2 years.
I guess I didn't cover that it's not the SB part that's the investment return (sure, it'd be pretty sweet, but Cam isn't winning it and a rookie...pretty damn tall order).I think it is bad business or bad GMing I suppose to only entertain the thought of extending a great player on whether the team can win the SB.
I bet you thought the 2001 Pats had no chance at the SB as well.I guess I didn't cover that it's not the SB part that's the investment return (sure, it'd be pretty sweet, but Cam isn't winning it and a rookie...pretty damn tall order).
It's not getting BACK into cap inflexibility Hell. This is a second assessment year with greater odds of leveraging that assessment into success in this season as well as better ensuring that longer term. Gilmore is short term.
I’ll take it a step further, I thought Brady wouldn’t be on the team for very long. Granted, I was living on the opposite side of the US and didn’t have access to team/player information like we do now. I had to rely on national magazines or when someone from ESPN would do their annual training camp visits.I bet you thought the 2001 Pats had no chance at the SB as well.
Assuming he’s healthy, yes. Although last year wasn’t his best year, he seemed like he was checked out mentally.QUESTIONS
Is Gilmore our best player?
Is Gilmore expected to be our best player in 2022?
Does it matter? After all, everyone should be treated the same; the NFL is a business.
To maximize compensation, I suspect the best way is to franchise him after the season. Of course, we may find that this a very reasonable salary for 2022.BB's gonna do whatever nets him that 3rd round comp. I'm guessing rework 2021 and let him walk after this season. Better too early than too late.

Thought we got a 3rd for Brady. Am I missing something?Players who have 10 or more accrued seasons may yield only a max of a 5th rd pick.
Players in the final year of their deal are right to negotiate ahead of time. Football is one of the few sports with a high probability of injury, paralysis or even death. Playing without a contract is flying without a parachute.Gilmore is under contract with this team, which was negotiated by his agent on his behalf, which has been renegotiated at least once. He should honor that contract. The team will be better with him...
BB saw how good Gilmore was and he needs to recognize that his time with the Pats essentially elevated his stature in the NFL.
I do not understand his argument and hope the Pats do not overpay for him..
Takes two sides to negotiatePlayers in the final year of their deal are right to negotiate ahead of time.
Everyone plays with a contractPlaying without a contract is flying without a parachute.
Not alwaysNegotiations always start before the final year of a deal
Why do so many refuse to include upfront paid bonuses when characterizing each year of compensation?and Gilmore isn’t (shouldn’t) play for 7 million a year
The two sides are negotiating from what we know.Takes two sides to negotiate

Pretending signing bonuses are irrelevant is an ignorant stance given a player would have to repay a pro-rated portion of that signing bonus if the player chooses not to fulfill his contract
