Should we extend Gilmore?

To maximize compensation, I suspect the best way is to franchise him after the season. Of course, we may find that this a very reasonable salary for 2022.
I highly doubt Bill tags him. We rarely if ever use the tag especially on an aging player. Plus, he will not hold Gilmore hostage either.

"Aging" (I guess some players aren't aging) is more relevant when negotiating contracts. With regard to tags, we are talking about a one year commitment. I can see the team thinking that Gilmore is worth the $16M tag.

The issue is that entire $16mil counts against the cap. That is why Bill has loathed the tag over the years. Less flexibility for the team with the cap hit. Plus, if we are going to just tag him next year then why not just give him a 2 year extension for $14/per year with half of it guaranteed?

I am sure that is what they will discuss.

Not sure why some posters don't think Gilmore should be paid more since he outplayed his contract in comparison to his peers. If you underplay your contract you can be cut, so if you outplay your contract why can't you get a raise? A contract was signed 5 years ago based on the information known then. Since Gilmore held up his end of the bargain and played extremely well, why is it unreasonable to adjust the contract upward? BB has rewritten contracts for fewer dollars instead of cutting a player, so why can't BB rewrite a contract for more dollars instead of having a holdout that hurts the team?

How many posters were upset when Amendola's contract was rewritten? Why didn't anyone say a contract is a contract and BB should not expect anything else than what was originally signed? I know that Amendola's contract was not guaranteed, but that is the point of a holdout in the present NFL - teams can cut players and players can hold out - but some fans get upset (for some reason) when players hold out. That is how contracts work in the NFL. Holdout fines are written into the agreements proving that holdouts are anticipated.

The question is whether Gilmore is worth the tag, not in which years that money is paid. It is easy enough to push money forward on another player's contract.

Why don't they make Gilmore sign a contract for $14M guaranteed, at $14 AAV? Because he won't sign? If they can do that instead of a tag, they obviously would.

It is also curious that it was reported we offered Dre Kirkpatrick a deal and he still has not signed anywhere. Gilmore is 31, Kirkpatrick is 32. Both 1st round picks in 2012.

You can't push the tag forward. The entire $16 hits the cap the season you tag him.

Of course Bill can manipulate the cap to make it work. We have gobs of money and are paying Jones $4 mil a year. Why on earth he is dragging his feet to where this could become a distraction all season is head scratching honestly.

I'd be interested to know what we offered Dre.
That may give us a clue into what Bill thinks Gilmore is worth.

We as a fanbase seem to always think players shouldn't be payed... I don't think it's anyone's fault either since it worked for 20 years. Being a little stiff with the cap worked when we had Brady here. Clearly it's not going to keep working going forward. We need good players. Gilmore is good. I say bring him back next season.

If there is a high likelihood that 2019 Gilmore, or close to that, is going to show up in 21 and 22, then this wouldn't be a question.
But if 2020 Gilmore is going to show up, a different story.
If he'd come to one of the camps so far, healthy and in shape and playing like 2019 Gilmore, he'd have a much better chance at this. But his Twitter post is from another planet.
So we have a bit of a standoff.
If he sits out this year, he'd being an idiot. He'll never get that money back.

Yeah probably, but if Bill does what he usually does they won't. A ton of money and he is not budging because he knows he can get it elsewhere, usually Bill lets those guys walk, but then again, Bill never spent a ton of money in free agency on 1st day players, so who knows, Brady leaving might have jolted something.

You no longer have the GOAT. Heck do we even have a GOOD Qb (Mac Jones may end up good but he's a question mark obviously for now).? We need a good supporting cast because we no longer have the Brady luxury.

He only needs to sit out until he needs to come back to get his accrued year. He may lose $4M, but SOME of us believe that he will make this up on his next contract. Certainly, if the patriots trade him because of the threat, he will should no problem making up for any penalties or fines that he pays. Even if breaks even for 2021, he will have some security for 2022 and 2023.

let him play for his contract this year and tag him next year.

I agree, I said things would change once Brady was not here anymore, more than just his play. It would change how the team is built.

You always need a good supporting cast, budget/cap space determines what you have around the QB.

When Tom was paid like a rookie (2000-2004) or took less while they were kicking salary cap down the road (2014-2018) they won 6 rings, when he was paid top of the NFL at QB (2005-2013) they came close but won zero rings… and the failure was often due to injuries at key positions rather than a lack of talent.

It’s hard to win a ring, the Pats made it look easy… but it isn’t.
