I don't recall Pats players getting hit with punts either.

It's not an uncommon thing.

Other than the returner most players are busy blocking and wouldn't know the ball was kicked short. So the returners usually have an alert they yell so teammates can try to avoid it.

I believe our alert is "peter" which is slang for penis if our returner yelled that it would alert our blockers not to touch it.
