Are we suggesting the free safety deep in the backfield could be heard clapping so that’s why the preemptive snap? It’s hard enough to hear six feet away from the QB, the center usually sees the QB clapping… not hears him.

I am not sure that Hawkins clap had any effect. Some say he had gloves on, some say he was getting Davis III's attention, some say he was way off the LOS, and some say his clapping was not in time with the ball being hiked. Who knows? Vrabel and Stretch do crazy "just inside the rules" things, so there is that too.
