Report: Patriots looked into trade for Case Keenum

The question is what is worse? Seriously putting a load on Mac If David Andrews goes down or elevate a backup who is so lost the team cut him after a productive rookie season???
Bill has completely mismanaged the QB position since 2017 when he didn't trade Jimmy in March. It has been a clown show ever since ...

Isn't today the first day Corral will practice with the team? I'm sure they don't trust Zappe, but I'm not sure they don't trust Zappe enough to turn the QB2 spot over to a guy who didn't practice with the team until game week.

if Mac goes down we are running a shell of a our offense,
My guess is Zappe couldn’t learn the nuances of Obrein offense so I’m Bobs mind Zappe can’t play for him.

also why zappe was able to have some success in Fatty Matty P's offense, because it was more like backyard sandlot football than an actual NFL offense

"Clown show"? Go follow the Browns to see what one of those looks like.
Please defend how he has managed the QB position since 2017.

He didn't trade Jimmy when his value was the highest in March. He waited until midnight the day before the trade deadline and then hands him over on a silver platter to San Fran for #2.

Then after Brady delivers ring #6, he cheaps out and does not pay him $25 mil and he goes to Tampa and wins the SB in year one while we scrape Cam Newton off the scrap heap in late June because Bill had no transition plan at the QB position after deciding not to extend Brady.

Then we draft Mac and after a promising rookie year, he names his DC as OC causing Mac to regress to the point that he is calling his former college alma mater for help.

Then after Zappe shows promise as a back up, he cuts him only to sign him back to the PS and then signs Corral, a guy with no game experience.

As I said, a complete clown show at the QB position ...

I am surprised any one is surprised the team is still looking to upgrade the back up QB spot

I believe his first Pats practice was yesterday since there were a bunch of photos circulating yesterday of him in Pats gear.

Getting a veteran certainly made sense to many of us. I think it could still be in the cards, but they'll probably PS elevate Zappe for the max # of weeks first. Once they no longer can, they can evaluate how Zappe looks by then and how Corral looks by then. If Zappe has stepped up then he can come to the 53 as the true #2. If Zappe hasn't, but Corral has, Corral is the #2 and Zappe stays on the PS. If both guys still need work, Zappe stays on the PS and then they make some calls for a veteran QB.

Another factor to consider is that contract salaries signed after Week 1 has ended are no longer guaranteed. So if they feel in week 2 that they need a veteran, but they might not need that veteran anymore a few weeks later, they can sign a veteran QB to a decent backup QB contract in Week 2 but then when they cut him, only the weeks of salary that they paid him will hit their cap. So if that deal cost $2M, let's say, then you're only possibly paying for a few weeks of that $2M salary as opposed to the full salary guaranteed at signing.

This is a huge risk as what if Mac gets hurt in game one? All of the prep work should have been done in preseason not during the season IMO.

I am sure that they expected Zappe to be the guy for the #2 position all offseason and discovered that wasn't going to work out as camp went on. However, during camp, most QBs are already spoken for as all teams need their camp arms. They were pretty much forced to wait until cutdowns to start making calls, but then at that point, you're talking about getting a veteran in here this week to start learning the playbook immediately and probably not knowing much of it by Week 1, or just waiting one more week to make it easier on the cap. I am sure Bill probably looks at the Eagles game and knows he needs Mac if he wants to win that one. If Mac gets hurt, victory becomes a lot less likely, and I doubt Bill thinks that a veteran who just got to town would substantially boost that chance over Zappe for that specific game.

I agree. It has been the biggest disappointment of the preseason - Zappe's regression ...

I predict Zappe (and a RB) will be elevated for the next few games (assuming no key injuries). After three elevations they will have a decision to make - put Zappe on the 53 or just go with Corral.

What a carousel it’s been for Qbs and oline this offseason.

It's reality.

We aren't a joke. You are going overboard on this topic.
Joke is a bit hyperbolic but let me ask you, did you believe post-Brady our QB situation would look like this?

Just going through the grind like every other team does. We were spared this with Brady for 20 years. Unprecedented and some don’t deal with the aftermath very well.
But Bill IMO is a cut above every other Joe. At least that is what everyone believed when he had Brady. Most thought we would be just fine post-Brady and continue to be perennial playoff contenders ...

Bill already taking advantage of this rule. Nice!

I really wish we got Keenum. He has proven he can win games when called upon.
Knowing the rules is one thing, but Goodall can punish whomever he wants.

Bill had a reasonable understanding about the filming rule, but Goodell stole a 1st round pick regardless.
