Mike Vrabel spoke to reporters on Friday and revealed a handful of players who have already been released as the team tries to pare its roster down to 53 ahead of Tuesday’s 4:00 pm deadline.
According to Vrabel, here’s the list of 14 players who are among the first group that have been released:
- LB R.J. Moten
- RB Micah Bernard
- WR Phil Lutz
- DT Kyle Peko
- TE Cole Fotheringham
- RB Shane Watts
- DT Philip Blidi
- QB Ben Wooldridge
- CB Jordan Polk
- LB Monty Rice
- OL Sidy Sow
- TE Jaheim Bell
- CB Isaiah Bolden
- OL Tyrese Robinson
Wooldridge had a rough preseason, and it remains to be seen whether or not he’ll be brought back to the practice squad. Despite a second quarter where he completed 8-of-12 (66.7%) for 70 yards and a touchdown, which included engineering a 14 play, 80yd drive that ended in a nice throw to Jeremiah Webb for the touchdown, his night took an odd turn.
Following two short drives that both ended in punts, Wooldridge made a bad throw on a pass to Jaheim Bell, which ended up being picked off and run back 44 yards the other way for the touchdown.
That was the last time he’d throw a pass for the remainder of the game, and subsequently, possibly his last as a Patriot. The team then went on to run the ball on the final 15 offensive plays over the next three possessions to close out the game.
As for what the future holds there, Vrabel didn’t reveal much about what they’ll do when it comes to carrying another quarterback.
“Other than just saying that now we have two?” said Vrabel when asked to assess the depth at quarterback. “I’m not sure how much other assessment … we’re there at two and we’ll decide about who is or if we plan on carrying a third quarterback on the 53 or on the practice squad. So, the only thing I can tell you is, as of now, we have two.”
