Rap: Mayo is the new HC

On the bright side, it will be very hard to find a worse GM.
The Patriots selections were literally laughed at by the league.

You could run the draft based on the votes from the idiots on this site and do far, far better.
Now, you would want to pick players that fit your proposed system, not simply best player available from the draft sites.
Do you want a zone blocking OL? Do you want agility or power?
Do you need elite athletes at WR, or bright route runners who understand exactly where the rush and leverage is and when to break off a route?

You would be challenged to find anyone who will fare worse than Cole Strange/Tyquan Thornton/Jack Jones.

Congrats to Jerod. May be a good hire but clearly Kraft had DEI as a primary requirement. That has not turned out well for some businesses in the past.

edit - maybe not primary but definitely significant IMO.

This feels like a disaster. In what universe do you hire a coach before an effing GM????
Pretty sure they already know who the GM is, but they’re required to go through the process there since it’s not an in house minority hire.

Curran seems to have a good source here.

This process is already far down the road, which is good with a critical FA period approaching and a critical draft coming up.

I think the story behind the story is that belichick was already planning to retire within a couple of years. Mayo was the succession plan. They took a look, said we have to draft and play a rookie qb and accept a few years of struggle so let’s move up the timetable. Makes sense with the “mutual” part. Belichick wouldn’t be here long enough to develop the qb, and doesn’t have enough time left to revamp a team he won’t be here for when the qb is ready. Give Mayo his shot, and then after 2-3 losing seasons bring in the next guy who isn’t carrying the weight of replacing the GOAT.
If they are smart about using these 3 years with the intention of being good in year 4 or 5 it might work. If they don’t accept reality it could drag on a long time.

I completely agree…almost all of this has happened because of the way BB has run the organization as the GM, not so much because of his coaching.

I have no doubt that BB had vetoed and overruled others in the personnel decision making/draft, resulting in our current roster state…which ultimately led to where we are now.

I think this is going to a much fresher restart than most on this board realize.

Just my two cents…

Actually they’re pretty similar. Mike was a linebacker on the 1985 bears defense. Jerod was a linebacker on our Super Bowl teams. Singletary got fired after 2 years and coached high school and proceeded to win only 1 game in 2 years
I doubt Mayo, in his first game as coach, will be dropping his pants at half time in front of the whole team to make a stupid point.
Singletary clearly was a little over his head.

Shouldn't the Pats get 2 3rd round comp picks for hiring him?

The answer is no

And funny enough those were decisions by a guy some Pats fans wanted out, Nick Caserio. Weird how he's showing what he can do when he doesn't have Belichick taking the word of a college coach over what he suggested and wanted (NKeal Harry vs AJ Brown)
Weird how Casserio finally got a chance to pick low enough and landed a top 3 qb to change his fortunes? He was on the hot seat until then and now he’s all of a sudden worthy?

The next GM for the Patriots has the 3rd pick in the draft which will probably be a QB. Even BB wouldn’t of screwed that up.
