Pro Days 2017

Leo Musso is a very undersized safety at Wisconsin (apparently 5-8 is considered generous) but he had quite a pro day

Musso ran a 4.57 40, had a 40.5” vertical jump (which is good when you’re generously 5’8), 10’8 broad jump, 4.09 20-yard shuttle and 6.56 three-cone. He also put up 15 reps on the bench.

Those are Edelman/Ebner type numbers. Just one of those guys to keep in the back of your mind.

nfldraftscout has Musso list as 5091/195. I have no idea where they got that, though. Did he participate in the NFLPA game or one of the other, "lesser" all-star games?

I don't think so. At that size he'll struggle to make a team even as an UDFA. But I liked the pro day numbers.

What........did I just see???? Hes not 300lbs, right?? Theres no way.....

Did a bit of research. He's called Pat Ricard and he's listed at 285lbs. My first thought was that that means he's even lighter but I found a report from the pro day calling him 300lb and he did 33 reps on the bench so he's definitely more than a twitched up athlete.

More on Ricard.

Defensive lineman Pat Ricard, a first-team all-Colonial Athletic Association selection, was the big attraction this year. And he didn’t disappoint.

The 6-foot-3 Ricard, who graduated in December with a degree in economics, spent six weeks working out in Indianapolis and came in 15 pounds heavier than he was when UMaine’s season ended in November, weighing 300 pounds.

He was most impressive in the bench press, lifting 225 pounds a personal- best 33 times. His vertical jump was 33.5 inches and his best 40-dash time was 5.0 seconds. “I’m definitely pleased,” said Ricard.

Not knowing where he would play on the defensive line – Ricard played both inside and on the edge for the Black Bears – Ricard knew he was going to have to put on weight, but he also wanted to show he could still move well.

Only two NFL scouts present at the pro day and the Patriots were one.

U Maine has been producing some pretty good athletes.

There's also Trevor Bates from the 2016 PS (originally drafted by Indy):
6010/245 ... 4.78/40, 1.57 10yd ... 18 reps ... 33.5 vert ... 118 broad
... 4.25 shuttle ... 6.75 3-cone

For comparison ... Elandon Roberts:
5113/234 ... 4.60/40, 1.67 10yd ... 25 reps ... 36 vert ... 120 broad
... 4.26 shuttle ... 7.20 3-cone

The north east colleges have been producing some athletes of late with this guy, Melifonwu, Byron Jones and Kristjan Sokoli.

Pretty productive guy as well, from the area, and apparently an all effort type that just likes to hurt guys.

It's fun to miss guys sometimes. Is there a word for a UDFA binkie yet, and if not, why not?

Then there was Darius Butler, U Conn 2009:

Reiss on Rich:

From the New England college football files: It's a weak 2017 draft class at offensive tackle, and it will be interesting to see how that affects Harvard's Max Rich, who wasn’t invited to the NFL combine but has a desirable physical makeup and intangibles that could earn him late-round/undrafted-free-agent consideration from clubs. At Harvard’s pro day March 13, Rich, of Portland, Oregon, measured 6-foot-7 1/4 and 311 pounds, had 25 repetitions on the bench press and timed well in speed and agility drills.

Given how things played out in FA this year for OL, with teams that had mediocre to truly awful OL in 2016 making some relatively expensive patches by signing guys who are, ahem, less than elite, we may see a lot of reaching in this draft.

Between 41-46 OL have been drafted in each of the last six years. Median in the 1st round was 7 with a range of 4-8. Median in the 2nd/3rd was 11 with a range of 6-17. The 17 happened in 2014 when only 5 OL were taken in the 1st.

If teams truly feel that there's a lot of depth at DE, TE and RB, there could be some considerable (and unwise) scrambling for OL that pushes a couple better guys down to us at #72, #96 and even #131.
