We wasted a lot of money in that secondary....going backward, are we?
At this point Tyrone Wheatly and Steve Israel would be upgrades.

Who? Who is saying the defense is fine?

The reading comprehension challenged idiots who don't get the difference between saying that this defense will take time to click (mid-end October) and saying everything is fine. Just because one has faith in over a decade of experience with BB & co eventually figuring it out doesnt make anyone a homer. With the track record of this coaching staff that is being a realist.

If they look the same at the end of this month then everyone can panic.

The two Gilmore calls gave the Panthers 10 points. The first was negligible at best.

But what makes the Patriots hard to watch so far is not just the blown coverage, but more to the point (and forever it seems) is their systematic no pass rush defense. I guess you gotta say it works, but it's hell to watch, because the guy with the football gets over 3 seconds to pass, making it way too cozy for even poor qbs.

I prefer a defense that wants to stop a team cold anywhere on the field, not just inside the red zone. Get the damn ball back--isn't that the game. Pressure, pressure from a pass rush and the cbs together.

Gilmore and Boger crew. Jump off a cliff! Gilmore should have been more careful after the BS tacky call earlier in the game. Not to mention Gilmore being part of the blown coverage **** off!
Every game Gilmore blows coverage.

I think he has the pure talent to be worth it, he just has to make it happen mentally.

I agree with that, but this is his sixth year in the league. If it hasn't happened yet I wouldn't be super confident that it's going to, certainly not enough to guarantee $40M.

If it was a high base salary, low-to-moderate guarantee deal that would make a lot more sense

Not sure why everyone is so high on the offense. Brady missed several throws, and overall the play-calling seemed lackluster.

Because they scored 30?

Some of you seem to have deified Brady to the point where a few missed throws signify something awful. He's always missed throws. He's never completed every pass in a game. Heck, even in their most dominant Super Bowl years, the Patriots punted, often multiple times per game! Crazy, right?

It does seem weird year after year that we're always talking about the Pats needing a pass rush or needing to fix the pass rush or something regarding the pass rush.

Not at all. Try again.

Keep defending this defense, living in your own little fantasy world.

2009 was undisciplined, struggled in close games, gave up a lot of yards and points on D...a lot of similarities

And yet Butler will be gone next March and Gilmore will be here.
I wanted butler to get the money not gilmore. So far it looks like a bad signing but its still imo its still to early to say gilmore is a bust.

They're done. It's week 4 and the defense still sucks. They let scrub Newton walk all over them. Just humiliating

Were you a Patriots fan two years ago? They looked just as bad through 4 weeks in 2014, and that team won the Super Bowl

I never said Brady is showing signs of being "awful". I'd suggest you re-read my post. I said he could've executed better in certain situations, and I'm sure if you asked TB himself he'd say the same thing.

That doesn't absolve the defense, and I was sure to make that clear.

Interesting to note that Houston put up 57 points today. We only allowed 'em 33.

Also: I complained about Gilmore earlier, so I should at least give him the benefit of praise for his good plays. He is our best man to man corner, and extremely gifted in coverage. If he can clean up the penalties, we will still have good players to work with in the secondary, once they tighten up the communication.

At least its not the jests

They will at worst be 1-2-1 after today, so only a half game ahead of a team that is literally trying to lose every game.

The Pat's only have 5 home games left in the season.

So now you have a timeline with this defense?
