Pats Went 1-4 to End Season. What Was The Cause of Implosion?

Why isn't Bill coaching the defense? This is the part I have never understood. He is a defensive genius yet he is leaving it to his son or Mayo? For $25 mil a year he needs to be the one doing the defense.

Belichick is the head coach. He shouldn't be coaching both sides of the ball, but not being the game day coordinator for either side of the ball.

Sorry, but I remember correctly, you have been part of the the pro-Brady/anti-Belichick crowd for a while now. If I am wrong, I am sorry. I not basing what I am saying based on the one post I responded to.

And as for Gilmore, he would have helped, but he was a shell of himself in Carolina this year. He looked good for a game or two but played like crap (at least for him) for the rest of the year. I don't know if Belichick was as wrong as people think for trading away Gilmore. He would wouldn't have been the difference down the stretch.
I won't lie I would choose Brady 10 times out of 10 if you forced me to make a choice but I think Bill is a great coach and overall has been a solid GM. He has a pretty bad stretch of drafting for a few years but I think the 2020 class and the 2021 class have some good pieces to build around. I think if Bill could put together another solid draft this spring it would go a long way to rejuvenating this team with some youth and hopefully speed. I also won't lie on Gilmore and pretend like I have any clue on how he looked in Carolina.I think he pulled a hamstring maybe? Either way I think he at least would have helped but I agree with the way the Bills shredded us I don’t think we would have won against buffalo with or without Gilmore.

Looking back at the early part of the season, it seems like that Saints game was the tell that this was not a great team.

The HC needs to do what is necessary for the team to win. Bill can coach the defense in his sleep.

The Gilmore stuff is fascinating to look back on. There were reports in December (right after the injury) and March that he'd be healthy enough to participate in offseason workouts. He then held out of offseason workouts to try to get more money, and wasn't healthy when he reported for training camp. He didn't play until week 8, didn't play half the snaps in a game until week 12, didn't start until week 14, and never really looked 100% physically. He got hurt again in week 16. How were those reports so wrong about his recovery timeline?

Just looking at who would benefit from that it seems to make sense that the guy seeking more money might have been the one to push that narrative.

There's so much to oversee. 53 players plus practice squad. Film of upcoming opponents, last game, NFL draft prospects. New game plans every single week. The guy is 70 years old. He's got the sharpest mind but the staff around him is mediocre particularly on offense. The defense performed admirably despite major flaws in crappy players like Godchaux and Bentley. Patriots need to draft defense the first 3 draft picks. The offense has a lot of talent but underwhelms with stale predictable OC quality.

Agreed.
Now I'm more worried about my Tompa Bay Gronkaneers' prospects.

Cheaping out on 3M cost a lot of missed games for the Patriots. And asking him to restructure even lower was laughably stupid. Ziegler is in over his head and needs to with his Ace and Gary college roommate.

If Eliot Wolf leaves then get ready for more crappy drafting with Ziegler.

maybe he didn't put his work in?

reports are based on the average/norm for such an injury......guys gotta put his work in

Knowing you're a top3 CB and making 7M for the year, the Pats completely misplayed this. They had the $ to keep Gilmore this year.

did they though?

what would they have gained? assuming he handled it the same, was out the same and then reinjured, maybe they made exactly the right call

I guess it's all hindsight. Feel strongly that the Pats need multiple good man corners to make their defense work. The soft zone or cover-3 works temporarily but is exposed over time.

thing is though, looking at the gilmore results/stat line for the year, they made the right call

now if his 'hold out' was due to contract status and not health, who knows......but it looks like they made the right call based on the results.....maybe it isn't hindsight, maybe it was foresight?

Go for the chain mover
Pump up Mac & have him work with Algore (one more season's try) as take the top off guy
