PATS TRADE JAMIE COLLINS!!!

I don't understand this move at all. Jamie Collins clearly must have really pissed Bill off and clearly had a bad attitude or poor decision making... You basically got nothing in return. We are clearly missing some key facts.
And we will NEVER know what truly happened as the team does not reveal anything off the field unless you find sources like....

1) Asking the fly on the wall that was present at the time of the decision
or
2) Asking Almighty God himself to send you down the answer from above

Yes, that's what I'm saying, particularly in my last paragraph--"in a worst case scenario." I may have worded it poorly, but the bottom line is that we would not have to forfeit a 4th rounder if CLE doesn't get a 3rd, which is what was suggested.

As you said, it would simply come where we would've originally picked. Since we're discussing comp picks at the end of the round, it doesn't matter anyway.
In that scenario we would have CLE, SEA, NE #4, lose CLE and keep SEA and NE so this loss would replace lost SEA not lost NE.

If Chandler Jones is worth a 2nd, I'd think Collins would be worth a 3rd.

In a perfect world, we'd have gotten a 2nd back, but the old "that's the starting point because that's where he was drafted" logic doesn't always apply.

I know it is only for 8-9 games+ (for cleveland) but you would have thought they could have gotten more.

Even if there is 0 chance you sign him you could have gone player for player. This makes it harder to win this year.

I wish this would've happened BEFORE Cleveland played the Jets.

The window for this team is the number of years Tom Brady is still a good enough QB to take a team to the SB with a puncher's chance to win it. Neither you nor I know how many years that is, and there's certainly no way to make an accurate assessment of what the "max" is.

Claiming that Jones was traded for basically nothing is simply not correct.

"I'll take athletes who won major Championships after the age for 42, Alex"

The answer is Jack Nicklaus

I realize that Brady is playing great and keeps himself in incredible shape, but you just can't do it forever, no matter how great of a shape you keep yourself in. Fathertime is undefeated and as much as we want it to be true, Brady is not going to be the one who beats him.

Both Jones and Collins were high picks and elite talents, trading them away for take your pick, a CB who doesn't get dressed, or a starting guard and a WR who doesn't get dressed and a pick which will not be lower than #112 that the Pats used to take WR who doesn't get dressed.

I loved the Mitchell pick, think he has a chance to be a good player. Thuney has been a serviceable guard, but the Patriots had the greatest guard of all-time, and barely won any games.

You need playmakers, BB caused Brady at least one maybe two chances at another SB when he didn't want to pay Branch, traded Seymour for a pick two years down the road. And BB just traded away two of them and got basically nothing in return.

Pats apparently have $63.2m in cap space next year. I think they had room to maneuver.

But a decision was made and now it's done. Not happy with the compensation. I'd rather have an extra half season + post season of usage of Collins. Because now if Roberts goes down, you're screwed. We were really deep with HT, JC, and ER.

I really don't know what to make of Mingo or Van Noy yet. Did one of them emerge in practices to make this trade an easier decision for BB? And could we have wrested Joe Thomas or Haden from Cleveland but elected not to for financial reasons?

Yeah, you lost me a bit there, but let me try one more time for those who don't understand:

Goodell punished us by taking away draft picks, but he cannot stop the team from acquiring picks through trades. The one issue is that we cannot select any pick acquired via trade higher than where we would've originally picked.

Since many assume our upcoming picks to fall at the end of the rounds anyway, swapping places with a comp pick shouldn't be seen as much of a loss, and that's in the worst case scenario that it comes in the 4th and not the 3rd.

Great, now everytime the defense is having a bad play this season, there will be millions of threads like: "If we would have Collins this never happend" etc... Thanks Bill

FTFY....

I saw a rumor couple days ago about alshon jefferys to the patriots. Who knows i am just shocked about this trade

For this to make sense the Pats need to trade for someone.

There is probably no more irrelevant response to my post than "Father time is undefeated". The question isn't Father time. The question is when, not if.

To claim they didn't get enough back, even though they got a legitimate return, is at least defensible, even if it's probably wrong, which it is. To claim they got nothing back is nonsensical.

You're the one who needs help because you completely miss my point. Since Belichick took over, the team has never had over 33% of the salary cap available to sign "big name free agents". And that's what they're projected to have. Over 33%. It's very hard to sign "big name free agents" if you don't have the cap room to also sign players to fill out your roster. Because the Pats haven't been this flush with cap space previously, they've focused on extending their own players and bringing in low-cost Veterans and no-name Free agents to fill specific roles. With the money they have now, they could very well look at bringing in a"Big Name" BB type player who hits free agency. A luxury that BB has never had..

I think you have been hit in the head with too many Hockey pucks.

Let me simplify it for you.

I never said the Patriots should sign a big money free agent.

I posted that the Patriots should have held onto Collins for the this season. The only benefit to trading him now is that they would receive a 3rd comp pick in 2017 instead of 2018.

Sciz replied that if the Pat's signed a top free agent it could offset Collins signing with another team.

I replied Good point, but when was the last time the Patriots signed a big money free agent ?

You then swooped in from the peanut gallery & made this ridiculous statement.

When was the last time the Patriots had 60m in free cap space.

Where did you get this arbitrary number 60m?????????

You can have 10m in cap space & sign a player for 5 years 75M (15m per year), if you backload the contract & give guaranteed money spread over 5 years.

The Patriots are not signing big money free agents, because that is there current philosophy.

I am pretty sure we lose the highest pick in the round we have.
That I would agree with, but it sounded like you were suggesting that we couldn't choose in the 4th round, should CLE not receive a third round comp pick.

Also, as of right now were planning to rollover 9.5 million in 2016 cap space into 2017.

60 million + 6.5 million (Amendola) + 9.5 million (2016)

We have the picks and the absurd amount of future cap room to take on any deal. I hope BB pulls trigger on a trade atleast with this move.
