October 9, 2016: Marty Bennett w/career-high 3 TD
Brady throws for 406 yards, 3 TD in 33-13 win at Cleveland
No rust after bogus Deflategate suspension

Week 5, Game 5 at First Energy Stadium
Boston Patriots 33, Cleveland Browns 13
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Hue Jackson
QBs: Tom Brady; Cody Kessler, Charlie Whitehurst, Terrelle Pryor
Odds: New England favored by 10
TV: CBS; Greg Gumbel, Trent Green; Jamie Erdahl
Patriots improve to 4-1, Browns drop to 0-5

After forcing a three-and-out, Tom Brady and the offense rolled right down the field for the opening score on an 8-play, 80-yard drive. The big play was a short pass in the middle to Gronk that went for 34 yards; LeGarrette Blount finished it off with a one-yard run.

The Browns answered with a 9-play drive for a touchdown of their own. The Pats responded in kind with an 8-play 75-yard scoring drive. James White took a short pass for a 36-yard gain, and Martellus Bennett took a pass seven yards into the end zone to amke it a 14-7 game.

Two plays later Dont'a Hightower blasted Cody Kessler, forcing the ball backward and out of the Browns' own endzone for a safety. After the free kick the Pats marched 64 yards in eight plays for their third straight touchdown. Chris Hogan, who had three catches in the drive, made the key play on a 43-yard reception on a deep pass to the left. Bennett again completed the drive, this time with a five-yard reception - and less than three minutes into the second quarter the Patriots were leading comfortably, 23-7.

Cleveland entered the game ranked first in the NFL in rushing with an average of 149.3 yards per game; the Patriots held the Browns to 27 yards rushing. The 1.2 yards per carry was the fourth lowest total by the Pats defense in team history, and the 27 yards was 11th best.

The game marked Tom Brady's 17th season, making him the longest tenured player in franchise history, surpassing Steve Grogan's 16 seasons. Brady's 17 seasons with one team tied him for the most by an NFL quarterback with John Brodie (49ers) and Dan Marino (Dolphins).

The 406 yards passing was Brady's eighth 400-yard game. That tied him with Phillip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger and Carson Plamer for fourth most in NFL history in that category.

Rob Gronkowski finished with his 21st career 100-yard game after catching five passes for 109 yards. That tied him with Antonio Gates as fourth most ever by an NFL tight end.

For Bill Belichick this was his 227th career regular-season win. That moved him into fourth place all-time, one win ahead of Curly Lambeau. It was also Belichick's 250th win overall.

In addition Martellus Bennett had his first (and only) three-touchdown game, and third multi-TD game. Chris Hogan had his first 100-yard game, and at the time the 63-yard reception was the longest of his career. Malcom Brown had the first two-sack game of his career, DL Woodrow Hamilton made his NFL debut, LB Barkevious Mingo made his first start as a member of the Patriots, and Cameron Fleming was in the starting lineup for the fourth time. Fleming was at RT in place of Marcus Cannon, and had previously started one game at LT in place of Nate Solder, plus two games as a tackle-eligible tight end.

Chris Hogan is the deep threat
Let's be clear: Chris Hogan isn't just another slot receiver -- the guy is fast.
Hogan showed off his downfield capabilities early in Sunday's game as he became the recipient of Brady's first downfield bomb of the year, completing the play with a nifty catch.
He then followed that up with a second bomb on the ensuing drive, this time going straight down the sideline.

Patriots improve to 4-1, Jets drop to 2-3

The question surrounding the New England Patriots entering Sunday was whether or not they could grind out a victory, push back when the yards were tough and make stops when needed.
The answers were provided Sunday when the Patriots dropped the New York Jets 30-21 at Gillette Stadium.
The Jets (2-3) didn't make anything easy for New England (4-1). They ran multiple defenses in an attempt to handcuff quarterback Tom Brady's various weapons – namely having All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis shadow wide receiver Wes Welker and often deploying six or seven defensive backs as they did last January in their playoff victory here – and routinely sent several blitzers to keep him under siege and force quick decisions.
But even when the Jets turned the game into a contest of power, the Patriots managed to push through and took what they could get.

After running at an even split last week against the Raiders, the Patriots ran 35 times and dropped back to pass on 37 plays, with running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis serving as the main workhorse on the ground.
He scored two touchdowns and accumulated a career-high 136 yards on 27 carries, playing a key role in the Pats' final drive in which they ate 6:12 off the clock thanks in large part to his 10 carries. It was the first time he's eclipsed the century mark this year.

Tom Brady had another strong game, completing 24 of 33 passes for 321 yards and one touchdown as the Patriots scored at least 30 points for the 13th straight regular-season game.
Meanwhile, New York's Mark Sanchez had another tough one, passing for just 166 yards against the team that entered with the NFL's lowest-ranked defense. One week earlier, he threw for only 111 yards in a 34-17 loss at Baltimore.
In the last meeting between the Jets and Patriots, Sanchez outplayed Brady in New York's 28-21 playoff win on Jan. 16, adding to the fierce rivalry between the AFC East teams. But the crowd was unusually subdued throughout the first half Sunday, perhaps because of the lackluster play that included six penalties by each team.
The Patriots (4-1) won their 19th straight regular-season game at home. The Jets (2-3) lost their third straight game.
New England never trailed, scoring the first 10 points and leading 10-7 at halftime.

The Jets staged a comeback after falling behind 27-14, marching 85 yards to a 21-yard scoring pass from Sanchez to Santonio Holmes. Sanchez was 5 for 6 on the drive for 65 yards - more than 40 percent of his total for the game.
But the Patriots came right back, holding the ball for 6:12 and scoring with 1:02 remaining on Stephen Gostkowski's 28-yard field goal, his third of the game.
On the first play of the third quarter, Brady and Wes Welker connected for a 73-yard gain. Three plays later, a wide-open Deion Branch caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Brady on the left side of the end zone.
The Jets struck right back when Joe McKnight returned the kickoff 88 yards one week after scoring on a 107-yard kickoff return in a 34-17 loss at Baltimore. New York needed just three plays to reach the end zone on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez to Jeremy Kerley, cutting the lead to 17-14.

Green-Ellis, who had 27 carries, then scored his second 3-yard touchdown with 1:20 left in the third quarter, and Gostkowski added a 24-yard field goal with 12:57 to go in the game.
The Jets failed to get a first down on their first four possessions, punting on each one. But on their next series, they held the ball for 7:54 and scored on Shonn Greene's 3-yard run, the 13th play of a 78-yard drive, as they cut the lead to 10-7.
The Patriots got the ball with 3:17 left in the half and had a second-and-10 on the Jets 11 with 9 seconds remaining. Brady threw the ball to Aaron Hernandez at the goal line, but the tight end deflected it and Antonio Cromartie caught it behind him, returning the interception 42 yards as time ran out.
It was the first regular-season red-zone interception Brady has thrown at home in his career.

Tom Brady finally got plenty of help - from a running back who nobody drafted and a defense that everybody exploited.
The New England Patriots used their most complete game of the season to beat the New York Jets 30-21 on Sunday in the latest renewal of their fierce rivalry.
New England had taken a 7-0 lead when Green-Ellis scored on a 3-yard run midway through the first quarter.
It went to 10-0 on a 44-yard field goal by Gostkowski with 11:15 left in the second quarter. The Jets appeared to have the Patriots stopped when Hernandez failed to catch Brady's pass on third-and-5 at the Jets 39, but Kyle Wilson was called for illegal contact, giving the Patriots a first down.
New England's porous defense managed to raise its level of play. It entered the game ranked last in total and third-down defense, yet excelled in both facets Sunday.
The Jets totaled only 255 yards of offense and, sparked by three-and-outs on each of New York's first four possessions, the Patriots allowed only three conversions on 10 third-down attempts. And they did it without star linebacker Jerod Mayo, sidelined for the first time this season with a serious knee sprain.

Post-Game Analysis:
THREE THINGS TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT
1. More offensive balance: For the second week in a row, the Patriots had nearly the same number of dropbacks as rushes.
2. Return of Aaron Hernandez: He wasn’t a huge factor on the stat sheet with five catches for 56 yards, but he did draw a lot of attention from the Jets and allowed Rob Gronkowski to stay more inline and help with the running game.
3. 255 yards allowed: Through the first four games, the Patriots didn’t look like they’d be able to stop anybody through the air. They did in this game and allowed only two drives of more than 3 yards as they got off the field on 73 percent of third downs.
THREE THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT
1. Linebackers vs. the run: The Jets were fairly successful running the ball. With Jerod Mayo out, the Jets were able to impose their will at times on the ground.
2. Offensive line: Brady was sacked four times (three in the first half) and knocked around quite a bit for the second-straight game.
3. Kickoff coverage: The easiest way to let a team back into a game is giving up a play on special teams, and the Patriots did that with Joe McKnight’s 88-yard return.
THREE STARS
1. RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis: Had a career-high 136 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Such a tough runner, always falls forward and has yet to fumble (jinx alert).
2. QB Tom Brady: Threw for 321 yards but more importantly he had more control in this game, getting the team in and out of good plays, than he did in the playoff game. Brady had a plan and he executed it well. Imagine if Aaron Hernandez didn’t drop the touchdown pass before halftime.
3. WR Wes Welker: With 124 yards on five catches, he now has 740 yards receiving on the season – the most ever by a player in his team’s first five games. And he caught four punts, including a 25-yard return that got the team good field position to start the fourth quarter.

October 9, 2005: Pats 31, Falcons 28
Vinatieri wins it with 17 seconds to play

Week 5, Game 5 at the Georgia Dome
New England Patriots 31, Atlanta Falcons 28
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Jim Mora
QBs: Tom Brady, Matt Schaub
Odds: Atlanta favored by 2½
TV: CBS; Jim Nantz, Phil Simms; Bonnie Bernstein
Patriots improve to 3-2, Falcons drop to 3-2

Story line: Adam Vinatieri hit a 29-yard field goal with 17 seconds left–the 19th game-winning kick of his career.
Stars: Tom Brady threw for 350 yards and three scores. . . . The Falcons’ Matt Schaub filled in for inactive Michael Vick (knee) and threw for 298 yards and three TDs.
Extra point: Injuries to Falcons LB Ed Hartwell (Achilles’ tendon) and CB Chris Cash (arm) may be season-ending.
Quote: “When you hit a guy square on his shirt and he’s still hitting the receiver, it’s frustrating.”–Falcons DE Patrick Kerney on Brady.

The Atlanta Falcons kept coming back, even without Michael Vick, but Tom Brady and the New England Patriots simply don't lose two in a row.
Brady threw for 350 yards and three TDs before Adam Vinatieri kicked a 29-yard field goal with 17 seconds left to lead injury-plagued New England past the Falcons 31-28.
Matt Schaub filled in admirably for the injured Vick, matching Brady with three TD passes while rallying the Falcons from deficits of 14-0 and 28-13.
Atlanta (3-2) tied the game at 28 when Schaub threw a 14-yard scoring pass to Dez White with 3:52 remaining, then went to Brian Finneran for a 2-point conversion.
Schaub, a second-year player from Virginia, did just fine in the most important start of his young career. He completed 18-of-34 for 298 yards and didn't have any turnovers. Finneran caught five passes for 103 yards.

New England (3-2) was coming off a dismal performance, falling to San Diego at home 41-17, and faced the very real possibility of its first losing streak since 2002.
But, with the Patriots backed up at their own 26 on second-and-20, Atlanta cornerback Allen Rossum was called for a blatant pass interference on Deion Branch - the last of a four-penalties-in-four-plays stretch that gave New England a first down at the Falcons 44.
Patrick Pass, replacing the injured Corey Dillon, broke off a 15-yard gain that set up the 19th game-winning kick of Vinatieri's career -- including, of course, two Super Bowls.

The Falcons' defense couldn't slow Brady, who completed 22-of-27. Branch, MVP of the last Super Bowl, had eight catches for 107 yards. Tight end Daniel Graham piled up 119 yards on five receptions, including a 45-yard TD.
Bethel Johnson hauled in a 55-yard touchdown catch, and Ben Watson went 33 yards with Brady's other scoring play.
Corey Dillon rushed for 106 yards before he went to the locker room with an undisclosed injury late in the game. Pass rushed for 34 yards, including the first TD of his career in the first period.
Graham scored on a brilliant play, taking a simple screen for a long TD. Stephen Neal put a crushing block on Falcons linebacker Demorrio Williams, then Graham bounced off Bryan Scott and dove into the end zone.

The Falcons were down, but not out. Atlanta pulled to 14-13 at halftime with two field goals in the final 1:25. The first was expected, Todd Peterson punching through a 33-yarder.
Atlanta got the ball back and called its final timeout at the New England 40 with 6 seconds left.
The field-goal unit trotted on the field - but not Peterson, who doesn't have the range to try such a kick. Rookie punter Matt Koenen was wide right on his first attempt from 58 yards, but New England had called a timeout just before the snap.
Koenen got another try. This one went through with plenty to spare for the first field goal of his career and second-longest in Falcons' history.
