Pats/Jags Game Plan, Breakdown ...

Know what breaks that "blueprint?" Dion faulking Lewis and the running game.

I get what you're saying, and I absolutely agree that a good running game, coupled with a defense that keeps getting the opponent off the field, is one way to counter the "Blueprint", but nothing breaks the "blueprint". The "blueprint" is just a way of giving a team a higher percentage chance of impacting a pocket QB. That's why its so funny to both hear people championing said "Blueprint" and watch the Andys of the world insist that such "Blueprint" can't exist because it's not 100% effective.

And, with specific regards to Brady, most teams will be relatively happy to give up yards on the ground, if that means that Brady gets fewer drives overall, because it is a way to keep scores lower, and to keep their teams in the game at the end.

All I hear is how the Jaguars can win this game. They will rush four, play man and keep the safeties deep.

Seems so easy....Nobody is talking about Dion Lewis. I suspect he may have a big game.
The problem is those 4 are a good pass rush against Indy Tennessee and the browns and not so much against everyone else.

Plus not sure how they will deal with Gronk and keep the safeties deep. And as you say, Dion Lewis will be a big factor against their front 6 built in the image of dungys colts.

I have looked at the Jags VERY closely the last 2 days. Here is what the Pats should do.

#1 Let your defense win it. Play it a lot like that 2016 Denver game. Play smart ball control offense and field position. Don't force anything unless you have to.
#2 Tell Cooks and Hogan to go out wide and then ignore them unless Ramsay covers Gronk. Then pick on the 3rd rate CB on Hogan. Hit Amendola a lot in the middle and the RBs should get half the balls thrown their way.
#3 Run the ball a lot. Lots of Burkhead and Lewis for short screens.
#4 Instigate penalties. They're hot heads and give up personal fouls nearly every game. Try to get a few. Those extra 15 yards will go a long way.
#5 Protect the ball.
#6 PROTECT THE BALL!
#7 You read 5 and 6 right?
#8 Play particularly safe the first quarter. That is when they are most dangerous and the Patriots are notoriously slow starters.
#9 Stop the run and make Bortles beat you without running. He is averaging about 60 rushing yards per game in these playoffs.
#10 play zone but play it tight especially early on their first few planned drives. Blake is best when he knows where to go on the first read. Those rehearsed plays will likely be where he is most accurate all game.

Good post Bob. I think we see some tight zone as well. Maybe some matching patterns. We def want to keep everything in front of us.

I’ve just spent the last 6 ours working out some kind of offensive game plan.

1. Abuse Brady’s knowledge of schemes and how to play against them and his ability to read a defence. Jags are young in the play rec ability in that D in the linebacker area, if you ignore Paul Poulz.
Use Audibles if needed to if the look isn’t right.

2. Play Patriot Football. Which is Smart, successful, no turnover, game management.

3. Use Gun Bunch formations. Get the corners close together and use them as Seperation at times, Cooks/Dola/Burkhead.

4. Dwayne Allen will be important. In the run game and the passing game. As a run blocker we know how vital and the holes he creates. Passing game, chipping the edge if needed to, as well dump offs for him to gain a few yards.

5. James Devlin. Run. Run. Run. Let’s use this Full Back to our advantage, he’s good at what he does. Makes massive lanes for our backs. Let’s see if we can bully them.

6. Brady. Give the man protection. No words needed other than that.

7. Slants, check downs, short passing game will be massive for us. I want to wear this defence out, they aren’t that young in the front 4, Campbell, Malik and Dareuss won’t be pass rushing us all game if we do this.

8. No Turnovers.

9. Special teams. Allen will be key for pinning them deep in their territory, Bortles and co will not drive 95 yards without giving us a chance. Let’s make it hard.

Onto the defence side of things. It’s simple.

1. Control the Pocket.
2. Stop the run, force Bortles to throw on 2nd 10 and 3rd 10.
3. Turnovers - if our D creates these we win easily.
4. No Chunk Plays.

Honestly I think our defence can win this for us this week. Brady will be smart and not force it. He will hurt them slowly and methodically like we’ve seen him do it before. That will help.

I believe this Defence will win it, for us. We are going to see a MP classic game plan I feel.

That look interesting. Do you believe it? The most recent Pitt game must not be included as they ran 3 WR sets most of the day, no?

That was a crazy good article well done by that guy. Titans were 2-0 vs Jacksonville and they go 2 WRa a lot so that could explain that. We’ll see a lot off Allen/Gronk this week

Yep. Cover 3 zone, you attack the seams & flats (IE: Slot receivers, TEs & RBs). Unless you’re working the RBs in the flats/ soft spots in the zone, ideally you’d like to attack inside the numbers. Unless Gronk happens to be lined up out wide with a LB in man coverage IE: KJ Wright in SB 49.

That was actually pretty cool. Great find. Thanks for sharing!

A good screen game could negate their pass rush, something we didn’t have in SB 42 (sammy morris injury).

Everyone is talking about how coughlin “owns” the patriots. However, coughlin is not on the sidelines for this one and the players we have are obviously different from 2007 and 2011. Rushing 4 and dropping back into coverage only works if the offensive line is not doing its part, so I feel the game will be determined in the trenches. That may have worked against the 2007 and 2011 offensive lines but this is 2017. Plus we have a way better screen game compared to those years to counter a strong pass rush.

Exactly and he never owned the patriots, he doesn't even coach defense and needed a couple of "once and a lifetime" plays to barely beat us. People really need to untuck their balls with that stupid talk. Additionally, the last time we played Coughlin, we won.

Patriots will play a big nickel and commit to the pass forcing the Jaguars to beat them with Fournett.
The Jags beat the Steelers by finding a run formation that worked and then using play action out of it.
Bortles was less effective passing out of obvious pass formations ... which has been his issue since being drafted.
They drafted Fournette so that they could use more play action this year - to help Bortles.
The addition of James Harrison will pay big dividends on Sunday.

I am glad we played the dolphins and learned from it in the games afterwards when teams tried the same scheme. We have gotten better against man to man each game afterwards and I think the jags will try the same thing. We should be able to handle it better now, especially with our backs. I really think the jags d is similar to the titans who beat them twice.

Great stuff and exactly why I made the thread tbh. That was a really good piece.

Basically confirming what I laid out and many others have said.

I've actually been calling for 2 back sets for a while now.

Teams can't defend Rex & Lewis, White. Not with Gronk & Cooks too.

I think we see this as well. We can stop the run from and make em pay if Bortles gets sloppy deep.

I'm rewatching the Pittsburgh/Jags game, and we have to shut down the run game and make Bortles beat us deep. It's pretty simple.
