Pats interested in Saints WR Brandin Cooks

If the Pats pull this off its bye bye Amendola BB have spoken highly of Brandin Cooks in the past but I can't see them doing it for #32. #64 sounds more like it to me I think Cooks would be Odell Beckham like here, maybe that's why BB is tempted. Brandin Cooks reminds me of Terry Glenn...my favorite all time Patriots receiver.

That great champion Terry Glenn...

Who here likes winning Super Bowls?

Folks, this team DOES have major personnel needs once some of our guys fly away next week. WR ain't one of 'em.
.

This all sounds reasonable if we didn't have greater needs on the other side of the ball. It's a LOT easier to find WR talent in the later rounds (as we have so often proven), than it is to find top end talent at DE, DT and LB.

Plus even when we DO find a talent like Flowers it often takes years to develop them. Consider Logan Ryan, he didn't come out of the box being the player he became. It took 4 years of coaching and development to get him to the point someone is going to pay 8-12MM/yr for him. (and I hope it's up at $8MM)

Ken lets not get carried on the Patriots finding WR's in the later rounds since Mitchell last year it's been very very very very long time get my drift between drinks.

Cooks is 23 years old. He is younger than Malcolm Mitchell. And you are calling him a vet?

A 1st round pick for a young elite productive WR is a far better bargain than an unproven rookie who may be another Dominique Easley. With cooks, you know what you are getting.

I am glad that I have my 2 Easley jerseys though, they're perfect for laundry day. I was so sure he'd work out...

If you don't see why people who usually make fun of the typical Fitzgerald, Marshall threads are intrigued by Cooks then you don't remember BB raving about Cooks during joint practices or you don't realize the good fit.

I am the last person here who wants splashy trades but I can see the logic in giving up a pick to a proven receiver with 2 years of cost control (5m avg over 2 years) rather than spending an early pick on a pure projection who could turn out a total bust. Especialy with everyone getting a year older.

I'm fine with Cooks, he's a very good young player. He also whines about not getting the ball, and the Patriots have at minimum 3 very good players who already play his position. He was raved about, and that's a good sign. I have seen/heard Belichick rave about a number of players throughout their careers, and he did not attempt to acquire all of them. The biggest sticking point for me is the idea that the Pats would consider giving up a 1st round pick.

Over the entirety of Belichick's run, the worst first round picks he has made are Laurence Maroney, Domonique Easley and Brandon Meriwether. The vast majority of first round picks made by the Patriots have turned into very productive players and often have been cornerstone type players. McCourty, Wilfork, Hightower, Seymour....I know I don't have to list them all. These are not pure projections when the Patriots make a first round pick, because they very rarely get them wrong.

At some point do you think BB plays more for now. He has a sensational 40 year old QB and who knows how much more he coaches. And he wants to go out a winner. Seriously a guaranteed 2 years with Cooks might jive with his plans.

To each his own and I'm not attacking you, but you liked Glenn more than T. Brown? More than D. Branch? Welker? Edelman? Even Amendola? He was maybe more physically gifted than all those guys, but I don't think he was ever ever as important as any of those guys to the team's success. T. Brown played corner on a SB team.

Again, I'm curious, not judgemental. I'd like to know why.

I'd rather they be trading for players that trend to having their 40yo old QB throw fewer passes not more.

Well he could technically help with that.. Instead of 12 play drives, Cooks has the ability to turn it into a 1 play drive at any given moment

This all sounds great except when you think about what you have to give up. You give up the best chance the Pats have to get a quality LB, DE, or DT prospect. Edelman may be entering his 30's, but he is still here and likely to be a quality WR for a year or two more.

WR might be the LEAST most critical need for the Pats this off season. #32 might not get you an elite prospect, but it can get you a good one, some one with more long term value than a 2 year (at most) rental.

What fans see as LEAST critical need usually differs from BB.
Going for Hopkins and now Cooks (reportedly) clearly hints #1 WR is on his agenda.
He's “on to Cincinatti“ but he is “on to“ 2017 postseason and 2018 as well.

Besides proven NFL playmaker > any pick - no matter what the need might seem..

WHEN are we as fans FINALLY going to "get it". Go down the list of the teams with Great WR groups and the teams that make far into the playoffs. The top WR in FA is Alshon Jeffery - How did his team do, or AJ Green, or Odell Beckham, or D. Jackson, or Watkins, or TY Hilton, or Mike Evans. Even when a team with a great WR got into the playoffs, how far did the WR carry them. Did AB have a big impact for the Steelers? And even Julio Jones, who is a GREAT WR, had 6 TD's all last season. And who had a bigger impact on the superbowl, JJones, or JWhite?

Remember I am NOT saying that none of these guys are bad players, or that the Pats offense would be better without them. I'm just pointing out that there is ZERO correlation between having a great WR and winning GAMES. If there were, wouldn't the teams with the elite WR's be the teams in the playoffs and superbowls? Calvin Johnson, perhaps the best WR in his era, got to the playoffs, once?, maybe twice? How many times did Larry Fitz get there?

Just look at the 2 best teams of the last 5 years. The Pats and Seattle, neither has anyone that even resembles an elite WR, yet somehow they manage to muddle along.

Like I've said all along. I'd LOVE to have a WR of Cooks quality, but NOT at the sacrifice of what might be our highest pick. Elite WR's have been proven to be LUXURIES, that don't guarantee success, especially if you are blessed with a good QB and a solid scheme. Now tell me again how many superbowls did we win those 3 years when we had an elite WR?

Saints WRs turning on Cooks:

Ken not too many moons ago the Patriots spent quite a bit of Draft capital on Second Round WR's who flamed out...Aaron Dobson being the latest. Some Teams strike gold with 2nd Round WR's in the case of the Patriots it's not for a lack of trying.

I am surprise tbe saints didn't take number 32 if true. I don't know if teams wanna trade for cooks when there's some good wrs in this draft. Granted cook's proven.

Appearantly we also wanted the Saints second.
I wouldnt do it either if I was the Saints now change it to a third or fourth or future consideration the deal could get done

Actually do not think this draft is deep in WRs. More slot than outside guys.

It would add depth at the Brand(0/e/I)n position.

Yeah, we're down from a high of five (back when I unwisely chose this username) to two currently.
