Actually, after looking at this play several times, I believe Micah Hyde. He told BB after the game that "he stared him down," meaning Brady was staring at Edelman. When Brady was drawing his arm back to release the ball, Hyde pushed off Meyers and went ball hawking. Not sure Meyers ran the wrong route because Edelman was 7-8 years deep yards deep in the end zone coming back for the ball and Meyers was at the 1. On the other hand, it is not clear what Meyers was doing except occupying Hyde at the 1.

Just read this from Lazar (just got home from work)
"Once he gets off Gordon, Brady wants Edelman in the back of the end zone as Edelman finds some space on an out route. However, Brady loses Hyde, who is covering Jakobi Meyers in the flat, and Hyde peels off of Meyers to intercept the pass."
I said the same exact thing before this piece came out. Also confirmed the C3 I saw during the game.

Also DM Mark Schofield last night who echoed the same thing
"That's all on Brady. Hyde even said that Brady stared it down the whole way. He wanted to work backside to Gordon, came off it due to coverage/pressure, and really stared down 11 all the way."

Also all one has to do is watch Brady go through his progressions (again this isn't opinion) Edleman was his 2nd read on the play. He locked onto him & made a bad decision.

************ even Hyde himself says Brady was locked on 11.

Opinions are great but film don't lie. Brady was never looking at/for Meyers. Has nothing to do w 12 throwing an INT. It's embarrassing.

What we have here is a play where 2 things are almost certainly true:

  1. Meyers screwed up
  2. Brady screwed up

For some bizarre reason, there are people here trying to excuse an obviously poor job by Meyers.
I'm not excusing Meyers for doing a poor job of presenting himself as a viable target at the goal line; I contend however that he is 4TH out of 4 when assigning blame for the failure of this play:

3. Marshall Newhouse, for his failure to sustain his block vs DE Jerry Hughes;

2. James White, for his failure to chip Hughes before running his route...I gave White a slightly larger slice of humble pie because he should've known better than to ass-ume that Newhouse would've been able to sustain his block throughout Brady's progressions;

1. Brady, for being too laser-focused on Edelman and for not working Hyde away from his target, if he even saw him in the first place; or, failing that, for not switching his target from Edelman to Meyers, from whom Hyde was starting to drift...Another slice should be given to Brady for abandoning the fade to Gordon so quickly...still believe that a play was there to be made.

That wasn't the issue. The issue was that if Meyers was doing his job, Micah doesn't get an interception, that's all.

This is where we really miss Gronk. Not only was he an all-star TE, but he could block elite DE's into the ground.

He made quite a few things look so easy.
Nobody is Gronkowski, but I thought Izzo was supposed to be good at blocking. He’s not. And he’s not a receiver either. Not sure why he is on the roster.

Every single week we see guys "do their job" & still the guy defending them makes a great play.

Respectfully this doesn't make sense. Again every game we see someone "do everything right" & the opposing player just makes a hell of a play.

If Brady is staring down his WR & intent on throwing to 11 it doesn't matter what Meyers does bc again we literally see players take it upon themselves to make a play.

Marcus Peter's is literally famous for this exact type of play.

I think you’ve done a good job breaking it down. But what the heck is Meyers doing on this play? Is his job really to run to the pylon short of the goal line and get tangled up to clog up space? I can understand this is not the sole reason for the INT, but I think other points here are valid, too. Either Meyers failed on whatever he was supposed to do, or that is one strange assignment. But I agree, it was a great read and play by Hyde.

What's even more bizarre is how many people are trying to excuse an obviously poor job by Brady. Bail on the play call, throw a poor pass. Blame the rookie. I call BS.

I never thought Kyle Van Noy would turn out to be the beast that he is. What a freaking trade by Belichick.

You have to stop looking at the outcome and thinking that this was a bad play just because it ended in an INT. Even if Brady hits Edelman for the TD, the way he went about it was ultimately a bad play.

The best way to succeed at something (be it sports or whatever) is to eliminate actions that have low probabilities to succeed and do more things that have favourable odds. If you do this over time you will succeed more often than not.

The issue here is that the moment Brady went off Gordon he blatantly telegraphed his intent to go for Edelman by staring him down.

This is the most fundamental problem on this play.

If you stare a your receiver down, while waiting for him to get into position and then still throw that ball you will more often than not fail with your play on NFL level. Most DBs are too well coached and fast to not take advantage of this.

Fortunately, Brady rarely does this and it is a rare thing to criticise when it comes to his play. But when you make him uncomfortable -- as everyone else everywhere -- he will make more mistakes than usual and this was one of them.

He bailed on Gordon because of pressure (that's on Newhouse and White), skipped an open White in the middle because of a DT looping inside to immediately wait for his most trusted player to come open.

Thanks.
So intially I thought Meyers could've run a cleaner route but the big issue here is he gets too cute w his release. Doesn't go anywhere & Hyde gets his hands on him.

Meyers has nothing to do w the INT. He could've run the best route in the world. If Brady is locked on 11 it doesn't matter what Meyers doing. How that point is escaping some is beyond me.
