Patriots Training Camp - Wednesday August 3rd

Well, there are 3 coaches on the staff who were either mentored or coached by Scar who are working directly with the online.

The torch has been passed.
D'Abate had an interview with Dan Koppen recently who said his former teammate Billy Yates will be a great OL coach.

Correction: the interview with Koppen was by Phil Perry:

The word prediction is a funny thing.

If teams (or fans) knew which draft prospects were going to flourish or fail, nobody would ever miss.
Some posters and the media were just trying to get too cute thinking Thornton wouldn't be able to adapt physically or mentally, therefore have to "red shirt" him. That theory just doesn't make much sense that a team would trade up in the 2nd round for a player they didn't envision would be able to make a difference this season for a 2nd year QB desperate for help on the outside.

It's only 6 days into camp, but Thornton is trending in the right direction and the media is already taking a mulligan on that.

I wonder what's the plan for James White? I would like to keep him even though there seems to be a log jam at RB. A Third Down RB is a key part of our Offense and James White can catch with the best of them when healthy.
They’ll do him a solid keeping him on the payroll while he rehabs until retirement.

The New England Patriots are encouraged by rookie wide receiver Tyquan Thornton’s progress so far in training camp. The speedy but slight wideout was a standout during Tuesday’s session, only the Patriots’ second practice in pads. Thornton is 6-foot-2 and 182 pounds but has speed to burn, so it’s good to see him shining despite the fact that contact is now allowed in practice.

The pats should consider moving Agholor if Thornton continues to improve. It doesn’t make sense having a rookie WR who can play as WR5 nor having a WR4/WR5 with a 15 million cap hit.

Contract year for nelson... We should ride him til his legs break. Then let him walk while we pick up a 3rd round comp pick.

He would need to be signed for some serious cash for us to get a 3rd.

Assuming we don't go hog wild in FA I'm in guessing we'll get a 5th or 6th

Hang time is great. Three blocked punts last year aren't. They should work on protection.
Clint Eastwood Yes GIF

Ain't gonna disagree

Patriots have ~$45m in cap space for 2023 at the moment (reflecting a guess for Bailey) which is the 3rd most in the league. Major free agents are Wynn, Harris, Agholor, Meyers. I expect we’re going to see a spending bonanza like prior to 2021 so comp picks will likely be off the table. We’ll see.

Edit: McCourty too. The $45m also factors in his void years; if he wants to keep playing they could extend him and actually gain more cap space.

Yates was assistant OL coach with the Lions in 2020 - anyone here know if that was before they focused more on outside zone runs? Or did that only happen in 2021?
