Patriots Training Camp - Wednesday August 3rd

Interesting blurb about this kid, no actual measurables given but what they suggest about his athleticism is interesting and at a real position of need at ILB.

ILB: Nate Weiland, Grand View University

Weiland dominated at the linebacker position, as he had the highest combine numbers at each of the six combine drills. For someone who almost weighs 240 pounds and stands at just over 6’1”, his speed was extremely evident, as he would’ve not only weighed-in as the 5th heaviest linebacker, but he also would’ve run the fastest 40 yard dash and had the 7th highest vertical jump for inside linebackers at the 2021 NFL Combine. Even with the limited highlight film, our scouting staff was extremely impressed with Weiland’s suddenness, pursuit ability, and versatility seen through being able to play as an edge defender. During the position drills today, we’re looking forward to watching how Weiland performs with the linebacker drills and scouts are going to want to see if he can play with body control in space, because he caught their attention yesterday.

Nice writeup and he was still a FA in August.

I posted this in yesterday's TC Thread..

I was able to find his 10 yd and 20 yd splits:
10: 1.62
20: 2.67

Nice I hope they draw up a lot more with T Thornton going 50 yards down field taking it to the house. Wouldn't want a LB or Safety teeing off on his slender frame.

More on Wieland:

"Aligned as a MLB and played some on the edge as well. Slightly above average height/good weight/thickness/above average length. Carries weight well, could beef up some if you needed him to. Showed the ability to rush the passer w/quickness off the edge and got into blockers w/power. Good burst to close and pursuit of plays, avoids trash, and finishes plays. Hits the holes aggressively and has very good instincts to get himself around the football quickly. Super sudden out of his stance and gains an advantage and plays fast. Want to see how he performs in the 40 and if his play speed matches his timed speed, think he’s going to test really well in short-area drills, plays w/really good body control and doesn’t step over himself. Want to see how he looks in coverage as well, but believe his AA will allow him to be successful in this area as well."

(highlights are my own)

Given that, I wonder why he wasn't drafted.
