Patriots hosting OL Greg Van Roten

It seems like the team is struggling to evaluate G’s.
I've already conceded that Caedan Wallace is useless. Now you can't find Him with a search warrant.

Recent reports have been down on Lomu at OT, his traditional position. IIRC he’s not played OG previously. So he may not be looking like the backup solution at either right now. Not to say that won’t change, but it would explain this move.
Either way, it's smart to meet with potential "shadow roster" guys who have enough experience to step in during the season if there's a need.

Lomu will obviously make the roster but a signing of a veteran could push a guy like Crownover to the PS

I think with some of these veterans, they're not too keen on going through the summer camps, nor do they really need to if they're staying in shape. I'm sure they'd be happy to sign anywhere at any time but not the worst thing for them to wait until the injury bug hits and then parlay that into a contract even after the season starts.

It’s way too early to judge Lomu or call this reactionary.

I am not sure they’re struggling to evaluate. I think it’s more they’re struggling to find any worth evaluating, or grading well when they’re evaluated.
I’d say it’s an eval issue if they are still signing 36 year olds in August to be on the 53.

But you need more. Never been a fan of Brown, but I’m not sure how anyone can change their opinion of him from a few practices with very little contact.

I thought Brown filled in OK during Wilson's absence to give him the benefit of the doubt, but coming out of the gate, losing multiple one on ones against 3rd stringers is not good.

If you remember we debated this early in camp last year, where you said Wilson's snaps would be limited to a backup role his rookie season, and I said he would start based on usage and one on ones.. Maybe I was lucky last year or maybe there is a trend this early.

I expect Lomu to back up both G and T spots.

The way he's practicing I'm not sure they are looking to put too much on his plate. That's another concern.

He'll backup somewhere, but I'm not sure they are going to move him around as a backup at two positions until he is succeeding in one.

No, it’s a reflection of who they have in house. And it’s not clear they’re looking to sign him to the 53. I wondered if they might just wait so they don’t have to make a cut to sign him now, and then just sign him directly to the PS. This could just be updating the Rolodex.

Yes, Lomus will be the backup somewhere.

Posters have him as an instant starter.

I suspect the team wants to know whether he can be the first off the bench at LT and also at RT. Even that is a lot to ask of a rookie, but we have a good one. At very least, we need Lomu to be first off the bench at one of the OT positions

We have 7 OL's who always be active barring injuries.

And then, and then we have bodies that may be ready for prime time, or not.

Bryant practiced with the first team today at LT with Will out, while Lomu ran at RT with the seconds.

This isn't the first day of practice. It's the current order, of course it can change on a dime.

It says something though about Lomu so far, which wasn't true of Wilson.

He's not ready.

Jesus have you been drinking with Triumoh? I didn’t say Wilson would be limited to back up snaps, who in the world would have played LG? You either made that one up or are thinking of the wrong person.

No one is changing their view on an OL in 2 weeks of little contact. Scrimmages and preseason games are where that is done

I'm not going to bother looking it up because frankly you're not worth it, but we argued about this for days last year. You said he would only be a swing backup. This far in camp it wasn't even established if Wilson would even play guard or center.

Since you need more proof we also had extended disagreements in pre-season about Mike Pennell the DT being cut a few year back where you said, "they have no one at that position. He won't be cut." and I cited usage that he would be.

I'm not debating this because you are so stubborn and narrow minded, and we have this debate every year. You can add the Brian Hoyer cut year too, where we disagreed on right before cutdown, and I cited usage that he would.

I know. I made this up. I'm a liar. Go look because I don't care.

I don’t believe any analysts pre-draft had him as “ready”. In fact, many seemed to believe he’s need a dev year. Bryant has been in the system a year. Crownover is just massive.
