I thought he was going to pass the torch to Matt Ryan, both Mannings, Ben Rothlisberger, Drew Brees, that smurf in Seattle, and at one point Michael Vick.
Chief fan buddy... a great year is a great year, and Mahomes looks like exactly what you wish he was. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait a few years to know whether you're just reacting to a great year, whether Mahomes is what he looks like (a Brees-like talent who can put up unbelievable numbers on the regular,) or something like a pale reflection of what you just saw, a Tom Fing Brady.
The odds of him being something other than Brady-like are very heavy. This is because there has never been anything approaching Brady to date. The SF version of Montana was the closest thing, but you know what? Pats fans would be bored with all those non-SB years.
Just a few years ago the GOAT conversation had narrowed to Brady vs. Montana. Brady has put the memory of his boyhood idol into the background by now.
You think the Chiefs are going to be in the Super Bowl 50% of the time that Mahomes is in the league?
See, this "passing the torch" thing just ain't gonna happen -- and if it does, we'll only know in 15 years.
I will give you this: Mahomes looks like the real deal. Root for them to keep him in the pocket at all times. Running QBs break. Root for them to beat scheme with scheme and rely on his arm to do the rest. Root for him to get into the building before everybody else, every day, to watch film and work with coaches to improve pocket presence/awareness. He's got raw tools. He's got great instincts. He played way ahead of everybody else this season.
Root against complacency.
Then he'll have a fractional shot at this "passing the torch" you'd like to see.
Frankly though, when the day does come when TFB hangs them up, I'm not sure the torch gets passed. You'll just see its refracted light slowly dim with the years, glinting off the thousands of diamond facets adorning the hand that holds it.
