OT: Official 2021 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

So if Brady retires this season, an elite QB that doesn't sit a year or get injured would only need to play 18 years to beat many of Brady's records. That could be Herbert or Burrows. I don't think Mahomes can do it.

If Brady plays 2 more seasons, an elite QB would have to play 20 seasons probably at an earlier age at 22 to 42. Much harder to do.
nah, NFL will continue to update the rules to be more offense focused so stats will only continue to go up which equals more fantasy engagement and more sports betting which ultimately means more revenue dollars

His postseason records is what are unreachable.

If he has a Brett Favre type of career (which is what he looks like to me) he'll have a shot. Eventually all the old HOF QBs will be way down all these lists and it will be filled with the staffords of the world. It's a shame but it is what it is.
Tell me about. Ryan, Eli, and Stafford are 8,9, and 12th place in career passing yards.

The funniest part is the immortal Joe Flacco has somehow climbed to 19th.

Yeah, your right as I was being conservative in my calculation.

Bottom line, if Brady retires after this season, probably the QB to break his regular season records is already playing.
And many of TBs records will be broken in about 15 years.

But if Brady plays 2 more years, then that will be very interesting cause it will be much tougher to beat and will probably hold for 20 years at least.

It’s the same as always. Just play around with the years and look at the leaderboard at any given point in history. Basically everyone is replaced within 20 years. You have a whole bunch of average QBs who were “just there” as part of the era.

1960

1980

2000

I'm not sure any of the young ones will have the dedication to their body the way Brady has to last as long. The number of young QBs getting injured is alarming. Despite all the rule changes to help the offense, the defenders are stronger and faster than ever.

If it does take 20 years, I'll probably be dead by then from Covid 99.

18 game (or more) seasons with no playoff byes are gonna cause unprecedented attrition among all players even if the QB specifically isn’t in danger because of rules making him safer. Herbert in 2032 might be playing in a league where sacking the QB is two hand touch but receivers are still blowing out knees.

I will say Tom ain't perfect. His brand clothes is really bland and super expensive lol

Brady going to TB was going to expose his flaws. That's hilariously wrong.

I agree, 100%. But, since getting established, OJB's been poison for his QBs in his first two stops.
I also wonder why some fans think OBJ will come cheap.

I think this is the year that’s going to convince me to stop using awards when comparing and ranking quarterbacks (also NBA too I guess)
No offense, but using awards to judge a players value wasn't your best choice to begin with. Go by what you're eyes are seeing on the field and not the politics off of it.

Back when Brady first claimed that he was going to play until age 45 I thought he was crazy. But here he is at 44 doing things just like always. He's a remarkable QB and nobody will come close to what he has done.

My criteria have changed quite a bit and lurking around seeing the talk about awards and stats, I thought I'd post.

What matters

Playoff Winning
Regular Season Winning
Leading top offenses
Clutch performance/performance in big games, moments, drives

What doesn't matter

Accolades. These are an absolute joke across all sports. There are countless examples of voters getting them completely wrong. I don't know if they're stupid or biased. Probably both.

Stats. I put a tiny bit more stock in these, but not much. Like accolades, they're a joke for the most part. Manning, Brees, and Rodgers all average more touchdowns than Brady. Yet Brady has consistently led better offenses than all of them. Letting your running back do most of the work until you get to the goal line then throwing it in means nothing to me. It just shows you care about your stats too much. I'd also like to point out that TD% is one of the worst stats in all of football.

Rodgers is the worst offender when it comes to this. The expert at manipulating his touchdowns and passer rating.

111/624 or 17.79% of Brady's touchdown passes are 1-3 yards.

91/449 or 20.27% of Rodgers touchdown passes are 1-3 yards.

lol that last stat just confirms what my eyes have been telling me. I'd pay money to see the stat padder eliminated at Lambeau again. it will be a great day when he retires

The thing with Brady's regular season records is not only do you need the insane longevity, consistency, and dedication to your body, you also need to have a stable organization that continues to put a competitive team around you. I mean look at what's happened to Russell Wilson. He was on target to have a chance at breaking some of Brady's regular season records but not only is his body breaking down, his team is not very good. 18 years is a long ask for any QB.

This is why Brady's records are untouchable.
Also, with the way the NYFL is leaning more to RQBs, I doubt that any QB lasts long enough anyway.

Too many of the young QB rely on their athletism and take too much risk like diving forward instead of sliding. Allen will often rumble down the field like a RB, risking head, knee, and ankle injuries. It's not the rules causing the young QB to get hurt but their own decision with the encouragement of the coaches.

Some of these QBs do it because they aren't very good or elite without it like Josh Allen and maybe Mahomes.

I think Herbert and Burrows are good enough to be elite pocket QBs without having to play RB too. They are the type of QBs that have a chance to break records 15, 20, or so years down the road.

What about Brees. The Saints loaded up on offense and let the defense go to crap that they were always in shot outs and making furious come backs for so many years. As a result, Brees was getting a lot of garbage time stats and putting up yards close to 5000 or more year after year. That can happen again.

I don't really care about his stats but it is fun to see him get some recognition. As for Brees and 'bad defenses', that's an excuse just like Stafford. He choked when he needed to and he's the master of exploiting soft coverages and coming from behind to get stats. He's a great player but I take Manning every day of the week over him and even Favre.
