OT: Official 2021 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

Babe Ruth's home run record will never be broken, but it was
Lou Gehrig's games played record will never be broken, but it was
etc....

Records are made to be broken, because league rules, styles, training, and luck are dynamic rather than static. That doesn't mean that all records WILL be broken (Cy Young's 511 wins is a very strong candidate to be a record that stands forever, given the trends of MLB, for example). It just means that all records COULD be broken. And leagues adding games is one way it happens.

And, when it comes to that, remember that the NFL is looking to jump from 16 to 18, not just 17. So the league is looking to add 2 extra games per year, meaning a 10 year starter at QB will have added an extra 20 games to his record breaking efforts.
But adding games also means more attrition due to injury is likely. We've witnessed first hand how a promising season falls by the wayside because of injuries.

I'm not sure why you're trying to argue worst case scenarios when the discussion is whether or not it's possible for a record to be broken.

That's not accurate. He played all 16 games in 2018. Also, last year, he didn't miss any game to injury. The only game he missed was the final game, after the team had locked up their position and the coach rested players.
He did miss the second half of the divisional playoffs due to a concussion last year.

I don't think anyone is arguing that Brady's win total, career yards and TDs can't be broken.

No one will ever touch his post season records and win % over a 20 year career

The human body isn’t meant to play professional football and more games every year will wear down even the best athletes from attrition unless it just literally becomes flag football one day.

I think the greatest obstruction to Mahomes having a Brady-like run is going to be simply the level of competition in the AFC: I have the great McCorkle down for about the next, say, 15 SB titles...

Seriously, the days of a 3-QB AFC seem to be over. Jackson, Allen, Baker, Herbert, Burrow, Trevor, Tua, Wilson, Mac Daddy... none of them older than 26. Idk how many of them will ultimately pan out, but it won't be 0. I have my doubts about Tannehill, Carr, and Wentz, but they've had their moments. It might be just about curtains for Big Ben and Deshaun, but then again maybe not. Herbert in particular could give Mahomes problems in his own division for years to come; plus, I think the expectation is that Rodgers will end up in either Vegas or Denver for his final years.

My memory stinks then lol Thanks for clarification

Goodell was on an episode of a podcast by some former NFL kicker that I’d never heard of that was released today and the host dropped a delfategate joke right out the gate. I can only expect that got right back to Brady.

The winning records just seem impossible to beat. Manning in second with an impressive 186-79. Then you look at Brady and he’s 230-69. 44 more wins and 10 less losses.

The playoff wins speak for themselves. He’s more than doubled Montana.

I still don’t know if anyone will beat the playoff passing records even though it’s gotten easier to pass. The amount of years someone would have to play, along with making consistent deep runs.

Even the days of 3QBs weren't the days of 3QBs. The days of 3QBs were the days of definite first ballot HOFers, two of whom were among the top 15 QBs of all time. But they were also the days where other top quality QBs were just left in the dust because of that high end trio (think Rivers for an obvious example). Other than Mahomes, who are the young AFC QBs that have made a convincing argument that they might be on their way to that status?

If being the best QB in the league was the only thing that mattered how many Super Bowl rings would Brady have? 12?

Tampa Bay thunderstorms should subside by Bucs kickoff, but showers will remain

The Bucs are starting their bid for back-to-back titles in just a few short hours.
@rachelwest__ takes you to the practice field to hear the team’s thoughts leading up to the big game.

Bucs elevated S Andrew Adams and KR-WR Jaydon Mickens from their practice squad for tonight’s game. Adams would replace S Jordan Whitehead, who is out with a hamstring injury.

Not sure who will be active but can only assume they want Mickens to return in this game rather than put that pressure on Darden.

One of my favorite photos...

The look on each face tells us all we need to know.

How tough is it for a defending Super Bowl champ? We look at the last 16, who all failed to repeat, and only six even won a single playoff team. Four made their conference championship: two were Tom Brady, two lost to Brady. All the stats are here:

I don't expect Bucs to lose tonight, but if they do: Of the eight NFL teams to repeat as Super Bowl champs, half of them lost or tied in their first two games while trying to repeat. More on common threads among the rare teams able to pull it off:

The challenge for the Bucs in 2021: Last 16 defending champs.
Only 11 made the playoffs.
Only six won a playoff game.
Only three made the Super Bowl.
None won.
How far can they beat the odds? What does history tell us about NFL champs trying to repeat?
