OT: Kyle Shannahan thought Chris Long drawn holding call in SB 51 was BS

The BS never ends.

Lately there is a lot of comments from Jaguars fans (Hey, who knew there were any?) trying to diminish the Patriots AFCCG win by simple saying "Myles Jack wasn't down".

Sure, maybe he should not have been ruled down, but a ref blew his whistle. It's hard to tell even on replay, but I can see the argument for no whistle. But...you can't ignore the blown whistle and retroactively say "just play on". The play ended with the whistle and it was Jacksonville's ball.

It was a huge positive for them, and had they not gagged afterwards, it might have been the defining positive play in a win for them.

A case can also possibly be made that Dion Lewis never technically fumbled the ball either, and that the play should've been blown dead, Patriots ball first down.

Jags fans and Patriots haters have this view that, if the ref hadn’t blown his whistle, Jack returns the fumble recovery for a TD. They base this on the shot of Jack starting to run down the field with no one chasing him. They ignore the fact that no Patriots player was chasing him because the whistle had blown. Maybe Jack runs all the way back for a TD. Maybe he gains 10 yards and is knocked out of bounds. Maybe he gets tackled, fumbles the ball and the Patriots recover. I get the frustration by Jaguars fans, but you can't assume the most positive outcome for your team was guaranteed to happen.

Patriots fans aren't immune to this. A few years ago against the Bills, Brady was out of the pocket and heading toward the sideline (link). Rex Ryan yelled at an official that Brady was out of bounds when he was still several steps away from the boundary. Brady completed a pass to Amendola, but the officials blew the whistle because of Rex's shenanigans. People here argued that, if there was no whistle, Amendola runs for a TD. Maybe he would have, but there was a Bills defender who was right there who stopped playing when he heard the whistle. There was another defender further downfield, also. Maybe one of those guys make a tackle. The point is, there's no way to know for sure because it never happened.

What I do know is, after Jacksonville was awarded possession at the end of that play, there was 13:37 left in the game, the Jaguars had a 10 point lead and they had the ball at their own 33. On their next 3 possessions, they produced one first down, gained 31 yards on 11 plays, completed 2 out of 7 passes, and punted 3 times. The Patriots, meanwhile, sandwiched 2 TD drives around a punt on their next 3 possessions to take the lead. These folks who are mad that their team wasn't gifted an extra TD should look at how the Jaguars did nothing on offense, not even burning the clock, in the fourth quarter. That's why they lost, not some crazy conspiracy theory.

Shanahan must have beer goggles on. Sure you can find examples of that not being called, and on every one of them, the OL knew he got away with something.

It probably had more to do with the fact that the very same thing happened multiple times by their Oline (without flags) and he's objecting to the inconsistency of the call. Either that or it should be referred to a law enforcement official and not be a matter for the NFL refs to pursue

Just watched this video and couldn't agree more....

I've asked this poll question before, but given the topic, I'll ask again:

If the helmet catch had been incomplete (aka the other 99 times out of 100) AND Offensive Holding had been called, would you have accepted the penalty to create a 3rd/15, or declined it to create a 4th/5 while acknowledging that the Vagiants would almost certainly not punt?

3rd and 15

Listened to this interview yesterday and thought I had mid remembered this play (he wasn’t a **** about it in the interview, he was just asked some questions about the game). He re-watched the game and thought this isn’t a hold? What?

Nothin To See Here!

That's a rear naked choke.

Dominique Easley on the cover of sports illustrated getting choked out with no flag called on that play says maybe Shanahan is on to something. What might've been if they had actually called that penalty in 2015

I can't imagine how frustrated I'd feel about that game and the resultant AFCCG loss if it weren't for the years that bookended it. If it weren't for the fact that it was Patriots that lost, that game would still be talked about in the pantheon of poor officiating. It's similar to the Baltimore/NE game where the replacement officials systematically steered a 41-10 Patriots victory into a 31-30 loss. It was orders of magnitude worse than the following night's Fail Mary which, while a travesty, was a single bad call in an otherwise close game. Yet no one even remembers the Sunday night game anymore.

100% agree. I remember rattling off at least 5 egregiously bad calls that night. And it was the most furious I had ever been at a loss. Like, even if we won that game I would still have been heated. I'm pretty sure that was the game Gronk suffered a severe knee bruise that looked like an ACL tear when TJ Ward or someone else dove at him while making a catch. If there was a ever a game where we could throw out the cliché "Don't let the refs decide a game," or "Don't blame the refs," sayings and just lay into the ineptitude of the officials, this one would be it. I almost want to go back and watch it to remember how pissed I was. The 2013 Panthers game was a very similar feeling too. God damn it I am SO MAD RIGHT NOW!!

That game was awful. I hate losing period but losing to Denver just stinks. That no call and some other crap on Denver’s defense
