OT: Chargers Moving to Los Angeles

This makes me sad.

I can understand when teams relocate due to lack of fan support.

Relocating because they couldn't figure out the monies needed for a new stadium just hits a nerve.

Another reminder the almighty dollar is the governing principal of the NFL.

The Chargers lacked fan support, they used to play more or less 13 road games per season.

Imagine if other corporations started to ask taxpayers to build their facilities if you want them to stay

It should be illegal for taxpayers to fund private enterprises. These NFL teams try to hold their host cities hostage.

San Diego will lose a lot of business and tax revenues when the Chargers leave. And that's the power NFL owners have
Happens everyday. It's called Tax Increment Financing, or TIF. Basically pays a much lower tax rate for the first 20 years or so, depending on the deal, saving the companies millions, increasing the other property owners taxes. The munincipalities usually win, win, win...

$650 million relocation fee, of course it got approved. Raiders up next. The other owners will make an extra $40-50 million in relocation fees alone this year.
What if the Chargers were to spend that $650 million relocation fee on a new stadium in San Diego? Combined with NFL assistance and a small amount from local government (infrastructure, etc). Hmm..........

The NFL owners wouldn't profit off of that, though.

This year, accurate. Historically, not really.

You'll find in years when the Chargers are a playoff team they are pulling in 90% capacity.

When they don't they are in the 80% range.

Regardless they are incredibly profitable.

They are the 28th biggest TV market next to Baltimore, RDU, KC, Indy and Nashville.

In the mid-late 2000s they hit 92-96% capacity

Please read what I have read and tell me where the cheap-ass Spanos family can't afford to kick in a few bucks for a new stadium.

Feels sad for the S.D fans!

I think a stadium can be built in San Diego for less than a billion and many of the add-ons (luxury boxes, bars/restaurants) are revenue enhancers. Plus, structurally, they don't need a dome or specific, extremely expensive land (like NY or SF). City participation could have been kept to a minimum. I suspect the truth is that Spanos just wants to be in LA and the NFL owners couldn't wait to get bribed to allow the team to move.

Sucks for SD, but at the same time, Qualcomm wasn't exactly selling out consistently either

Have you see the product the Chargers have been trotting out for the past 6 years? The stadium was always full from 2004-2009 when the team was good. Very few markets sell out games when the team sucks for extended periods of time.

I'm a San Diegan and while I'm not a Chargers fan I am proud of the stance the city and Mayor took. Public money for private profit needs to end.

I'm fine with tax deals, I'm not fine with using public funds

Upon hearing the news people in LA shrugged and went back to roller blading and surfing.

I agree with you but TIF's increase your homeowners taxes while giving deals to people who can more afford them. The company I work for did it to build a new hospital and the 20 year deal is nearing it's end. My guess is there will be new talks to extend it.

I don't get this. Didn't the Rams just move there and have lower ratings this season? I thought that it was either the Rams or San Diego were going to move, and since the Rams already did, that was it. This BS about getting someone else to pay for your stadium, at the expense of long-standing fan bases, is going to come back and bite the NFL in the arse. Aren't the Raiders also supposed to move to Las Vegas?

Listen up NFL - your ratings and your revenue are going down because you are pissing off your bread and butter - fans that have supported you and your franchises for years. In New England there is a concerted boycott, or at least NFL fatigue over the BS you pulled with Tom Brady that is not going away. St. Louis, San Diego and soon Oakland also have, or will have, a bad taste over you and your shenanigans. Your attempts to export the NFL to the world are failing - it's not catching on so big anywhere else, and home fans are pissed about losing home games for their teams. You refuse to hire full time refs and train them so that there is consistency in the way games are called.

You need to fix these problems rather than move teams around willy-nilly trying to come up with the best stadiums. That is only one small piece of the puzzle and you are failing big time.

Great post. When people like me start watching less of the NFL, as I have this year, there's a serious problem that won't be solved by Goodell and the owners recruiting a few more casual fantasy wonks or overseas curiosity seekers.

Two nerds down voted the Raiders belonging to Oakland and should move to Vegas.

Im glad I watched the NFL during its absolute prime and get to see Brady before the league to turned over to hipster frauds who think the chargers always played in Los Angeles.

This board really should be separated from those who earn there right to post among the majority and those who continue to prove they are lol in opinions.

Corporations do exactly what you're talking about every day. They threaten to leave the states they're in and move to other states that offer more generous tax 'incentives'. Whether the company moves or not is inconsequential. Tax payers end up paying the ransom and our elected officials justify it as 'job creation'.

Im not saying the NFL owners are justified in doing the same thing. I think it's a big ripoff but its happening all around us, it's not just a problem in the NFL.

Look at the logo. It's ugly. Looks like the Dodgers.

Ugh. If they're going to do that, they should have at least made it look cool like the Harry Potter logo. They even already have (or had, at least) part of the color scheme.
