I was somewhat excoriated for my guess regarding Jones not even getting run with the #1s in next week's preseason finale (as I think it's either Newton plays with the ones a series or two OR all the ones sit and it's like the old fourth game used to be and maybe Hoyer plays wire to wire).
Similarly, I would not be shocked if Jones doesnt start this year UNLESS one of the following occurs:
1. Injury to Newton
2. Newton is consistently as horrid as his games against the 49ers, Cardinals, and Donks last year
I'm curious, if EVEN subconsciously, whether the Kosar/Testaverde switch for which BB was savaged for (even though really the right decision) didn't foment a little extra caution/risk aversion in his future. Remember it took Mo Lewis to force the swap to Brady despite signs he would already be a better fit for the turnover-hating Belichick. Last year, he wouldn't even give his backup a start against the Jets despite Newton's significant downward slide at the end of that campaign either. Some say that's the Shula chase (and they may also be right).
Frankly, it's a complete crap shoot. I wouldn't really be surprised if the above is horse pucky either and Jones starts game 1, but just going by what's happened since that fateful veteran/young guy swap in Cleveland I'll stick with Newton, the veteran, at least starting the season as the Patriots QB.
