Everyone knew Manning was going to be a star early. Manning's interceptions were more from excessive aggression, throwing the ball downfield, and throwing the ball a lot. Manning was polished and ready to be an NFL starter from day one. Maye is big question mark.
The point is that even the great ones can take time to develop, and maye was the freaking #3 pick over all. Its not like he was taken in the 6th rnd.

Drake looked lost, he was inaccurate more than he was accurate. Held the ball too long and when he had a good pocket didn’t see the field, locked in on one receiver then panicked. Even coach alluded to it this morning. IN the end it doesn’t matter, if the pats give up 20+ points each game they likely wont win anymore than they did last season.

We are hoping we can mold him to Herbert and Allen, he’s a clone of those guys. I just don’t know if he has the killer attitude.
But I mentioned In our training camp threads I thought Mayes mechanics were regressing and was hoping that was temporary.

Those missed throws aren’t nerves, it’s mechanics.
We really need to hit those points home with him.
If we mess this up it will set us back 5 years.

For all the crap I got about my Mccarhy love his mechanics were sound, if he puts out a clinic tonight it will have some thoughts rolling.

McDaniels really needs to be better than he showed this week.

A day later:

1. Don't underestimate how deflating it is for a defense to call blitzes constantly only to see opposing offenses gash you with quick strikes for big plays. The players begin to feel as though the coaches are an impediment and that no matter how much effort they give, they will be let down. You simply cannot give up 350 yards passing to Geno Smith. That's on the coaches.

2. My concern remains stopping the run even though it appeared they did a fine job of it yesterday. In the first half, when the Raiders were still mixing things up, it appeared the Raiders were running it decently.

3. The Carlton Davis blown coverage at the end was curious. Was he playing hero ball? Going for an INT? Pretty reckless there. I'd love to know what he was thinking there.

4. I'm not putting a lot of emphasis on the offense because the offense needs to gel. We were supposed to be a defensive team this year, and despite giving up only 20 points, the defense was getting gashed. In the first half, the offense won TOP despite not starting with the ball. But in the second half, we struggled on offense and the defense suddenly could't stop Geno.

Davis blew it at the end there but the 0 blitz was a very dubious play call in that spot.

Nothing to do with his play. I just think he isn’t durable enough to survive the punishment. He wasn’t in college.
He was in college. The only reason he split time his senior year is because they got another 5-star in the portal.

Campbell wasn’t perfect but he more than held his own. Good to see. Wasn’t an easy opponent for him.

13th PFF grade out of 36 T’s not bad
Unfortunate that his penalties overshadowed his actual play (which wasn't bad for a rookie in a first game on a bum ankle).

It's not the fact that Maye sucked that has me most concerned. It's the way he sucked. Someone please help me understand why his footwork is so consistently poor? This is year #2 for him; what has he and the team been doing all summer? His footwork is, at times, atrocious. Like high school level atrocious.

Defense wasn't nearly good enough, either. I'm completely fed up with teams making 1st downs on us on 3rd and forever. Third and 20 should be a very low percentage play in the nfl; and there really is no excuse for giving up that play.

Our rookie wide receiver had 1 catch and barely played.

I have 0 patience left after the past few years.

We will not be tolerating this level of even handedness when it comes to Will Campbell. He's expected to be Anthony Munoz. That's the floor.

I am not concerned about the defense.
It’s the damn offense, same issues still plague us.

I’m giving Vrabel a huge leash, Wolf and McDaniels are the ones where heads could roll.

Wolf first, followed by McDaniels.

Someone please work on Maye with his damn Mechanics.

Yeah and that’s why he was healthy. He wasn’t the two previous year.

If you put him in the bell cow back role he won’t last the season.

Because he doesn’t care about it. He thinks his talent will compensate for everything.

Agree. I think his footwork and running style last season was definitely better. He was decisive, smooth at running. Last game he was so slow.

Defense was not the problem. Holding a team with the weapons the Raiders have to 20 points and getting a turnover is about what you can ask from a defense in today’s NFL. Pressure was something we haven’t seen in a few years.

They contained Ashton Jeanty, although time will tell if that was us or if he’s just overrated from a lack of real competition in college.

Spillane who I was excited about and was hyping had a couple of plays where he had a brain fart or was physically neutralized. Hopefully he acts like a leader, takes responsibility and steps up.

Offense was rough. Agree the Rham seems ineffective and I was puzzled they didn’t run more.

Maye didn’t have a lot of clean pockets, but he just flat out missed a number of times. That said he’s young and the big ok on him in the draft was that he was unpolished with tremendous potential. He’s the anti-Mac jones. Mac was polished, with a noodle arm. He looked good until NFL defensive coordinators hat a year to look at him, figured out what he couldn’t do, took away the stuff he could and watched him utterly melt down. Drake has all the potential in the world but needs to develop.

We sort of need to be patient, mostly because I don’t think we have much choice.

Granted it is one week in so I am not hitting the panic button yet but yesterday's offensive performance is what worried me about the Maye/McDaniels pairing. Josh wanting Drake Maye to play like Tom Brady when that isn’t his skillset. He’s more of a freeform Josh Allen type than a multiple reads, 15 play drive, type guy.

Hot take: Chism will not be inactive this week.

Hot take 2: Vrabel (& Kraft) should have thought harder about perhaps retaining AVP.
The mess last year was Mayo, Roster depletion, rookie QB, bad OL, unskilled skill guys, bad D.
But, Maye progressed and developed more than all pundits thought.
Right now - he's regressed at a ridiculous level.

Not really true, it’s their system to have 2 rotating #1 RBs.

I think this is spot on and it's going to be a problem. If McDaniels and Maye don't mesh then Maye's ceiling is much lower.

Drake Maye needs to step into his throws and drive them… enough with this ticky tack throwing off your back foot for style points ********. He missed like 6 passes high…. what is his QB coach teaching exactly? Get on his ass.

I also didn’t expect Josh to open up the playbook and throw in a lot of razzle dazzle, but c’mon… get the defense second guessing and add some trickery to the offense. This was my main complaint with Josh the last time he was here. Bland to the point of predictable. More importantly get rid of the penalties… ridiculous.

Once the defense got past that scripted opening drive and opening day jitters they started to put it together. The CB room needs Gonzo back though, besides Marcus Jones there’s a serious lack of speed without Christian.
