I agree with you here, I don't want to read about any of that here either. The protocol is what it is - whether you think it's right or wrong doesn't change it. Not sure why we need to talk about how masks work or don't work, or how you feel about the vaccine, etc.
The unfortunate fact is that we've only got so many active mods/admins here and those of us who are here don't have all the time in the world. This isn't a site that should require 24/7 active moderation... it certainly didn't need it in the past, which feels distant now. You can see in the early pages of this thread, there was a clear attempt to keep things on the rails, but people just do what they want anyway. As soon as we don't have someone to actively babysit a thread that's even tangentially COVID-related, it devolves, and then you're where we are now where it's so far gone that I don't even know how you'd fix it.
I could say "OK, guys, now for REALS, stop now, I mean it!!!", but I feel like that would just look stupid after things are so far off the rails already.
I guess this isn't really the best answer in the world, but I didn't want to ignore you. I wish I could personally do more, but this post itself took me almost an hour to write just because my 4-year-old has pulled me away at least 10 times for making the cat mad/pooping himself/spilling his drink/the TV isn't working/wants dessert/wants to know how steam trains work/tripped and fell/[insert 3 more toddler things here]... and even if I had more time, there's only so much re-reading and re-moderating of the same argument over and over one person can do in a short period of time...
I appreciate you asking and I do want you to know that we talk about our approach on this a lot. I know we can do better, but the solutions are rarely simple or realistic.
