Martellus Bennett : [UPDATE: Placed on IR]

you guys really want Bennett back? He of the "if i can't have Rodgers or Brady as my QB I'm just gonna take my ball and go home""?

Bennett has been a disappointment for the packers. he has dropped way too many passes thrown right into his hands this season.

Well, he'll have brady so this issue doesn't really matter with us lol.

I think his problem is more about motivation than anything else, he bet on his market post SB and lost a big hand:

Left Boston for Green Bay (If you google What to do in Green Bay it returns "No results found").
Left the GOAT QB for just a great QB.
Left the GOAT coach for a lousy one.

If that's not enough, left our awesome jerseys for that horrible green and yellow uniform.

All that for the same money we offered, if not less. If it's for a lot more I could understand.

Now the QB that makes that team a contender is gone and that organization is exposed because without AR they are the 49ers and McCarthy doesn't have his team prepared for all scenarios.

If he is ready to give it all for another 6 games and a playoff run I'm on board, but I think BB is not interested unless the you know what happens.

Yes, I would bring him back. He worked well with Brady and so what if he dropped balls from Rodgers. Maybe he just needs a better QB throwing him the ball.

In case someone didn't mention it, I think Mike McCarthy is overrated as a coach

I think replacing Allen with Bennett needs more thought than people are giving it, and not purely because of them as two players in a vacuum. Right now our tackles can't stay healthy. They may be fighting these nagging injuries the rest of the year, not to mention Nate's unfortunate situation with his son. In recent history we've been using the 3rd OT as a TE in big packages, but if that's not a possibility, Allen has value as that blocking TE (allowing Gronk to be used more often as a receiving threat in those packages).

I think where Bennett's value could come (IF he clears waivers, IF he's healthy, and IF his head is screwed on straight), would be to add a receiving threat opposite Gronk, allowing us to go back to the two-TE offense while we wait for Hogan and possibly Mitchell to return.

Is he quicker than Allen?

Bennett: age 30, drafted in 2008

6060/275 ... 4.68/40, 1.53/10yd .. 34 vert/118 long .. 4.53 ss/7.64 3c

Allen: age 27, drafted 2012

6031/255 ... 4.89/40, 1.73/10yd .. 32 vert/110 long .. 4.37 ss/7.12 3c

Bennett's Combine numbers comp closer to Gronk's; Allen's numbers comp closer to Develin.

Bennett has four more years of wear-and-tear than Allen, but has missed only 10 games total during his 10-year career. OTOH, Allen missed 15 games in 2013 due to a hip injury, struggled through a bad knee in 2014 and has lost 2-3 games to various injuries every season except for his rookie year and this one (so far).

IMHO, it's not reasonable to definitively state that one is significantly quicker (physically) than the other at this point. Bennett is clearly the better route-runner, so he may have an edge over Allen in effective playing speed versus coverage, though neither seems likely to be able to out sprint anybody but an NT.

Agree on your points. If the blocking is equal and he is "healthy", and everything else is considered, Marty is a major upgrade. I'm not saying cut Allen. Maybe he becomes TE3 but the ~20 or so snaps he is getting now should go to Marty as he is light years better offensively.

We'll know if anyone put a waiver claim in by 4 PM. If he can play and didn't completely burn his bridges here, I would certainly hope that they put a waiver claim in. He's a no-brainer upgrade over the corpse that is Dwayne Allen.

Perhaps someone already mentioned it, but doesn't he have to clear 30 other teams on the waiver wire first?

At $700K for the rest of the season, I don't believe the Pats would have a shot at him in that scenario. Many other teams (especially a Pittsburgh, Buffalo, KC, Oakland, etc) should spend that chump change in a heartbeat to keep him away from Brady this year.

I'd be pleasantly shocked if he made it through.

Why are people assuming Moon Beam Bennett has any intention of extending his 2017 season after his Packers release?
Regarding his non disclosure of medical info....my spidey senses compel me to believe this guy dances to music only he can hear

My understanding is he needs to go through the waiver claim process first and the team in which claims him would be responsible for his contract. If at 4pm today he is unclaimed, he becomes a FA and can sign with any team.

My gut tells me he'll either slide to the NEP or become a FA. With the "injury", and the perception some teams have of him as a bit of a loose cannon I think its better than 50/50 he lands here.

Yeah, I think that's what I meant. In that Bennett doesn't replace Allen on the roster, but Allen becomes a situational TE3 while Bennett takes over the more consistent role.

Again, assuming health and mental capacity is there.

My guess is that, to some teams in the AFC, he is worth the 700K even to just stash on the weekly inactive list in order keep him from pairing with Gronk for the rest of the season.

I don't think the issue is "them" it is "us".

Come on. Do you honestly believe another team would devote a roster spot to Bennett solely to keep him away from New England? Who?

Bennetts cooky schtick grew old here, but I'll take him in a heartbeat as an added red zone threat!

Maybe Bennett like Brady's Balls more than Rodgers can't say I blame him.

Hope they at least try, would like to see him give it a shot. I'm not as down on Allen as some, I think he's a fine 6th inline blocker (fine, not good or great) but can't deny his receiving has literally contributed nothing, in which case they might as well just play a 3rd OT instead. Unless they're setting up the greatest trick play of all time in the playoffs. Still...if an option on waivers, Marty = YES.

I still think him being a threat to run routes & catch the ball impacts the defense relative to a 6th OL. There were at least a hand full of plays in the ATL game where he was out running routes. The defense was covering him. If he were open and Brady saw him I am confident Brady would throw it his way.

Furthermore, it is not clear how much of this is on Brady. Allen had two wide open plays for big gains where Brady missed him. This is not to imply it is necessarily Brady's fault either on those plays. Perhaps Allen ran the route wrong, or the timing was off, etc. My point is: even when he does not show up on the stats sheet, he is still changes the passing game.

Mike Hurley says don't bank on the Bennett/Patriots reunion. Also a healthy Dwayne Allen is a better insurance for Gronk than a injured Bennett...I will have to disagree.
