Martellus Bennett : [UPDATE: Placed on IR]

About a year ago I went thru 8 weeks of rehab for a torn rotator cuff. Didn't need surgery but man what a pain in the neck. Didn't need surgery. I was lucky.

I'm a torn shoulder labrum kinda guy. I understand the rotator cuff to be much more painful. It took me forever to build up any strength in my shoulder after surgery. Felt like half the battle w/ PT was to not overdo the rehab, go too hard and screw things up.

The way I understand things is that a rotator cuff injury doesnt really impact press motions (i.e. blocking) that much. The thing most affected should be situations where he has his arms stretched up high (e.g. trying to catch a laser over his head). So low catches or body catches should be fine. And by fine I obviously mean the entire thing is a pain tolerance thing.

If anyone who has more experience insight can weigh in on the entire issue it would be kinda interesting.

I tore the rotator cuff clean off both shoulders at the same time and still wrestled a black bear to death before bench pressing 500lbs and flapping my arms so fast I actually flew for about half a mile. So, based on my imaginary experience, Marty B should be just fine.

Sounds like someone should put you in touch with Scar.

It's not just his rotator cuff (reportedly). It's also his labrum (ligaments that hold top of arm in the shoulder socket). Sticking your arm out creates torque on your shoulder (as the arm resists downward force of gravity). With a strong, stable shoulder, this is obviously no issue.

When shoulder's compromised, there's a larger chance for dislocation and instability in the joint when you're doing something with the arm out away from the body. I wouldn't expect him to be able to exert a lot of force in a dynamic environment like blocking due to the instability. He can probably push an inanimate object with decent power / pain tolerance. But when he's trying to push a strong, heavy guy who's sprinting, that creates a different set of requirements for responding - he won't be able to align his arm for stability before trying to shove.

But, we'll see. I hope he can play decently. He's a pro athlete - I'm not. Nor am I an expert. Back to my desk job.

Negative....the RC is made up of 5 or 6 muscles and it depends on which one or ones you injure....mine was teres minor, which kind of sits at bottom of RC and I couldn't press a 5 lb db, but I could do cable flys at 80% strength a week after injury...

Its possible we IR him and stash him for next year. GB already paid him $6m signing bonus so his contract next year might be relatively cheap (complete guess, i have no idea the specifics of his contract)

So, for all our speculation (mine included) about his injury severity, sitting out a few games to be ready for the playoffs, possibly even being stashed on IR till 2018, it now seems just as possible that he suits up in Denver this Sunday, and maybe even more likely than most of the guys on the injury report.

EDIT: If Bennett actually does suit up in Denver this Sunday, I may need to revise my score prediction.

Great for us but it seems he shot his way out of town on purpose when Rodgers went down.

Excellent! Welcome back Marty, hopefully you'll contribute soon! YES!

This situation has many layers to reveal yet . from what actually happened in GB, how it will play out and what Marty can actually give on the field. What is certain is that if the situation was reversed (Marty from Pats to GB in this manner) fans here would not be too happy about it.

He played in 85% of the Packer's snaps - so there's that.

He can play through it with a few needles.

Not sure if he can catch a ball above his head which can be at play in the red zone.

Same here. The only way I got through it was Cortisone injections. One shot every 4-5 weeks. Shots hurt as much as the injury, but within a few minutes the pain was massively reduced and I could function almost normally.

The Cortisone injections do help. I had waited almost a month before playing catch with my kid when I reached up to catch a ball he threw high (baseball). The pain from that movement was intense. Ended up going back to Dr. and he gave me a shot. Felt much better but it was close to a year before I had the guts to play catch again!
