Latest story on espn says that he was already playing through this. I wonder if he has had it since last season

Is What GB did the same as what the Patriots did to Jonathan Fanene ?

He plays though a lot...did last year...but if his arm is weak and he looked like he slowed down this year..wonder how much help he can be...better than Allen right? Bennett won't be blocking that much if he does play that's for sure

Well that was a fun 14 hours...We have the best IR club

He's not going on IR..yet at least. Early indications are he was already playing through this and will try to again with the pats

forget it

I would assume all the teams, including the Pats, knew he had a torn rotator cuff. I’m wondering if this move was made for next season. Though, I would think he’d be able to play in the 2017 playoffs and be very effective if he rests until then.

Based on the failure to disclose designation, one assumes that this was the same injury Bennett was dealing with last season as well. It probably has gotten worse in the meanwhile, but he's been playing through it for a while.

My first impression after hearing that it was Grissom that was waived was to think that made sense because the staff felt that Hollister could take his place on ST's. IIRC Hollister was getting some run on ST's previously. They are both roughly the same size and speed.

But that being said, with Hogan out, Hollister could be used as WR depth in certain packages to add some beef to the Cooks and Dorsett equation.

At any rate I don't expect to see Marty on the field until after the Oakland game (I hope). But who knows, it could be earlier or never. In the end it was was a very low risk high reward move by the Pats, where the only downside to me would be the loss of the potential fifth round comp pick in 2018

I just wonder how bad Bennett's injury is. And I wonder if maybe with a little rest he could be better for playoffs.

Allen’s still on the team so maybe the plan is to get him healthy for the playoffs...

I figured it was something serious. I don't see how he can "play through" a torn rotator cuff and be effective, even with the pain managed.

Depending on the severity, anyone who has had a rotator cuff injury will tell you your arm feels very weak and difficult to move.

If its catches up high, he'll have problems.

IIRC it seemed he cradled the ball with his right arm/hand most of the time. Lets hope it is his left arm is the one injured.

Depending on the severity of the tear, it may not even be a surgical issue.

If the Packers were reaching to dump the contract after Rodgers went down, then it might not be a major issue for the Pats.

I cannot see the Pats signing him if he is IR bait. The Pack can help their compensatory pick haul by losing him now, but recovering him wouldn't seem of any value at all if he plans on retiring after this season. It would just represent future rights of little apparent value obtained at a cost.

His last two tweets from yesterday are ""This **** crazy bruuuuhhhhhh.... Wtf. Wow." and "I'll tell y'all everything one day, but wow." I am hoping that is directed at the Packers, but I recalled he had some very excited tweets posted immediately when he joined the Pats last year, which I was hoping to see. Not sure what to read in that.

I’ve actuall had both, just in separate shoulders. The Labrum was worse for me. The rotator cuff, guess it all depends on how severe of a tear. Either way, not sure how he’ll be able to raise his arm above shoulder height or actually play football with either of those injuries any time soon. If he’s been playing ball WITH those injuries....wow.

It looks as though that's part of their grievance. If he were 100% at this stage, they wouldn't have a case.

EDIT: He has a torn rotator cuff. So, yes, they can cut him (they did). And, yes, they could have put him on IR. So, if they chose the first rather than the second and filed a grievance at the same time, it's a strong inference that they cut him because they were angry.

No?

With the Packers filing a "failure to disclose" grievance for Bennett's torn rotator cuff, they must be fairly certain they can make a case that it was a pre-existing condition that wouldn't necessarily show up in a physical, but one that Bennett knew about (or suspected) and didn't reveal before signing the contract offer.

However, that also means that it must be a partial tear, and a relatively minor one, since he played 387 offensive snaps as the starting TE for GBY (74% of their total offensive snaps) and caught 24 of 38 targets. IOW, he's already played through the injury and been fairly successful doing so.

Perhaps it legitimately "flared up" this past week, or perhaps Bennett merely said it had begun to bother him - either of which could have led to an exam that revealed the injury. If he's active for the Pats soon, it may be more reasonable to suspect the latter than the former.

Anyway, it may be that GBY needed to cut him rather than move him to IR in order to increase their chances of winning the grievance claim - might be a sort of "legal maneuvering" thing, though I'm just speculating.

Kind of, but as others have said it's a pretty huge difference to file the grievance after cutting the player in camp vs. halfway through the season -- especially when Bennett played 3/4 of their offensive snaps through that half season.

They put him on the field game after game, series after series, having watched him play and practice, concluding he would give their team more than the player below him on their depth chart. Good luck with that grievance.

Well he doesnt have to throw the ball at all - that helps with a rotator cuff. It should also not affect him when blocking (purely from a mechanics standpoint) if I understand the medicals correctly. It is mostly a pain management thing. Since a locker has been set up I am sure they will try to see if he can play through it. Not much to lose really..
