Martellus Bennett signs with Packers

Looks like he misread the market. Bummer for him; his history worries me on a long-term deal, but for that money I would've preferred it to trading for Allen. Doubt he would've been willing to come here for that though, pride and all.

So he turned down $7/3 from the Pats and settled for $7/3 from the Packers.

Dumb.

Eh, I can see why he thought the market would be higher. I think a lot of guys are surprised that the top of the market isn't paying more, including Bennett and Hightower. It defies how the opening of FA typically works in years with big cap jumps

Maybe. I mean it depends on the guaranteed money and structure. Might not be the exact same deal. Though I am surprised, thought he would get more.

Seems to me the Pats might have moved on from Bennett. Especially seeing is how Bennett had that goodbye message to the fans, usually that means the team has told the player they won't be re-signing him.

I'm seeing a 3 year/18.45 mil contract
That makes no sense

For me, this year's cap rise was so that more teams could invest in more QBs on the team. Carry 3 and develop is the best way the league gets over the dismal conveyor belt of QBs coming from college right now. So now you will see more teams with Starter, Backup and rookie. Were they talking about expanding the 53 also.

Obviously these deals don't happen in a vacuum (i.e. if we hadn't traded for Allen maybe we could've matched), but if we could've retained him for that amount it's disappointing that we weren't able to.

But again, he was probably asking for more at the time.

3 years 18.45 million? That's really weird, Dwayne Allen isn't that much cheaper, it looks like the 3 years left are about 3 years, 17.4 million?

Dwayne Allen

i would of preferred bennett given the price..

oh well we still have gronk!

I feel like the Pats offered $7m a year, hadn't they?

Seems like they got tired of Bennett wanting more and replaced him with a cheaper option... I will miss Marty, though... but Allen seems really great so far.

Marty is still that volatile dual-edged sword.

Allen is a better bet, long term, for the locker room.

Well depends on the guaranteed money. Also I would rather have Allen 3 years than Bennett 3 years.

I think the Pats made the right move personally. I think Bennett is due or a fairly steep fall off in the next 2 years (either this or next). I would rather have Allen and I would not sign Bennett to a 3 year deal that had nearly any guaranteed money in year 2. I assume the Pats thought the same and that was where it broke down. GB probably ponied up more. I don't hate that for GB but I worry they will not get what they paid for year 2 and 3 and I think the Pats will.

In: Cooks, Allen, Gilmore, Panthers dude.
Out: Ryan, Bennett, Sheard, .

Did Bennett just sign for <$7M per season?

As Redd Foxx used to say to Lamont...

Regards,
Chris

I thought we offered Bennett a $7m per year extension in Dec and he said no.

Now he signed for 3yr $18.4. So little over $6m. We're paying $5m/yr for 2 years for Dwayne Allen plus loss of some draft capital? I'd rather have had Bennett for $6m. Why didn't we do this deal?
It was a 1 year extension. I'm not surprised they didn't want to tie themselves to an about to be 30 TE for effectively 4 years. (Plus the deal he signed is 3/21)
