Mac Jones Suggested Trade Value

Seem to recollect that there was a lot of positive feedback from fans and media when that pick was made.. many thought Jones was the guy. Even after year 1 there was hope that he could continue to progress as most still held on to their optimism, year 2 there was a lot of blame on Matt Patricia and his lack of offensive prowess.
Year 3 despite offensive optimism he just crapped the bed.
2021 was the same draft that featured Zach Wilson #2, Trey Lance #4 and Justin Fields #11.. so despite this great age of analytics and football wisdom all these draft picks, including Jones, were lousy picks.
Unfortunately this is the reality of finding a QB and building a winner in the NFL. Coach and GM don't matter much when it comes to finding the right guy. Teams like the Jets stay on the QB hype cycle like it is a hamster wheel. 1. Much excitement and anticipation after drafting QB. 2. Simultaneous exaggeration of good and bad play divides the fan base. 3. Resignation that the QB is bad 5. Fire the GM and coach. 6. Rinse and repeat.

The Pats are about to enter round 2. There was no risk mitigation plan for Mac, hopefully Zappe and a veteran will create a better siltation for the next guy. If BB is still here it would not be shocking if he does not repeat throwing the dice for a QB in round 1 given the cost to play.

Yup welcome to QB purgatory. The other AFC East teams will tell you what that is like.

This is a tough business and BB owes him nothing but I hope they try to sent him to a good situation like "ok kid we did you no favors, sorry for that, well try our best to trade you to a better place"

Fact is, there's not a perfect fit for him, maybe as a backup in a dome team, Vikings, Colts or Lions

Not me.

Bama QBs suck. Tua will choke just watch.

Jones beat up crap teams. Towards the end of his rookie season the losses and INTs piled up except for a banner day vs the Jags where Jones lit the scoreboard up like Alabama vs U of Birmingham.

HAHAHAAAHHHA Love it. Still blaming Patricia, but BOB gets a free pass.

No, not a mistake at all.

Nothing in your post disputes that fans weren't fully behind Mac at the time. Never said it didn't end up being a mistake looking back at the pick.

But people acting like at the time it was some mistake is pure revisionist history. At the time it was viewed as a good pick. It didn't pan out. End of story. None of the other "generational" quarterback picks that year worked out either.

Fans acting like at the time people weren't behind the pick is just false. I was on the board his rookie year and I remember it....

Also the offense being bad this year with BOB doesn't mean Patricia/judge was a good choice.

Now there's this weird narrative on the board going around that hiring Patricia/judge to handle the offense were actually good decisions in some revisionist history. Or must before lambasting that decision I have to also call out BOB to gain my acceptance to have an opinion?

This is not pretty
The rumor is a 7th round pick or a swap of late 6th for Mac and a 7th,
Meanwhile Justin Fields who many on this board trolled horribly is rebooted to be worth a first or more.

Awful Awful pick, scared the hell out of me when we took him.
Whoever signed off on this pick should never be around a draft board ever again.
I think you assessment of Mac’s trade value is pretty accurate…we’re not getting anything more than a 6-7th round pick for him. No team’s dying to add an athletically challenged, weak armed QB with questionable mental fortitude and poor decision making habits.

Regarding Fields, no team’s gonna give up their 1st round pick for him. He has higher trade value than Mac because of his arm and other superior physical traits, but so far he has shown that he lacks other critical QB qualities like being able to read a defense and go through progressions. He’s basically a RB playing QB.

Fields isn't going to develop into much of anything if he hasn't at this point. I doubt he will get a 1st.

Teams will pine over his physical skills. But it will be his 4th year. He's not suddenly turning into an elite QB

You trade him to the highest bidder. Under no circumstances do you take a worse offer because it’s better for the failed player who sucked.

While I agree with you, I can envision BB trying to give him the best possible opportunity.

Why would he do that? He will get the most value he can, period.

I don’t see how Jones is worth anything in a trade. It would be hard to play worse than he did this year. Cut him loose and if he can scrap his way back into a job somewhere then good for him.

I wouldn’t give up anything for him, as he’s going to want more than he’s worth. But I wouldn’t write him off completely either. If Geno Smith can turn it around 10 years after it looked like he was toast then anyone can. Except for Cam Newton, he sucks.

The problem with QB’s in particular is that so much of it depends upon their work ethic, football IQ, and character when things get tough, and that’s really hard to gauge just watching aYouTube highlights. When they come from big programs with exceptional talent around them it’s even harder. This really proved true with Jones, as he’s fine when his receiver is wide open, but struggles mightily fitting it past defenders in good coverage. And despite having glowing recommendations about his character he really didn’t seem to do the work necessary to improve. He looked exactly the same physically as when he came out of school, his arm didn’t improve, and his decision making got worse. Brady, on the other hand, clearly did the work and just kept getting better throughout his career. He never acted like he had it made. And always worked his ass off. And that’s what you have to do to really succeed as a QB in the NFL.

We will be entering this simulation after Belichick gets fired and we draft Maye or Daniels.

Comments:

1.) We should be happy if we can get anything at all for Jones. I agree that it is time to part ways with Jones even if it means outright releasing him. We aren't picking up his 5th year option (~20-23M, IIRC) for damn sure...and I don't think he will get another chance here to prove himself. He will have to fight up the depth chart on another NFL team. It would not surprise me the least to see him be a NFL starter again in the future though, just not in Foxborough.

2.) @Triumph has a great point.... BOB can't have done a better job than Patricia/Judge. Someone should compare the offensive totals through week 16 of both seasons. Keep in mind that BOB had Zappe make more starts, a lesser OL (due to injuries), no Bourne the last 5-6 weeks, and JuJu instead of Meyers. That would be the only major differences other than at OC..... I am curious as to how much worse, if they are, the numbers are....

To the poster who quoted my hoping against hope we could win win with Jones,
And of course I wanted the signal caller to be good.
Dig up the draft forums where I have Him ranked below QBs who were in the middle rounds. It was a rollercoaster I looked at his stats assumed he was really good and all the talk of the niners taking him in the top 3 i didn’t thoroughly go over his tape.
Once about three weeks before the draft came about I watched the tape and read the reports and saw someone who had below average arm talent on a loaded Bama team.
If you go back to the day of the draft I wanted Fields.
And was furious when we didn’t go up and get him.
Them a plethora of emotions when they show our draft room and pan on Mac Jones.
My head starts telling me Bill knows what he’s doing im
Wrong about him you can’t measure his heart at the combine blah blah.
I even said omg are we gookg
To take him we are going to frickin take Mac Jones.
Went back and watched the tape again and said ok we just need to fix that arm strength.
And I bought into Bill knew what he was doing cause we desperately needed a Franchise QB.
Yes i buy every draft picks jersey and memorabilia on the Pats.
I always have. But I had Kellen Mond, and Davis Mills and others ranked in front of Jones.
But fell for the in BB we trust
Made a mistake on what Cowboys got for Lance my mistake,
But read a legitimate source about Fields and Jones value to other teams and it had me furious.

While I agree with you, I can envision BB trying to give him the best possible opportunity.
Then that’s not doing “what’s best” for the Team.

I don’t understand people getting all worked up over rumors about what they can get in trade.

Rumors, reports… none of that matters. All that matters is the free market value at the time.

Pats fans were convinced they would get multiple firsts back for both Matt Cassel and JimmyG… both were worth a 2nd and change to teams that had the resources.

For Mac? I’ve got some sour patch kids loose in my pocket, they’re nice and warm…

While I agree with you, I can envision BB trying to give him the best possible opportunity.
The Pats aren’t going to be sentimental when deciding what to do with Mac. They’ll take the highest offer which will be late round draft pick lMHO.
