This situation is like a puzzle.
Only time will tell
I could be wrong, but I think the pact is up on 3/17 at 4:00pm, which is one day prior to free agency, so I think that it’s possible that he could still engage in talks via the legal tampering period, and maybe that’s been the plan all along. That is a good point as well. It’s not just paying Brady but also losing the chance to stretch the cap hit from his existing contract. If I recall correctly I also believe the contract voids a few days before FA so they don’t have the option to extend during the “legal tampering period” either.
Yeah looks like that's correct based on some quick googling... Though unsure how that works, since on 3/16 he's still under contract with NE so shouldn't be able to talk to other teams, but on 3/17 his contract is voided, and can talk to other teams then, but then that cap hit is accelerated into the 2020 cap...I could be wrong, but I think the pact is up on 3/17 at 4:00pm, which is one day prior to free agency, so I think that it’s possible that he could still engage in talks via the legal tampering period, and maybe that’s been the plan all along.
I think we still drop roughly 6 1/2 million this year if he goes past 3/18 not the full 13 but ..... I might be wrong. There is no salary cap imperative for Brady to be extended before the new league year begins which is a common misconception.
Without an extension, the $6.75 of unamortized bonus money which was scheduled to hit the 2021 salary cap gets rolled up into the 2020 cap making a total of $13.5 million of dead money in 2020.
If Brady were to resign after the new league year begins, his 2021 compensation would consist of salary and bonus structured in a way to push at least $6.75 of bonus money into the 2021 cap making up for the dead money roll up to the 2020 cap.
Perhaps you can join the exodus and make it a clean slate.if Brady leaves get ready for a 5-11 year folks! Stidham a JAG, our weapons on offense JAGS, NO tight ends, Edelman aging and injured, our safeties aging, Thuney walking in FA.
I wonder if Brady would be allowed talk to other teams earlier than the legal tampering period if the Patriots granted permission? They did that with Deion Branch if I recall. Would be in the best interest of both parties to have Brady begin taking visits on, say, March 1 but not be allowed to sign until March 18. It would let Brady take thorough visits and tours while still giving the Pats the chance to stay in it and to be in place to execute a backup plan at the beginning of official free agency rather than scrambling later on if Brady signs elsewhere after a week.Yeah looks like that's correct based on some quick googling... I realize it's a "legal tampering" period for a reason but that generally is reserved for players whose contracts are definitively expiring in a couple days - Brady is technically under contract for 2 more years but has a void clause in the absence of an extension - so I am unclear if he still qualifies to be "legally tampered" with or not.
Yeah, it would be nice to get some clarity on the matter. Tag me if you happen to hear anything outside of this thread, and I’ll do the same.I realize it's a "legal tampering" period for a reason but that generally is reserved for players whose contracts are definitively expiring in a couple days - Brady is technically under contract for 2 more years but has a void clause in the absence of an extension - so I am unclear if he still qualifies to be "legally tampered" with or not.
