After 400 years, one would have thought the Puritan gene had been bred out of the cement head population.
Blue laws have been relaxed
Wellesley sells booze now
Casinos and gambling are the new norm
Weed is here to stay
But give a nice tip to two exotic flowers for services rendered and the wood gets stacked for a Salem trial by bonfire
Tip of the cap to the Puritans. They didn't burn any witches at the stake, they just hung them (except one poor guy who was crushed with a board because he wouldn't admit his sorcery). Hey, you gotta find a positive in any bad situation.
But to be serious, this is now less of the legacy of puritanism but more about the reality of politics. The 'puritanical' laws you mentioned have abated because the politics of it isn't nearly as costly. But when it comes to sex there still is a wide enough cross section, which will include in part purantism, to make it a political negative. There's a number of laws now that would be polar opposite to the extreme of puratanistic but again those don't strike a larger cross section of political cost like sex does, IMHO.
