Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

I don't mind Belichick being criticized, because I sometimes do it myself. What I have a problem with is "Monty Beisel" being offered as some proof that Belichick "is human." That's like reminding me that Ted Williams made an out six times out of every ten at bats in 1941.

Yet, if somebody made the argument that Ted Williams hit successfully during every at-bat, one would probably cite that same statistic.

Again, there's no harm in signing a guy, throwing him into training camp competition, and see what he's got. But just because it happens doesn't mean it's the beginning of a rousing success story. The truth is, if the Jets or Dolphins signed Lynch, most of these same posters would be laughing at them for signing a washed up player. But because it's Belichick, it's a genius move.

THAT is a very good point, and very accurate. At least, I know I would be. :)

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

to paraphrase a brillant man
"he is what he is"

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Considering the Broncos always seem to have the Pats number, this signing could help the Pats "learn" a little bit more about the defense or at least philosophy that the Broncos have used or plan on using in this year's game. Nothing wrong with bringing in a guy from a team that gives you trouble in order to get the inside scoop.

Heck, Steelers brought in Leftwich and I'm sure come the game with the Jags he'll be front and center in the film room.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Thread prediction...

Homers "Nice! Lynch is going to be a GREAT fit here. Belichick will use him in some genius way that will showcase all of good qualities, while hiding all of his weakness's!! " :rocker:

:disagreement:

Non-Homer's - "This is a waste of a roster spot. Lynch is old, slow, and well past his prime. I thought we were trying to get younger!"

then what am i because i agree partially with both.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

We signed our #4 safety. Isn't he the best #4 safety in the league?

That's a good point, and from a Steelers fan no less.

I'm not sure how much Lynch has left in the tank, but you could say the same for Rodney. If they're rotating or not playing that much, I think you'll see less wear and tear on them and both will probably play better. I mean, he's not the John Lynch of 2000, but he could be decent. I don't think Belichick would've signed him if he didn't think he could contribute.

That would depend on what he was signed for. Signing him to start is different than signing him to be a role player.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

This isn't even debatable as to whether its a good signing.

Its 2 weeks til the first game - do you guys think we're gonna trade for a young pro bowler at S?

Tank Williams goes down and Lynch comes in. It's a good move and very likely an upgrade.

Zackly......... it's the #4 folks, and for the #4 he'll do fine, and he brings a lot of intangibles to the table. I think he could also be used creatively as a situational LB too, as another poster said.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Mods - Why is the OPs title not changed? - Lynch has NOT signed...Yet - Its misleading

Which is what makes the claim that calling it a genius move while hypothetically laughing at other teams in the division for making the same move a little dubious. Because if the Jets or Fins signed him, it would be to serve as a starter or number 3 guy, which WOULD be funny. Maybe not the Jets, their starters are solid (especially Rhodes), I don't know how their first guy off the bench, (presumably Worrell), stands with their coaching staff, but I'm guessing he'd probably take a backseat to Lynch. Maybe even Smith as a starter, but I doubt that. Either way, it sure as hell wouldn't be to fill a specialist/back-end-of-the-roster spot.

I hear ya. My entire day was ruined when I found out he didn't really sign. :p

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Tank had that role locked. Got hurt. Totally new situation. Time for Option B.

The Pats play a majority of running teams this season. I wonder if BB occasionally makes a short term, 1 season vet signing decision based on characteristics of a season's specific opponents? I see both Lynch & tank as being strongest against the run.

i think that we play denver this year is one of the main reasons for signing him. we always seem to lose to denver so BB probably picked lynch up to pick his brians.

Yea, That's probably why they picked him up.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

Lynch was constantly exploited last year by teams with good passing offenses. Without knowing BBs plans for him, there may have been better players available with lesser name recognition.

I personally doubt he is any more of a coverage liability than Harrison in OUR defense.... and that assumes that we are even considering to play him in the starting SS position. I don't think we are, barring massive injuries.

It is more likely to be "Tank out - Lynch in" for the hybrid LB role they have been gameplanning. In that role, will Lynch perform adequately? ... perhaps even excel? I think he will. I think he is as good as Tank in that particular role.

I'd love to know who you think is a better player available to replace the injured Tank Williams with at this point in the year. I can't think of anyone even close.

All that said, I think your "couldn't hurt" evaluation of this signing is fair enough. I think it is managing expectations to say that, but we can't all agree on everything.

Re: John Lynch signs with Pats

something tells me if he isnt signed by now that hes not going to sign, just a hunch, why wouldd bb go out of his way to say he hasnt signed???

He hasn't signed yet but has agreed to the contract offerred and passed his physical.

The only reason I can think of for a delay is that it will cause the Pats to have to cut someone. I think another posted pointed out that they may be deciding who to cut... or be in the process of letting that player know. Who knows?

I doubt BB says anything at the press conference if he doesn't think it is in the bag.

Agree with this. This guy is a Cover 2 safety that's lost about 2 steps. He'll be brought in as a nickel/dime linebacker or on goalline and he'll cover the short zones and give run force.

And I believe this team has given guys physicals before, then let them walk. Don't know why people are thinking this is a slam dunk done deal.

You could actually say the opposite. If it was a forgone conclusion he would not need to spell the rumors but since it isn't forgone yet he felt it neccessary to spell the rumors.

Exactly - I would lock this until we hear one way or the other if he becomes a Patriot or not
