Patriots Player Departure Jimmy Garoppolo traded to SF for 2018 2nd round draft pick

I hate to see him go.

Multiple sources reported that the Browns were willing to part with a 1st prior to the draft. This move smells of desperation.

Terrible team management. Belching got backed into a corner.
Sorry if it doesn't fit the "Patriots are fools" narrative, but:

49ers will probably be in top 3 last place at the end of the season...maybe even dead last. We pick in top 3 of 2nd round. So this 2nd round pick is more like a light 1st rounder. Not what I was hoping for, but not terrible either.

Not sure how I feel about this. I truly felt Garoppolo might be the QB of the future. Trading him now (along with Brisett) all but guarantees that the Patriots dynasty will live and die with Tom Brady .... and most fans I think will be okay with that
I mean...on the death of the dynasty point, it probably did anyway. The idea that NE would be set at QB thru 2030 or whatever if they could just keep Jimmy G was always, at best, wishful thinking fan fiction.

They can pick the "next JG" in a very interesting QB draft, in which they now have 2 top-35 picks, and then the board can spend Bradys retirement years (so...starting 2022?) comparing that guy to Jimmy.

Really wish Jimmy G the best....as long as he doesn’t torch our ***!! He has been nothing but a class act here....waiting for his shot....will be pulling for ya Jimmy!

I love you, Jimmy.

QUOTE="Sciz, post: 5132272, member: 17857"]This isn’t surprising value. The 49ers aren’t getting Garoppolo in time to fix their 2017 season, so it’s basically a second round pick for a half-season tryout and exclusive negotiating rights.

I’m more interested in the thought process behind being willing to trade him away now. Will be interesting to see who they bring in as the backup.[/QUOTE]

Hoyer knows the system but better seriously say prayers that TFB doesn’t get hurt....

!!!!

I called this! Makes way too much sense not to happen. We need a backup QB.

He should be happy....they just scored majorly....Jimmy should help resurrect that franchise
For sure. I was sad to see Jimmy go, but my dad texted me that since he’s a Niner then he “stayed in the family.” So I still get to root for him in a way, lol.

Love the deal. In theory, we basically got a low 1st rounder for an unproven commodity.

You mean Kaepernick, not Kapernick, right? This is important, because I don't want to post Kapernick and get you angry, but if it's Kaepernick, I need to get it correct, in order to avoid offending your feelings.

So...

Kaepernick or Kapernick? Which is verboten?
Colin?

It's a quirk in the rules that makes no sense.

Impacted the Pats before, too. The Eagles signed Isaac Sopoaga from the 49ers prior to the 2013 season. Pats traded for him at the trading deadline. Not only did he wind up doing nothing and getting benched, but his compensatory status transferred from the Eagles to the Pats too and we lost out of a scheduled 5th round comp pick in 2014.

If you release the player, the liability (if any) still sticks with the signing team. The Steelers signed LaGarrett Blount from the Pats prior to 2014 but cut him after the trade deadline, with the Pats picking him up. The Pats still got a comp pick in 2015 and he still counted against the Steelers in the comp formula because he was released; if he had been traded to the Pats then the Pats would have obtained the liability and thus it would have cancelled out.

Doesn't make sense, but it's how it works.
Being released wouldn't he also be eligible for termination pay, allowing him to " double dip" and get another salary from the Pats which wouldn't happen had he been traded???

The other side of the equation is - would Kaep sign? Backup job only, league minimum, and if you say the fans and organization is racist...why would he sign here?????
No thank you. Hes sub-standard, attention grabbing garbage.

I guess I'll just have to be considered a racist.

A team's unilateral decision of "Eh, too much trouble to re-sign" sounds a little odd.

How does this lead to Bill "falling out of love" with JG? And why is it odd to make the trade if you've come to the conclusion that you won't keep him around next year without a franchise tag?

I ****ing hate this trade.
We gave up HUGE return value in exchange for an extra 8 weeks of Jimmy holding on to a clipboard on the sidelines.

Maybe They ...(or as you say We) gave up a few positions in the draft (or as you say...gave up HUGE return) ...in exchange for 8 weeks of scouting top college QB's to find one who fits the Pats system...(or as you say in exchange for an extra 8 weeks of Jimmy holding on to a clipboard on the sidelines).

He was very good at holding that clipboard....so maybe you're correct in your assumptions....maybe

The ****ing balls on Lynch asking for Brady
I can envision BB asking Lynch what he was offering... and then BB telling Brady, " "Hey Tom the 49ers wanted you but only offered xxxx"
Tom- " screw it, I'm sticking around until 2020 when we play them again to teach them a lesson."
