Patriots Player Departure Jimmy Garoppolo traded to SF for 2018 2nd round draft pick

Brian Hoyer was originally part of the trade but the Pats asked him to be removed from the deal so that they don't lose a 3rd round comp pick (I don't know how that works). Brian Hoyer has been instead released from the 49ers and it is believed he will sign with the Patriots as a FA and SF will end up picking up some of his salary if I understand that correctly.

In short Brian Hoyer will most likely be the back up QB.
It wasn’t about comp picks it was about money.
100% that BB had hoyer on board before pulling the trigger.

Come on, you know we're winning with Bledsoe's backup, and have been for seventeen years.

That was a once in a lifetime event. Pure luck. Comparable to winning the Powerball.

I highly doubt he is miserable. He got a boatload of money. He's probably ecstatic. You assume all players value winning the way we do. That just isn't true. in a lot of cases we (fans) care far more about winning than some of the players do. Remember, it has been reported that this is a guy who does not care about football.
Miserable is not the right word, he is bitter. And he may well have reason to be if the Pats were leaking a false story that Collins was asking for Von Miller money.

But he got his money and he should probably just move on.

Does the money Hoyer receives affect the comp pick for Bennett?

Read a tweet earlier in the thread that referred to the comp pick.

No San Fran released him so it wont affect our comp pick

Agreed. Be at peace, those of you fretting:

"One of the first thoughts that comes to mind following the Patriots reportedly trading Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers for a 2018 second-round pick is what happened to all the first-rounders the Patriots were supposedly offered around the draft by the Browns?

At the time, the thought was the Browns were offering at least one first-round pick with even up to four, according to Adam Schefter. Well, apparently that wasn't the case.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Browns never offered the Patriots a first-round pick. It was a second-round pick and change.

The Patriots waited and got the 49ers' second-round pick, which will be one of the first couple in the second round with them starting 0-7, so basically a late first-rounder."

Good info.

For those unhappy, stop, think about this. JG is a very late second round pick who played 2 meaningful NFL games in his career. That's his entire meaningful playing stat, 2 games. Cleveland might be as dumb as a Jet but they aren't stupid beyond any possible description.
Sure, who knows, maybe we could get/got sh!t lucky and received a first round pick from some team that was desperate (unlikely and even more unlikely that we wouldn't have had to add in some swag to the deal). But 2 first round draft picks straight up for a late second round player with 2 NFL games experience?? Come on, really?

Given this pick from the niners could very well be at or next to the very beginning of the second round and, in theory, we get a good backup QB who knows the system? And it suggests GOAT is staying for another year (or two)? This ain't bad. And if can be spun into adding a semi decent playmaker in the front 7? Sweet...

For the moment, no. I'm betting Garrett Grayson is signed shortly. He was here for a workout a week or two ago, and since it's the bye we'll have 2 weeks to get him prepared for emergency spot duty.

Pretty sure Grayson was signed by Carolina last week..

He wanted to start. We weren't ready to concede the Brady window. We weren't willing to thread the needle enough for him to be complacent being a back up going on 5 -6 years in the league while we rode Brady out and tried to do a balancing act to keep both.

Not a big deal. We turned a 62 into a 33-34. Maybe at our best we could have got a 12 but we wanted to try to keep him.

OK. Thanks.

So originally Hoyer was a part of the trade. Pats had him removed from the deal so that they wouldn't lose the comp pick. Correct?

@AndyJohnson - This is the tweet I read.

I thought he was wrong about that, but I seem to remember comp calls following the player in a trade,ie hoyer was a free agent signed by sf, so he might count for us as a signing in the comp pick equation

Im late to the party obviously and very confused. Why not earlier? What else is happening? What if Brady goes down? Where is my wife? Who the hell are you people?

They have those containers with an individual plastic square that represents each day of the month. Just slip one dose of your medicine in each square and set a daily alarm on your smartphone. This will help you to avoid these episodes of missed medication brother Downey

Seriously, why not trade earlier? That's a good question. Best possible answer besides extension talks weren't working out and/or simple poker playing, why not keep Brady's backup/trade bait to as far into the season as possible in case he was needed?. Then as the deadline approaches and he wasn't needed, you can sometimes get lucky to hook a GM/HC whose jobs are in serious trouble. Two guys desperate to make a splash signing as red meat to angry fans to save their livelihoods. This sometimes can allow BB to swipe their wallets just a handful of weeks before they get run out of town on a rail in complete disgrace.
Damn, too bad that didn't quite happen here but there is always next time....

@deroc5050

Apologies if my responses to your questions (and the follow up) seemed harsh. That was not my intent, but re-reading them, I can see where they could be taken that way.

The next player I meet, in any sport, who is ecstatic to be playing on a truly ****ty team for any length of time, will be the first.

You mean Kaepernick, not Kapernick, right? This is important, because I don't want to post Kapernick and get you angry, but if it's Kaepernick, I need to get it correct, in order to avoid offending your feelings.

So...

Kaepernick or Kapernick? Which is verboten?

"Verboten"? Hey I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying that's a word nazis used.

Not as relevant as people are assuming because the Pats weren't actively shopping Garoppolo to begin with. They wanted to keep him and were trying to sign him to a new contract. What happened today was the last resort after it became apparent they couldn't work a deal.

Well sir allow me to prove you wrong:
Quote from Zeke Mowatt, 1990 Patriots, 1-15 record: "we didn't win a lot of games but I was ecstatic to be a member of that locker room".

Can somebody explain this a little more? Why would trading one player for another count against the comp pick formula?

Hoyer was a free agent when he sigbed with San Fran. That makes him part if the compensatory formula.. We learned this a couple years back when we acquired that Dlineman in a trade. Same Scenario.
