Patriots Player Departure Jimmy Garoppolo traded to SF for 2018 2nd round draft pick

Kind of liking the idea of adding another QB in what will surely be a QB heavy first couple of rounds.

Brady Heir Apparent #3 (or #4?) would be nice and is obviously needed. And this heir apparent may actually end up 'the guy'.

Brian Hoyer was originally part of the trade but the Pats asked him to be removed from the deal so that they don't lose a 3rd round comp pick (I don't know how that works). Brian Hoyer has been instead released from the 49ers and it is believed he will sign with the Patriots as a FA and SF will end up picking up some of his salary if I understand that correctly.

In short Brian Hoyer will most likely be the back up QB.

Regarding the 49ers paying Hoyer's contract. Hoyer is a vested veteran. Per the CBA, vested veterans on rosters as of Week 1 of the season automatically have their entire salary guaranteed. Meaning Hoyer gets paid the remainder of his salary from his 49ers contract regardless of if he's on the 49ers or sitting at home.

So, signing for the vet minimum with the Pats gives Hoyer an affitional $350k in salary.

Yea shortly after the trade I began checking him out, seems like a good fit for our offense, I'm gonna check some of the other QBs in next years draft as well tomorrow, do you think BB could fix Blake Bortles? I remember someone pitched the idea before, I would sign him to something low after this season I doubt Jags keep him

Depending on how the Jags finish the season Bortles is either done as a starter in the NFL or signed to a contract extension with the Jags. In the first scenario if he is let go by Jacksonville I wouldn't mind signing him to be a backup QB (or even stop-gap QB if Brady suddenly retires out of nowhere). As a long-term replacement? I doubt it. Bortles' main problems have been inconsistent mechanics and read progression. The first we could fix, the second is much more difficult.

Does the money Hoyer receives affect the comp pick for Bennett?

Read a tweet earlier in the thread that referred to the comp pick.

No. The money does not affect the comp pick because Hoyer was not part of The trade.

Funny that you felt the need to use "may". hahaha

The unmentioned "or" would be a hundred page thread about Brady vs QB X in three years.

Got that. My poorly worded question was referring to my previous post in which I stated that when Hoyer was a part of the trade...... etc

Starting to think Brady can play to 45. They literally chose Brady whos 15 years older. Thats crazy!

..If it was any other QB. Happily, Brady will likely retire a Patriot

Good info.

For those unhappy, stop, think about this. JG is a very late second round pick who played 2 meaningful NFL games in his career. That's his entire meaningful playing stat, 2 games. Cleveland might be as dumb as a Jet but they aren't stupid beyond any possible description.
Sure, who knows, maybe we could get/got sh!t lucky and received a first round pick from some team that was desperate (unlikely and even more unlikely that we wouldn't have had to add in some swag to the deal). But 2 first round draft picks straight up for a late second round player with 2 NFL games experience?? Come on, really?

Given this pick from the niners could very well be at or next to the very beginning of the second round and, in theory, we get a good backup QB who knows the system? And it suggests GOAT is staying for another year (or two)? This ain't bad. And if can be spun into adding a semi decent playmaker in the front 7? Sweet...

Totally agree with everything here. Why is it that people assume a quarterback is the next Tom Brady just because he's on the same team as Tom Brady? Greatness doesn't come by osmosis. Think of all our backups signed to other teams for a mint that everybody assumed would be Tom 2.0. Matt Cassell for the 2009 #34 draft pick and whom the Chiefs then signed to a $62.7 million contract; Brian Hoyer ripping off the Texans for 10+ million; Ryan Mallett, and the less said about him, the better; Jacoby for a former, very young first rounder. But--excluding Jacoby's less-than-average performance for the Colts since he's still such a young work-in-progress--they were all hot commodities at the time, all snatched up by other teams and all fizzled in short order. We'll just see if Jimmy breaks the streak.

Damn wishing he would take over once Brady hangs em up. No ill will towards JG, he deserves to be starting.

Breer claims NE was willing to pay JG starter money but JG didn't want to wait any longer (can't really blame him):

Know this—the Patriots tried.

They knew what they had with their sweetheart of a quarterback situation, with the greatest of all time as their starter and a 25-year-old star-in-waiting behind him, and they wanted to keep it going. They were willing to pay to make it happen. They were willing to wait on him to close the deal.

But late on Monday night, the Patriots finally gave up hope, because they couldn’t give Jimmy Garoppolo what he really wanted: playing time.

As I understand it, the Patriots put potential solutions in front of Garoppolo in the spring and summer to try to extend their window to pass him the torch that Tom Brady has carried for the last 17 seasons. It would have cost them a lot, but they were willing to carry two starting quarterback contracts on their books to do it. Garoppolo, however, made it clear he that want to be a starter, not just a guy paid like one.

Jimmy Garoppolo Trade: Insider Patriots-49ers Deal

Not as relevant as people are assuming because the Pats weren't actively shopping Garoppolo to begin with. They wanted to keep him and were trying to sign him to a new contract. What happened today was the last resort after it became apparent they couldn't work a deal.

They apparently didn't want to keep him too bad. The reports aren't that Bill offered him the moon to try to lure him to sign; everything is saying the team tried to get contract negotiations underway in the spring but then felt it would be "too difficult" to make a deal. If the team truly considered his talent comparable to Brady's, they'd have kept him, picked up talks in the offseason, done what they needed to do, but they certainly wouldn't have just shrugged their shoulders midseason and shipped him off.

That's a great walk down memory lane and a good reminder. I forgot about the #34 for Cassell. Cassell put in a whole season of meaningful games but still didn't strike this two first round picks Utopia (though I believe Cassell was a 6th round pick).

Arguably, based on his very small amount of meaningful snaps, to have had a cost effective backup for this long and then get what is likely to be a front of the line second round pick (and assumingly a good enough and familiar enough backup QB)? I like this trade more and more.

Jimmy Garoppolo Trade: Insider Patriots-49ers Deal

Adam Schefter had this to say: “Well, I think what we have here is a case where Jimmy Garoppolo was going to be a free agent after this season,” Schefter said in a “SportsCenter” appearance. “His contract was going to be up. And New England had made efforts to sign him — re-sign him. And I think the more they talked, the more they recognized that it was going to be too difficult to re-sign him. And so rather than have him walk away after the season ends, they decided to make the move now and to trade him for a second-round draft pick.”

@deroc5050

Apologies if my responses to your questions (and the follow up) seemed harsh. That was not my intent, but re-reading them, I can see where they could be taken that way.

Its ok man, I have been watching to many doomsday video's lately. I think we are all gonna die anyway. So no worries. lol I wish I was just kidding.

The team are Super Bowl Champions and 6-2. So carry on, Bill.

Just don't mind if I call you "Happy Hans".

Not sure how I feel about this. I truly felt Garoppolo might be the QB of the future. Trading him now (along with Brisett) all but guarantees that the Patriots dynasty will live and die with Tom Brady .... and most fans I think will be okay with that
