Patriots Player Departure Jimmy Garoppolo traded to SF for 2018 2nd round draft pick

A contingent 3rd rounder in 2019 no higher than pick 97 only if they didn't sign offsetting free agents. Versus pick 33-37 in 2018 with no strings attached, in exchange for 8 games+ postseason.

If they think Hoyer gives them no worse a shot at winning it all if Brady goes down than Jimmy does, then it seems like the calculus works.

If they think that of Hoyer ..... lol

Now, the patriots can sign Hoyer to a new contract, hopefully for 4 years. Any bonus would be spread over 4 years. The 2017 cap cost would be minimal.

After watching him a few times since he's left I do not want him as our long term backup. For eight games, I would be fine with that. Would rather see Kap. But given that the coach and owner are TrumpsKKKi fans, probably not going to happen

Those who hate the trade have gotten over their initial shock and started posting.

we always think there must something else in the works, but that never seems to be the case.

Bunch of possibilities ..... if hogan is done for the year, then there may not be enough here to win it with a healthy Brady so what’s the point of keeping insurance ..... go with what you have and start building for next year Too

I think with as much as the offense has been struggling WITH Brady, the idea that JG would somehow save it in the worst case scenario, plus the absolute lack of return after the season, plus the inability to sign JG to a team-favorable extension...equals a move that had to be made. To paraphrase/quote Manning’s old OC Tom Moore on why backups didn’t get snaps in Colts practice “If Peyton goes down we’re ****ed...why practice being ****ed?”

Agree should see Hoyer back shortly and that’s cool with me. Certainly makes the 2018 draft doubly interesting too. Happy to roll with TB...happy trails JG but last years 1.5 games and this board’s rampant speculation about him being a “guaranteed franchise QB” aside, the Pats go as TB goes, as it has been for nearly two decades.

JG only has 8 games left on his contract. I'm surprised NE got as much as they did for him.

Me, too. Although I will say, based on the reports, it kind of sounds like Bill was falling a little out of love with Jimmy.

"Per @AdamSchefter, Patriots, Garoppolo started contract extension talks in spring and team felt it would be too difficult to re-sign him." -Ryan Hannable

A team's unilateral decision of "Eh, too much trouble to re-sign" sounds a little odd.

This is basically the same thing we got for Matt Cassel except no Mike Vrabel involved.
But Cassel was getting paid on a franchise tag not in the last year of a rookie deal. Of course he earned that franchise tag by winning 11 games, ten as starter.

This is the NFL superplan,
trade away any sense of future QB twice, tick
take a 5th round rated saftey in the 2nd
sign Kap, to piss of the Patriots fans so they dont go to games.
Team crisis
finish 6-11

Aaaarrrgghhh!

Absolutely fuming, would rather let him go in off season for nothing

Of course it was hard - why should JG take a discount and not get to play.

Okay,I’m upset, but honestly at this point the way 49ers are going we might have the top 2nd round pick which is as good as a first round pick.

We could have definitely gotten more if we would have accepted Cleveland’s offer...

I want to have a piece of mind when it comes to backups. I’m in total disbelief, I thought JG had a future here like giving the keys like Favre did with Rodgers...

Now we better buckle up and get our o-line on point to protect Brady.

This shows Belichick's level of confidence.

His place in Football History (not to mention Canton) has been secured for some time.

He's willing to take a risk that would define the careers of lesser GM/HC's if Brady is injured, the Pats are left with a mediocre Hoyer at QB and the team misses a trip to the SB by a play or two.

Gotta love it.

Personally, I think he has another move he's going to make, but, even if he doesn't, "In BB I Trust."

It's been a great ride and I'm with him and Brady until the bitter end...and I am proud to say that I have never posted anything to the contrary in my 15,000 or so posts.

I am iffy with the deal but if it improves our d line tremendously then i am all for it. Hoyer likely will be the backup and he knows the system. Another defensive piece with valentine and brown coming back from injury and our d line will be much better. It could actually help our linebackers if we can add another big body to the d line.

Save for jokes, shut up about the politics crap. This is not the thread for that.

I think it's a decent return, although we hoped for more. It's a good pick. I don't think anything else is coming either.

Best guess, they didn't like what they were offered before the season, realized they had the bye at mid-season, and decided to deal now even before the season started while getting a half season out of the guy.

I'm happy for the pick, although feeling slightly disappointed tonight (it was grist for so many threads....)
