Or are we moving to a more zone look?

Depends where you line him up and who is covering in man.

This is a classic BB move.
Peppers is a versatile football player. And despite that we have good players in the traditional position he would be described to fit into, he will have a role.
I’m sure belichick’s view of that role will develop.
At the least you have a guy who in a nickel base that typically uses 3 safeties is part of a 4 man rotation where you can use any 3 together.
But he will also have specialized situational roles and be a big st contributor.

In Rodney Harrison last few years here, he virtually never covered anyone on 3rd down. He would blitz from many different spots, and while he rarely got to the QB he was a threat. Coming from 6 yards beyond the Los full bore and needing to (hopefully) get picked up by the RB made QBs hurry throws even when he got blocked. That was a role specifically designed for him. Peppers will have a unique role also.

They can easily move him to LB, right? Could provide some depth there…

This team needs a proven NT badly in order get the most out of these box safeties (Dugger, Phillips, Peppers) & hopefully lighter, smaller LBs. Travis Jones would help complete the D IMO.

I like Travis Jones, but really hope Jordan Davis is available.

This might make sense if we hadn't signed DMac for $9M/1yr and didn't have Dugger, Phillips & Bledsoe. Safety is not our problem, CB is! BB must not trust Dugger long term, or maybe wants to move him to cover tweener LB like Wagner.

I don't think it's unreasonable to give the man a chance and see how they use him. We'll see if he recovered from Injury and the team can find him a position or role.

My question was in regards to the rookie Dax.
I don’t trust Peppers to play man on a receiver but a Tight end or a back I feel good about.

Not a position we really "needed" someone but I really like the signing. He is a versatile guy and we all know how Bill has long lusted over the hybrid LB/safety player and Peppers checks that box plus ability on special teams. Honestly I think he can be insurance for a few different guys ranging anywhere from Mills and Jon Jones to McCourty and Phillips. He even should have a solid shot at being out punt returner now that Gunner is gone.

Anti Aircraft for sure. Some decent multiple spy options against scrambling qbs. Interesting.

Costs nothing, might be redemption story for a former 1st round pick, he played on two different dumpster fires in Cleveland and NY, can play on special teams and in the return game... and the Pat's base defense is generally three safeties.

Good low cost high upside signing.

My first thought was "why isn't Phillips starting?", then I saw where he's supposed to be starting. Yeah, I don't know about calling it a base defense when two of the linebackers are safeties.

Also, the draft hasn't even happened yet so how could this possibly be our lineup?
