Howe: Amendola Market Heating Up

I'm the one making assumptions?

Now he wants to be paid. Probably the last big money contract he’ll ever get.

You assume that you know what Amendola wants, and you claim that it's a "big money contract" without ever bothering to define how much money that might be in $$ - cap hit for 2018.

The Pats' current cap space is a real number. The projections of the extra cap space the Pats might be able open up with certain roster/contract moves with their own players (currently under contract for 2018) are realistic estimates based on real numbers and based on how the salary cap and contracts work.

If you really give a crap about whether or not the Pats will - or even can - re-sign Amendola for 2018, you need a realistic number to compare to the real numbers.

Otherwise, you're just blowing smoke.

I will be very disappointed if playoff Amendola goes somewhere else. One has to think that if our offer is in the ballpark, he’d want to stay. I seriously think that I’d go 2 years, as crazy as that sounds. Someone else almost surely will.

I think the Pat probably paid pretty close to "market value" for a 32-year-old #3 slot receiver in 2017.

I don’t necessarily disagree but Amendola has taken the cuts and still been everything you would want in a player for them. I don’t think you pay him 6 million year again but 2/10/8 guaranteed would be worthwhile for both sides. We don’t know how long it will take for Edelnan return to form, and there is a decent chance Gronk will be traded, Amendola is a go to receiver in the most critical situations, and that matters more than just numbers.

Taking the most extreme version of events, where Edelman isn’t Edelman, and Gronk is gone, having Cooks, Mitchell, and Amendola would still give them a solid core to build around.

I agree that we should go 2 years. A second year only benefits the team; it is basically a team option. Of course, Amendola's agent should negotiate a bonus to be paid before Year 2 starts.

Amendola is someone I wouldnt want the Patriots to lose. He's not flashy, but when you absolutely need a play he always delivers. From the SB 49 tying 4th Quarter catch, SB 51 2pt conversion and the Jacksonville game, he always comes through. Pay the man what he wants

I agree. Pay him to stay. This corps of receivers is epic. Amendola has made so many stunning catches in the most pressured circumstances I’ve ever seen as a football fan. Fourth and ten danny

I really hope Danny closes out his career here with Brady, but he's a guy I give a total pass to if he decides to secure his finances for post-football life.. he took consecutive paycuts and has been a team player since day 1. He also has some tremendously clutch plays in those 2 super bowl wins & playoffs

He's earned whatever he gets and the right to not take grief for it

I give him a pass as well. The profound situations warrant that alone

I agree for the most part, but that $6M that he took a a pay cut from wasn't real. The Pats actually owed him nothing expect the final payment on his previous roster bonus which was on their cap either way - whether he stayed or left. Amendola's choice was either stay another year for $1.25M new money guaranteed (which tuned into $1.58M) or leave (be released) with zero new money and hope that he'd get that much elsewhere.

At this stage of his career, for Amendola, everything is effectively a 1-year deal, regardless what it says on paper. The only number that really matters for his wallet is the money that's fully-guaranteed the moment he signs the contract. Anything else that he might earn (if he makes the roster) would be gravy.

Fair or not, it seems highly unlikely to me that any team will offer him $8M guaranteed.

What do you think is going on at the combine? It is a well known tampering show going on there. No one cares about it unless you are stupid enough to make it obvious.
It’s funny that the Lakers get the Patriots treatment in the NBA. People have made their tampering out to be the crime of the century. Jeff Teague signed with Minnesota at midnight and not a peep lmao.

Howe suggest 2 years at $3M-$5M a year. I would expect $3M guaranteed in Year 1, plays a bonus before Year 2, plus incentives in both years. The second year salary could anywhere between $2M and $5M, especially with a Year 2 $1M bonus.

Fair or not, it seems highly unlikely to me that any team will offer him $8M guaranteed.

He’s more valuable to NE than anyone else. I’d give him 8-2 in a heartbeat. Players who get absolute trust in the most important moments are almost impossible to find. 4 a season for Amendola is a good deal for both.

Great value signing, he's a guy with an amazing heart and the very definition of clutch. This is the sort of player who helps build the backbone of a winning season. So glad the Pats locked him down.

Haha, those idiots paid that much for an oft-injured, aging WR who disappears for stretches at a time. Good for you for cashing in one last time, I guess, Danny, but you gave up a chance to win for a few extra bucks and you'll regret it but not as much as the team that signed you once you end up contributing nothing.

Sorry, just staging this post so I can come back and edit it once he gets a new contract.

He himself said that he wants to play in NE but it’s a business...

Danny Amendola on 2018: 'I don't want to leave, but it's a business'

This is how I see it. Play with Brady or Jimmy G. Anywhere else will lead him back to his old stomping grounds call injured reserve. He had a good season and should be payed market value if anyone expects a similar performance this upcoming season.

Our deals with him up to this point have been fair as far as I am concerned. We didn't screw him over by reducing his salary etc. He had earned those "hometown discounts" by throwing up 200 yard seasons lol. My best guess is that he remains with us at a reasonable price.

You are wasting your time writing up a coherent argument to reply to someone who has clearly no clue about roster building and just throws around meaningless platitudes.

Everyone including Dola knows that he needs to be on a snap count because his body breaks easier than others so there wont be any big contract out there for him that does not include injury splits. What Amendola wants at this point of his career is not to max out a contract playing anywhere but a contract with enough guarantees that make him more or less a roster lock so he doesnt go through spring training and camp for nothing. Which is exactly what he got the last two years in NE and why he restructured his deals. He gave up imaginary money for security that he would actually be on the roster.

What all of this boils down to is that he will be back with us for 2-3M APY on a 2 year deal unless a team with a boatload of money (e.g. 49ers) that doesnt care about spending 4-5m APY on someone who due to injury risk should not play more than an average of 20 snaps per game comes to the table.

An illegal market for an unavailable player is heating up? Has anyone informed the NFL front office of this development? It seems that tampering charges may be in order.

There is also the lure of his relationship with Olivia Culpo, which may have already "sweetened the pot" somewhat..

This rumor was started by Brady6...quite obviously

Aha! THAT explains it.

I need to upgrade my security. I'm currently only protected against the Brady5.3 version.
