How good are these young CB’s?

I’m talking about Crossen, Jackson, Dawson and J Jones.

Keeping 7 CB’s (depending on what you consider JMac) feels rather unusual for us. I have to think though that it’s a good sign that there’s some high potential here with this group. Keeping both a 7th round pick and an UDFA feels especially unusual.

I think they were tired of losing promising CBs to waivers every year, like Kenny Moore last year. Other teams know the Pats are great at identifying overlooked CB talent in the late rounds and UDFA. Ryan Lewis was even claimed despite being CB8, behind Jackson and Crossen. I was pretty happy with their roster cuts as I don't think we lost anyone on waivers who was worth keeping around.

First of all, I'm considering JMac a safety now, with the ability to fill in at boundary CB. I expect him to play (when he does) mostly as an extra deep safety, rather than up close to the line. I think Harmon, then, returns to doing more up-man assignments, like he did his first couple seasons.

I think JJ proved himself capable of handling slot duties and even RCB very well last season, and then he appeared to pick up right where he left off when he finally began practicing this Camp. Until someone else steps up, JJ is the 3rd starting corner.

I think that Jackson might be very good with a little more development, and that could happen quickly.

Crossen needs some skill-training to go with his natural athleticism and instincts. I think he'll follow JJ's path and be an elite special teamer this season who becomes a "real CB" in 2019.

Dawson - I frankly have no clue.

Anyway, I see it as 4 safeties and 5 CB + a special-teamer. It doesn't seem like that big a "surplus" to me, partly due to Rowe's history of being unavailable due to injury. Bottom line ... I think that DB is well-covered for 2018 and 2019 now.

I think we usually keep around that many but some are on the practice squad, which is where one or two of those could end up when it all shakes out.

I did not see much of Dawson at camp, but what I saw of him in the sec for the past two years, makes me think he will be the best if the bunch,
Decent speed, high courage but needs tons of technique work.

Crossen has speed, but needs help on everything else. Needless to say, this needs to be a red shirt year for him. If he is playing, we are in a whole of hurt.

Jackson plays slow, but has some coverage skills. He needs some serious help with technique as well. I would not be too worried if he got snaps in a game.

I suspect Belichick relies more on the counsel of his personnel staff in later rounds and UDFA than he does in earlier rounds where he tends to take his own counsel or that of coaching cronies more than his own staff.

The most common mistake Belichick makes in personnel is thinking his coaching can elevate an unproductive player from a lower level of competition into a productive player at a higher level of competition. It’s one of the areas where his confidence becomes conceit, and it doesn’t serve him well.

Yeah that's what I'm saying. The pick certainly didn't work out because he couldn't stay on the field, but this isn't a Jordan Richards-type failure. Dowling could play, just couldn't stay healthy.
