Well then you're 0-2, because I am COMPLETELY sold on Garropolo. He just has DIFFERENT mechanics than Brady. Doesn't mean they are bad. Plenty of people say Brees has excellent mechanics. But I have stated numerous times he is starter-ready right now. And he will be successful. It's just that #12 is kinda blocking the path in NE.

I was at the Buffalo game at the end of 2014. He had happy feet and was seeing ghosts. His best play was the scramble. Thank goodness he doesn't now and seems to have great pocket presence (from the first two games this year).

Brissett seems far ahead of the rookie year Garropolo in terms of pocket presence and field vision. Neither models are within light years of Brady, of course.

I don't know how you can assess their respective grasp of "field vision" from rookie-year samplings, especially in Garopplo's very limited case. But in what he showed this year vs. Houston and Buffalo, Brissett hardly ever looked beyond his first option from snap -- which I'm sure is what the coaches wanted.

Food for thought on why Brissett was activated: Brady is back on the injury report with his knee. If the Pats lock up the No. 1 seed this week they might have plans to rest Tom vs. Miami.

Watching this kid in TC, in PS, in a couple of games where he was thrown in prematurely, and then simply his comportment on the sidelines and in the locker room I can see why Parcells has said Brissett is the real deal.

What jumped out at me also is his throwing motion. It's Brady! He throws leaning forward over the top like. Jim Palmer pitch. Jimmy G is more like a Drew Bree's slinger from a lower arm slot. I would imagine the Pats WRs see the ball coming at them more similarly when Jacoby is throwing than when Jimmy is.

If he continues a slow and steady apprenticeship I can easily be optomistic with Jacoby Brissett taking over in 3-4 years.

Brisett has an awfully slow and long throwing motion. JAGs is much, much faster. Like Brady and Marino. I doubt that BB wants to go into 2017 with only a 40-41 year old Brady and a raw Brissett for a Superbowl contender that the Pats will be. If Brissett had two years experience as he will in 2018, it is more probable. But BB really likes three (or more) years of grooming before he has to rely on him.

Within one to two years. Might sign a journeyman FA if there's no rookie worthy of a draft pick. Or even pick up a UDFA rookie to be the third backup.

I disagree.... Garoppolo may not have the best feel for the pocket in terms of awareness...but I don't see him any more prone to panic or flee from pressure than most QBs making their first starts in the NFL. If anything, he seems too willing to take risks and expose himself to harm (as we saw in Week 2)

Theory : if NE benches Brady in week 18, they go w Brissett over JG. Of course, IN that scenario, JG is to be traded in the offseason & isn't to be put in harms way unless it's to relieve Brady/go for the win in the playoffs.

I wasn't trying to misconstrue your post. Maybe I should've been clear: I don't agree with your assessment of Garroppolo's rookie year, or see him being any more limited than Brissett, in terms of field-of-vision, ability to break down a defense, or stand in the pocket.

I think people are overthinking this move. Primary reason imho is simply to protect the most important position on the team. Plus it gives Brissett valuable learning time.
I want the goat to play as long as possible. We are not apt to see his ilk again. Maybe ever. That being said,I'd be comfortable with JG if (god forbid) TB was hurt. I also like what I've seen from brissett.
But there's some posters here who drive me nuts on this subject. Listen, get this through your heads: there is NO CHANCE JG will be TBs successor. His contract runs out after next year. Even if BB wanted to extend him to take over for Tom in 3-5 years, do you really think JG is going to sign a deal to continue being a BACKUP for 3-4 MORE years? That also assumes BB would tie up a massive amt of cash at qb. This just ain't going to happen. therefore JGs trade value will NEVER be higher then it will be this off season, since he at least would have one more year getting paid (relative) peanuts.
Its just common sense- either brissett or someone in college or maybe even high school now will succeed TB.

OK, we simply had a misunderstanding based on your use of the present tense when describing Garropolo rookie year where I was using the past tense (as in his rookie year). I was making a point of comparing them rookie to rookie - - not rookie to 3rd year veteran.

The harm in week 2 you are referring to happened not in his rookie year, but in his 3rd year.

I was making a point of comparing them rookie to rookie - - not rookie to 3rd year veteran. I thought that was germane.

Right now Brissett isn't 1/4th the QB Garropolo is. But given his gutsy performances this year, I feel he showed just as much if not more than what Garropolo (or Brady, for that matter) showed in their rookie years.

Most likely true.

However I believe there are several scenarios in which JG would be TB12's successor. One, Brady has an epiphany and decides to go out on top and retires after winning the Lombardi Trophy in about two months, seems very unlikely. The others are not good, so we will not discuss.

Timing makes it seem very likely Brissett is going to be the lucky inheritor who must try to fill the GOAT's shoes.

Precisely. The Pats should capitalize on Garroppolo's value as much as possible.

Judging from their history, I'm sure the Pats will resume drafting QBs even if Brissett is a solid backup (See Chris Price's article).

Shmessy, I couldn't disagree more. I watched him closely in training camp, preseason and his limited game action and he's very inconsistent with where he releases the ball in addition to having a wind-up that needs to tighten considerably. I don't know how much of his problem with mechanics has to do with processing information in the heat of battle, but Brissett is very raw as a passer. He has a strong arm but lacks touch. He's pretty much a work in progress with key selling points being arm strength and coachability. I'm surprised to see him activated; maybe they have plans to give him reps in relief if the Jets and Miami games are blowouts.

Maybe the throwing motion is similar to Brady (I didn't notice that), but Brisette really struggled with screen passes and little dump-offs in training camp. His accuracy was all over the place in drills. Those types of throws are critical to the Pats offense and are Brady's bread and butter.

That being said, I still liked what we saw from him. He looked poised and strong in the pocket. He didn't seem to make any mental mistakes. He played hurt and won a lot of respect from his teammates. For a rookie he showed more than enough in his opportunities that he's a capable prospect.

If we get a 1st round pick for JG then we golden, this upcoming year Is weak on the QB class. I expect either the Texans or Browns or even Jacksonville grab JG for a 1st rounder or even a high 2nd round from the Browns.
Sure Brissett might not be ready to become a starter but he will be a solid backup and having another training camp behind Brady this offseason it's gonna make him even better!

I like JG he is a cool kid and very smart but I think BB will do what's best for the team and I'm sure whoever JG signs up with that he will get a big paycheck.

This upcoming year I see a lot of our resources will go towards signing more defense players and maybe a solid 3 down running back since LGB isn't getting any younger.

This years nfl draft is gonna be exciting since it's gonna be loaded with good defensive players.
