Moreno just got the top deal for a RB so far and he only got roughly $3MM/yr and we don't yet know how much of that was real and how much is fluff. MJD's deal details are yet unknown as well, but I doubt they are even at Moreno's level. So at best Blount is looking at a deal which would pay him $3MM/yr if he hits his incentives. That's what the market is saying right now, and as we all know, its only going to get weaker as time goes on.
I think the Pats offer to Blount was probably a $750,000 guarantee plus incentives to earn another million or so. There are probably other teams who would go over that because they see him as their "bell cow" RB, while with the Pats he'd be just part of a rather large committee. But I just don't see him getting much more than a $2MM/yr deal.
So here is his choices:
He can stay with the Pats for a SLIGHTLY below market deal and play with a committee, which saves his body and could add years to his career and play for a perennial winner in a great atmosphere, while he continues to repair his rep.
OR he can take top dollar, which isn't likely to be much more than what he'd get here. Be the "bell cow", but take a beating. The teams that would pay more for his services are more likely to be teams less likely to be winners.
BOTTOM LINE - Not a slam dunk either way. I see him as a luxury signing. If he doesn't return we'll be OK. Most NFL teams would love to have Ridley, Vareen, and Boldin as a RB trio If he does return, we'll be better than OK.
In the end I think it will come down to being less about the money and more about whether being the top dog in a RB group is more important than being with a winner
