No Matthew Judon Tuesday

Patriots veteran Matthew Judon was not out early for the start of Tuesday’s practice.  The veteran normally had made a habit of coming out ahead of practice and playing catch with the fans, and up to this point, despite his contract issues, he had been out there.

However, that wasn’t the case Tuesday.  NBC Sports Boston reporter Phil Perry reported on Tuesday that in addition to not being on the practice field, Judon was also not even at the facility.  That would lead you to believe the two sides are now at a significant stalemate, with the veteran not any closer to reaching an agreement.

Mike Giardi of Boston Sports Journal reports that things escalated on Monday “because the two sides remained far, far, far apart on any modifications to the deal.”

It’s obvious that whatever the bar was previously for Judon and his agent changed, with several reports indicating that the deal Christian Barmore signed altered the landscape.  The veteran went from saying just a few weeks ago “We ain’t that far apart, you feel me?” to where we are now, where the gap is suddenly significant enough that it’s reaching a boiling point.

Clearly, add in whatever happened yesterday, and things have changed.  Now, the only question is how things will end, which will now have everyone wondering if the two sides can find common ground or if they’re simply headed toward a split ahead of this upcoming season.

Another Tough Day For Maye

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye had another tough outing on Tuesday, with Maye getting a longer look toward the end of practice but failing to put together any momentum.

According to Mark Daniels of MassLive, Maye started out hitting 3-of-4 to open the 11-on-11 period, but followed that up completing 1-of-6 during what ended up being a rough stretch for the rookie.  One thing to note was that he was working with the second-team offense, but the operation as a whole was shaky and he wasn’t able to string together positive plays.

Meanwhile, Brissett was efficient with the offense, although he struggled at times during Tuesday’s practice.  Overall, he also completed 5-of-11 during 11-on-11s, but during an earlier point in practice, he had several nice throws, including a terrific throw to Kayshon Boutte, who made a nice grab against good coverage by Marcus Jones.

Brissett has been in command on offense, although there was one moment of frustration after an illegal substitution error saw Brissett get hot, which ultimately led to the offense, and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, running a lap.

With the team just one week away from its first preseason game next Thursday night in Carolina, it’s clear they still have plenty of work left to do.  The club won’t hold a public practice tomorrow, but they’ll be back again on Thursday.

Odds and Ends

Patriots offensive lineman David Andrews was absent for the second-straight day.  There was no press conference with head coach Jerod Mayo, so no information has come out as of yet to explain his absence over the last two days. … The top offensive line remained the same for the fourth-straight day, with Caedan Wallace at left tackle, Sidy Sow at left guard, Nick Leverett filling in for Andrews at center (Antonio Mafi also got snaps here), Mike Onwenu at right guard, and Chukwuma Okorafor at right tackle. … Jabrill Peppers was also missing from the session.  He suited up on Monday but appeared to tweak something in his leg and was spotted heading back to the locker room.  Obviously, whatever it was, kept him out of Tuesday’s practice, although he did show up later in practice and took in the session with his teammates, wearing a compression sleeve on his left leg. … Also missing were Jake Andrews, Sione TakitakiCole Strange, and Jaheim Bell at the start of practice but Bell later appeared on the field but without pads or a helmet.  Andrews, Takitaki, and Strange are currently on the active/PUP list. … Like Bell, Marte Mapu was absent at the start of practice but also later appeared on the field but without his pads or helmet. Mapu was spotted with Peppers seemingly taking mental reps with the defense for the remainder of the session…. Christian Barmore was also absent, which will likely be the case moving forward given his recent blood clot diagnosis. … Demario Douglas was in a red non-contact jersey on Tuesday.  He continues recovering from what appears to be a hand injury, with the club continuing to be cautious there.  He started out as a spectator, but later participated in team drills. … Patriots quarterbacks had a strong start to the session, with the group all hitting the targets in the net for the first time since camp started.  That resulted in a Joe Milton backflip to celebrate that accomplishment. … Rookie Javon Baker was spotted coming up lame on one play while trying to snag a ball against Isaiah Bolden.  According to Taylor Kyles, Baker jogged back gingerly following the play but remained on the field. … The entire offense had to take a lap following a pre-snap penalty that saw Jerod Mayo get hot at the offense, with Alex Van Pelt also spotted running with the group.  Things haven’t been crisp and there’s still work to do, but also, kudos to Van Pelt who does little things like this and continues building a strong relationship with this group on offense. Davon Godchaux was spotted speaking with Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who came out at one point to take in practice.  Godchaux remains without an extension, but has been out there participating to this point, albeit wearing shoulder pads and a helmet but no lowers. … JuJu Smith-Schuster was spotted walking off the field with a member of the Patriots’ training staff late in the session and later left the field.  He had an up-and-down day on Tuesday and continues to be a player battling for a roster spot this preseason.

Interesting if the pats can speed-dial Lawrence Guy given Baremore being out for an elongated time. As well, good to wrap up on getting Godshaux signed. The DT spot was already short on tackles with size with Godshaux, Baremore and Watts. Watts is only 307 lbs. If they don’t the vaunted top 5 D will be run on up the middle, which opens up easy throws. Cincy/Mixon will pound the ball a bit game 1. Gotta get this fixed. As for Judon at Edge, I’m assuming the pats are OK to pay the man, but given he’s coming off injury,… Read more »

Phil Perry on NBC Boston wrote a good article on the challenge Drake Maye is facing in going from the NC Tarheels to the AVP/Pats offense. Specifically where the timing/precision and requirements for foot and eye placement are very specific for the given play in the AVP offense, and that is foreign to Maye. So not only is he having to learn the play and receiver routes and read the D, he has to master his step placement and eye movement etc. That compounds the learning curve and takes practice. Lots of practive. Some QBs come into offenses that are… Read more »
