A lot of great option out there: Landon Collins, Adrian Amos, Earl Thomas, Tyrann Mathieu, Adrian Phillips, Haha Clinton-Dix, Lamarcus Joyner..

Could it be worth our while to invest in one of these safeties and move on from one of our older safeties? Our decision to be made on D-Mac is well documented, and I would rather keep him due to his familiarity here. What would the savings be if we moved on from Chung?

YES. Yes, it is SO worth it. Maybe not Collins, who will command big $$$, but let’s consider that :
    (1) BB often deploys three safeties
    (2) He is paying his third safety (Harmon) quite a bit for a #3
    (3) Harmon, after not being very active vs KC and LAR, comes in and makes a positive impact in the biggest game of the year
    (4) BB loves safeties (Malloy, Harrison...)

If one of those you mentionned is willing to join in the (no) fun (thx Lane), why not ?

Chung's cap hit is 3.6 million and 2/3rds of that is dead money. So if you cut him you'd save 1.2 million. I can't imagine why the Patriots would "move on" from Chung for such a trivial amount.

Collins, Amos, and Thomas are all going to get very large contracts. Mathieu has always been intriguing. I'm unsure why the Texans wouldn't want him back.

I don’t really get it...this is a position of huge strength. I can see finding a good low-cost bargain for depth, but safety is one position where a notable FA doesn’t make sense. D-Mac will almost certainly be playing in NE next year, possibly with a restructured (not necessarily a pay cut though) deal.

J Jones played great at FS in the super bowl. I think their will be a long term contract for him and will move there in 2020 when Dawkins is ready to take over CB3. Their is no Chung replacement on the roster...don't see a big FA signing there for 2019.

I’m thinking draft pick when it comes to safety, although I have no guess as to who or when.

Safety to me feels a lot more like a prime draft day fill. We have veterans already, who played to their level in 2018. It's also one of the more cerebral positions on our defense, so giving a rookie a year to learn from the big three would be huge. Get them ready for 2020/21 when both McCourty and Chung could potentially be gone.

Which one of these "Free Safeties" has the range to be a centerfielder? Just Earl Thomas?

Did he really? I wish I could obtain the all-22 from this Super Bowl.

He played a lot of safety, but I think it was more box/slot and less true centerfielder (although he did that for some snaps). It's one of the many reasons I hope he comes back for a few more years on a solid contract.

Mathieu is the only name on that list that intrigues me.
Ha ha if he comes cheap.

It’d be an initiative to get younger. Chung and Devin are both turning 32.

That’s also why I’d be reluctant to move on from Devin. I’m more interested in the SS “box” types.

Apparently isn’t great in cap value, but getting younger and replacing Chung with Amos could be a nice upgrade.

Jones was all over the place...CB, FS but also SS with Chung playing LB big nickle at times. And then when Chung broke his arm.

Yep, safety is only a need down the line, draft one mid to late rounds, or go UDFA.

Obi Melifonwu - Player Profile Advanced Football Stats & Metrics

Keep in mind that Obi Melifonwu lost his rookie season to:

    • Injured reserve twice
    • Playing CB - putting a 6’4” SS on Brandin Cooks. Brilliant coaching by Oakland
The following season he was signed in November by the Pats as the developmental SS. He was assigned to Kyle Rudolph vs. Minnesota on a handful of downs & held his own.

I think he has a shot to be another Van Noy here learning behind Chung one more year. Considering McCourty, Harmon & Chung are all playing at reasonably high levels and Chung already has a developmental player behind him it probably makes sense to either wait or turn to the draft for a FS prospect.

The safety market may be deep in free agency, but has nothing of value.

This draft looks to have lots of value even on day 3, and that is where bb needs to look, but remember he really likes veterans in the secondary.

I agree, but if Tyrone Mathieu has his head screwed on tight and has resolved some of he demons and he came at the right price would take a look at him.. but that is a lot of "if's" about the "Honey Badger".. as I type this he might not be a good fit after all...

Some of the early mock drafts indicated that the Patriots were gonna pick a safety with #32, but what do they really know?? Jonathan Abrams, Miss. State??

Even his hometown Saints are wary about this guy.. sounds like a lot of baggage to me.

2019 free agency: Don't plan on Saints signing Tyrann Mathieu
